When you're walking along the beach on a hot summer day, you might expect to see a lot of sun worshippers and beach umbrellas lining the sand. And maybe a banner plane flying over the shore.

But instead of the normal sights and sounds associated with the Jersey Shore, college student Forrest Jennings saw something ominous as he was leaving the beach in Island Beach State Park last Tuesday afternoon — a dark funnel cloud swirling over Barnegat Bay.

"It began spinning at about 3:15 p.m.," Jennings recalled. "I was already on my way out for the day and was walking to get off the beach by the IBSP maintenance building, and I saw the funnel cloud drop down out of the rest of the clouds and then it started spinning."

Double waterspouts and fresh snow have surprised Taranaki residents today as polar-laced air sweeps up the country.

Hawera Aero Club pilot Chris Schone happened to come across the spouts while he was flying 3000 feet in the air, west of Manaia.

"I've never seen them before, other than on the news so that was interesting.

"I was a comfortable distance away from them so I wasn't too worried about that."

A waterspout hundreds of meters tall was captured on video as it rose over the sea of Hai Phong City's Cat Ba Island on Tuesday.

The waterspout showed up at around 7 a.m. and stayed for 3-4 minutes over the northern Vietnamese sea region in Xuan Dam Commune, Cat Hai District, before disappearing, said Nguyen Van Nghiep, chairman of the Xuan Dam People's Committee.

As the waterspout was located far from the shore of the port city, it did not cause any damage, he added.

Two years prior, a large waterspout also appeared near Hai Phong's Bach Dang Bridge before moving to nearby Quang Yen Town, also in Quang Ninh Province. In 2011, a waterspout showed up for 10 minutes in Thuy Nguyen District, killing two people.

Flash flooding wreaking havoc in northern Costa Rica

mmmmmm
Heavy rains and flooding brought havoc to the town of Aguas Zarcas in northern Costa Rica on Sunday afternoon. A flash flood in the Aguas Zarcas River affected homes, businesses and infrastructure after a landslide a week prior in nearby Juan Castro Blanco Park sent logs, mud and stones surging downriver.

The National Emergency Commission (CNE) issued an urgent warning for residents not to go near bridges or riverbanks to observe the flash floods and avalanches. They advised families living along the riverbanks to relocate temporarily to the homes of relatives or friends.

The CNE is working with the Municipal Emergency Committee to address the emergency situation. According to authorities, the debris and mud avalanche was caused by landslides in the surrounding mountains flowing into the engorged river.

Paul Michael and his wife Jane were enjoying a Saturday evening on their friend's cottage deck at Youghall Beach, in Bathurst, N.B., watching as a thunderstorm rolled in over the water.

"It was a pretty powerful looking thunderstorm heading our way — big dark clouds, lightning," he said. But he soon noticed something different on the water.

"Suddenly, I saw this commotion out in the water."

Michael said the commotion was approximately a quarter of a mile offshore and described it as water that "consolidated into two or three funnels swirling in a circle."
