Mass fish deaths continue: Millions have been found dead all over the world in the past month

Image
Millions of fish are suddenly dying all over the planet. In fact, there have been dozens of mass fish death events reported in the past month alone. So why is this happening? Why are fish dying in unprecedented numbers all over the world? When more than six tons of fish died in Marina Del Ray over the weekend, it made headlines all over the United States. But the truth is that what just happened off the southern California coast is just the tip of the iceberg. In 2014, mass fish die-offs have pretty much become a daily event globally.

Individually, each event could perhaps be dismissed as an anomaly, but as you will see below when they are all put together into one list it truly is rather stunning. So is there a reason why so many fish are dying? Is there something that connects these mass fish death events? Has something about our environment changed? The following are just a few examples of the mass fish death reports that have been coming in day after day from all over the globe...

Flooding has hit thousands of homes in Kampung Pulo, East Jakarta

Thousands of houses in Kampung Pulo were inundated over the last two days after heavy rain fell in Bogor, West Java. Many residents have begun reconsidering the city administration’s offer of relocation to low-cost apartments as the area has flooded several times this month.
Flooding has hit thousands of homes in Kampung Pulo, East Jakarta, over the last two days after heavy rain fell in Bogor, West Java, increasing water levels in the Katulampa reservoir to rise and causing the Ciliwung River to burst its banks.

The floodwater, which reached up to 2 meters in some places, inundated almost all the houses in the area but no fatalities have been reported and nobody was evacuated; most residents stayed on the second floors of their homes, as is their habit during the height of the rainy season.

According to the head of neighborhood unit (RT) 4, Usep Tahrudin, the flooding hit Kampung Pulo on Thursday afternoon. The water receded after several hours, only to return at a higher level at dawn on Friday.

"At midnight we received information that more floodwater was coming. So, thankfully, we were able to anticipate and make preparations," Usep told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

Is there deflation and inflation of a large magma body beneath Uturuncu volcano, Bolivia?

The voluminous ash-flow eruptive products in the Central Andes imply that there are major magma bodies; however, how these magma bodies develop and change in time and space are not understood. In this study, we analyse the deformation activity of the Uturuncu Volcano, SW Bolivia, from 2003 to 2009 using a satellite radar interferometry (InSAR) data set.

We find that the strength and the pattern of the present deformation can be explained by a pressurized source, such as an inflating flat-topped magma body at ∼22 ± 9 km depth below the surface. Furthermore, we examine the optical remote sensing data to perform a lineament analysis, which shows in a geographic information system (GIS) that a girdle of river streams and faults encircle the volcano at radial distance of approximately 15 km.

Fish falling out of the skies?

Image
Fishy tale: The story of fish falling out of the skies above Sri Lanka seems indisputable. Videos taken in the district of Chilaw show people collecting the little fish in buckets.
In Qatar more rain seems to fall from my air conditioning units than from the sky. Sometimes the units spit ice, and once or twice as a special treat, they've thrown a cockroach at me. In parts of the world which are wetter than Qatar, it seems that nature is just as fickle; at the beginning of the month it wasn't cockroaches, but small fish which rained down on western Sri Lanka.

Tales of creatures raining from the skies have been told throughout history. The Roman natural philosopher, Pliny the Elder, wrote about storms of fish and frogs in the first century AD. For years many people assumed that these stories were myths, or at least exaggerations, but nowadays there is no doubting the truth surrounding these tales. There are simply too many stories and too much evidence supporting them.

Certainly the story of fish falling out of the skies above Sri Lanka seems indisputable. Video taken on May 5 in the district of Chilaw shows people collecting the little fish in buckets. The video also proves that some of the little creatures were alive when they came out of the sky, as when water was added to the buckets, the fish swam around, gasping for breath.

The strange thing is that no one has ever seen creatures getting sucked up into the air, they've only ever been seen falling from the sky. How they get into the sky is therefore assumed rather than proved. It's believed that a tornado must move across a coastal region or a river, and suck the sealife out of the water. The strong winds in the upper atmosphere can then carry the creatures vast distances before they eventually fall back to earth.

16 square-mile Arizona wildfire 'growing significantly'

Firefighters say a wildfire burning through forested hillsides in a scenic northern Arizona canyon could dramatically expand as crews scramble to get the upper hand in less rugged terrain. Wildland fire teams are going to allow the flames to burn through flatter lands and into a sort of catcher's mitt to the north and the west, Deputy Incident Commander Pruett Small said Friday. That means the fire could grow to nearly 36 square miles, nearly tripling in size.

The goals for fire managers are to protect the 300 structures threatened in Oak Creek Canyon, keep the fire from pushing into the communities of Forest Highlands and Kachina Village to the east, and minimize the potential for flooding. Fire managers said the blaze has cost $2.2 million to fight as of Friday and might take up to 10 more days to fully control.

At least 1,000 people living near the Chaparrastique volcano have been evacuated as a precautionary measure after seismic activity increased at the volcano, Salvadoran civil protection authorities said Monday.

There was an explosion early Monday and the volcano then spewed reddish ash, officials said.

The Civil Protection Department said in a statement that an alert had been declared for the municipality of San Miguel, where the volcano is located. The city of San Miguel itself is 50 kilometres from the volcano. It is one of the largest cities in the Central American country.

The 2,129-metre volcano is about 145 kilometres east of San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador.

The volcano's last significant eruption was in 1976.

The likely nail in the coffin for the AGW crowd: NOAA forecasts above normal Arctic ice extent for summer 2014

This is interesting. NOAA is forecasting the months of August, September, and October of 2014 to have above normal Arctic Sea ice extent. As readers know, late September is typically the time of the Arctic Sea Ice minimum, and this year the NOAA forecast has it slightly above normal. Here is the NOAA forecast graph:
