Flash flood in Hanoi suburb buries cars under mud

mmmmm
There had been nonstop rain for several days in the hills in Minh Phu Commune in Soc Son, about 30 km from downtown Hanoi.

At around 10:40 a.m. Friday more heavy rains triggered the flash floods down the 400-meter Dong Chum hill.

In the kilometer-long road, there are four resorts, and guests' cars parked on its two sides bore the brunt of the landslide.

Binh, whose car was among those buried, said when the flash flood occurred he and several friends who had been inside a resort heard a rumbling noise and ran out only to see rocks and mud flowing over cars.

"We were helpless and could not do anything but watch," he said.

A woman was airlifted to hospital after a rare otter attack in a Montana river.

Two other women were also injured by the furry water creature, police have said.

The attack happened near the town of Cardwell on a remote stretch of the Jefferson River, a tributary of the Missouri River which is popular for fishing and recreational use.

At least one otter swam up to the group of women, who were floating on rubber rings, at around 8.15pm on Wednesday and attacked them, according to Morgan Jacobsen from Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks.

The trio were able to get to shore, where one of them called the emergency services, he said.

Iceland's newest volcano is now spawning tornadoes

As well as tornadoes, loud bangs sounding across the Reykjanes Peninsula indicate that pockets of methane within the lava are exploding.

Iceland's newborn volcano is announcing its arrival with a bang, spewing out methane explosions and tornadoes to complement the ribbons of lava painting the landscape.

Loud bangs echoed from the eruption site on the Reykjanes Peninsula, the Icelandic Met Office reported on July 27, indicating that pockets of methane gas trapped in the lava flow are exploding. As if that wasn't explosive enough, Earth's newest "baby volcano" triggered a whirling tornado, which can be seen rising into the sky in a YouTube video posted on July 24.

Comment: Or perhaps there is more to it than just temperature differentials. Remember, volcano eruptions can also produce lightning.

Dog kills owner in Tyrone Township, Michigan

dog attack
The body of a 68-year-old man discovered in Tyrone Township on Wednesday, Aug. 2, had been ravaged by his dog, which had recently been involved in an attack on another local resident.

Just before noon Wednesday, deputies with Animal Control arrived at the residence on Faussett Road to serve the man a court notice regarding the dog, but instead found him dead in a cattle pasture. The dog was actively biting him when deputies arrived.

The dog, a mastiff mix breed, was killed on-site due to aggressive behavior toward the victim and deputies. Police attempted medical aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His injuries were consistent with a dog attack.

Crews battled "fire whirls" in California's Mojave National Preserve as a massive wildfire crossed into Nevada amid dangerously high temperatures and raging winds.

The York Fire was mapped at roughly 120 square miles (284 square kilometers) on Monday night, with no containment.

The blaze erupted Friday near the remote Caruthers Canyon area of the vast wildland preserve, crossed the state line into Nevada on Sunday and sent smoke further east into the Las Vegas Valley.

A smoky haze blotted out the sun midday on the Las Vegas Strip and obliterated views of mountains surrounding the city and suburbs. Because of low visibility, the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas reported departure delays of nearly two hours.

A fire whirl — sometimes called a fire tornado — is a "spinning column of fire" that forms when intense heat and turbulent winds combine, according to the National Park Service. The vortexes — which can be anywhere from a few feet tall to several hundred feet high, with varying rotational speeds — were spotted Sunday on the north end of the York Fire.

A huge sinkhole has opened on a street in the heart of the Gold Coast tourist strip, almost swallowing a car that found itself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The huge hole opened on Short Street at Southport, adjacent to the Australia Fair shopping centre and just off the Marine Parade esplanade.

The silver Peugeot coupe went nose first into the sinkhole which cracked open suddenly due to broken water pipes.

The car sank into the hole around 4am on Thursday, with major damage to the road and footpath.
