Man killed by pack of dogs in Dale County, Alabama

mmmmm
What investigators initially thought was as a homicide in Dale County was soon revealed to be a fatal animal attack, according to authorities.

Dale County Sheriff Mason Bynum said the body of Demarcus "Sam" McKenzie II, 27, of Skipperville, was found in a residential driveway in the 5500 block of County Road 33 Saturday morning.

The sheriff initially said during the preliminary investigation, it appeared that McKenzie had sustained a gunshot wound to the head, however, further investigation revealed it was a dog attack.

Bynum said witness statements and physical evidence did not support the initial shooting assumptions. He confirmed McKenzie was not shot and his death is no longer a homicide investigation.

Emergency services clear debris after storm hits site in Mari El, along northern bank of Volga River
Eight people died and another 10 were hospitalised in Russia when trees fell at a campsite during a severe storm described as a hurricane.

"According to the latest information, eight people died in Mari El due to the hurricane that took place the day before," said Yevgeny Maslov, the mayor of the city of Yoshkar-Ola.

Comment: Reuters provides further details:
Ten people were killed in central Russia after strong winds toppled trees and heavy rains disrupted the electricity supply in hundreds of settlements, Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations said on Sunday.

Russia's Investigative Committee said it had opened a criminal case into the incident that killed three children.

Pictures posted by the ministry on the Telegram app showed cars and tents badly damaged and crushed by fallen trees.

Storms disrupted the power supply in 520 settlements, damaged the roofs of 41 residential buildings and seven buildings that provide social services in eight different Russian regions, officials said.
The BBC adds:
The storm affected eight regions, leaving nearly 100,000 people without power and damaging nearly 50 buildings.
They say that vacationers hadn't taken into account the weather forecast, but there were hundreds of people were camping there, could it be perhaps that they weren't expecting the storm to be as ferocious as it was? After all, it damaged buildings, and it is the summertime.

Could it instead be that, rather than this being merely the vacationers fault, that this storm was unusually intense? Which would also fit with a pattern seen across the northern hemisphere so far this summer season which has seen a spike in downbursts and deadly hail:

Power slowly returned to homes and businesses in Ottawa and Gatineau on Saturday, as the cleanup continued following Friday's severe thunderstorm that had tennis ball-sized hail and strong winds.

Trees and hydro infrastructure were damaged when the storm hit the national capital region between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday.

"The weather was intense; some hail, wind," Michael Walsh said while cleaning up his property in Carlingwood on Saturday. The storm downed a large maple tree onto his home, damaging the roof and deck.

"It was probably uprooted and then it fell."

As of 5:15 p.m., Hydro Ottawa reported 470 customers remained without power.

Severe storms on Saturday produced wind gusts of hurricane force around the District of Columbia, downing trees and leading to widespread power outages.

First responders were busy in the first hours after the storm responding to calls of trees on top of homes and cars and called the damage in some neighborhoods "significant."

Videos and photos from K Street in the heart of the district to neighborhoods in the sprawling suburbs of Maryland and Virginia showed nearly the same scenes - uprooted trees and snapped limbs nearly everywhere you turned.

The National Weather Service said wind gusts with storms that tore through the nation's capital were estimated to have topped 80 mph and were accompanied by torrential rainfall and frequent lightning.

Floods, landslide after severe thunderstorm in south Trinidad - up to 5 inches of rain in just 3 hours

nnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Severe thunderstorms caused flash and street floods in parts of south and central Trinidad yesterday evening, causing girdlock traffic and leaving some residents and commuters trapped in houses and cars.

The inclement weather included a funnel cloud that developed in the Gulf of Paria and was spotted from as far east as Princes Town. It touched down in the open fields of Woodland as a tornado. However, no damage was reported from it.

Within a three hour period, between 3.30 pm and 6.30 pm, four to five inches of rain fell in San Fernando, triggering significant flooding when the Cipero and Vistabella rivers burst their banks. The Cipero river burst its banks along Cross Crossing and Gulf View. It also burst in Green Acres, flooding several homes there.

In the humid and unstable air, in the presence of a low and frontal zone, favorable conditions for the initiation of scattered storms appeared over Poland. As we predicted, phenomena occurred in many regions.

A number of condensation funnels appeared in the areas of the storm cells, at least one of which was in contact with the ground. In this case we are talking about a whirlwind. A funnel of swirling air appeared in Samorządki in the commune of Górzno in the Garwolin poviat in Mazovia.

Boiling ocean update: Florida sea temperature 'record' drops 15°F in just 48 hours

ocean
Last week, the BBC reported that seawater along the tip of Florida had exceeded "hot tub" temperatures of 37.8°C (100°F) in recent days, "making it potentially the hottest ever measured". The Guardian was in fine alarmist form noting that the Florida recording posed a threat to human food supplies and the livelihoods of those working in the water. Similar hysteria was to be found across most of the mainstream media. Alas, curiously missing from all this excitable coverage was a note that just 48 hours later the temperature plummeted to around 85°F.

The reading was taken from a buoy in Manatee Bay which is managed by the Everglades National Park, and located north of Key Largo. The upper left graph below shows that the temperature moved between 90-101°F on consecutive days, then fell away rapidly to around 85°F.

Sea ice extent above average around Svalbard Norway despite high sea surface temperature in northern Atlantic

Polar bear habitat around Svalbard Norway above average despite high temps in N. Atlantic

Sea ice extent for Svalbard was above average yesterday and has been since 17 July, despite "record-breaking" sea surface temperatures in June.

Comment: Meanwhile down in Antarctica, which is in the middle of winter, record cold temperatures have been documented. The claim that 'sea ice extent continues to plummet' there is likely to be untrue (see Tony Heller's tweet).

Some researchers propose that the higher than average sea surface temperatures could be due to less cloud cover than usual, whereas higher than usual water temperatures overall may be, in some instances, due to increased activity of submarine volcanoes: 'Unheard of' marine heatwave off UK and Irish coasts poses serious threat
