El Salvadoran officials on alert for Chaparrastique Volcano activity

Image
The alert status remains today in El Salvador by seismic activity of the Chaparrastique volcano, except in the eastern department of San Miguel, where the volcano of 2130 meters above sea level is located. According to the latest special report from Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN), as vibrations persist and gases column is visible, the possibility of another eruption is not ruled out in the coming days or weeks through the central crater or their flanks.

Environment officials are urging people not to approach the volcano crater and abide by the instructions issued by the General Department of Civil Protection.

MARN explained that the vibration levels and emission have shown changes but remain.

Sea freezes so fast in Lovund, Norway that thousands of fish are killed instantly

Norwegian public radio (Google-translated) reports on the instant death of thousands of fish in a bay in the island of Lovund, Norway. An air temperature of -7.8 C (17.96 F) combined with a strong east wind froze the sea water instantly, trapping and killing the fish. You can see it in this fishapocalyptic image:

The dog owner says that he has never seen such a phenomenon. NRK claims that the herrings were chased by predators into the bay when the deadly freezing happened. Aril Slotte - the head of pelagic fish department at Norway's Institute of Marine Research - says it is not uncommon for herring to get very near the shore when chased by predators, sometimes getting trapped by the low tide in areas like this bay.

Whales wash up at Farewell Spit, New Zealand

Stranded Whales

Thirteen pilot whales have washed up on one of the world's greatest "whale traps".

The Department of Conservation (DOC) says the whales are stranded near the base of Farewell Spit at the top of the South Island.

It says the rest of the pod of about 50 whales is just offshore and there is a risk some of those whales may also become stranded.

DOC says it was alerted to the stranding this morning.

Marine mammal charity Project Jonah is in the process of contacting rescue volunteers in the area.

Volunteers will work to keep the whales alive until they can attempt to refloat them at the next high tide tonight.

Spaghetti-like formations found in Finnish lake

Unusual Formation

A boater has photographed spaghetti-like formations floating in a Finnish lake. And no one seems to know what they are.

Vesa Kaloinen lives on the shore of Suolijärvi Lake in southern Finland. He was working on the waterfront when he saw the floating white stuff on January 8. So he grabbed his mobile phone, jumped in a rowboat and set sail.

Making his way toward the floating strands, he snapped a few photos with his phone. But since he was still curious what the soggy white matter was, he dipped his hand into the water and grabbed a handful.

The white strings looked to be tens of meters long. His hand cut through a few, as he dug out what appeared to be slush. He crushed some together to make a snowball and threw it.

Toilet snake appearances are on the up according to a Brisbane snake catcher

Python in Toilet

A Brisbane snake catcher says he is not surprised a snake took over a suburban toilet this week as he has seen a significant increase in this behaviour.

Darren Jacobs of Queensland Wildlife Solutions said he has attended four jobs involving snakes in toilets in suburban Briusbane since shortly before Christmas.

He usually gets ten in an entire year.

"There's definitely been an increase and I believe its down to the stormy weather," he said.

"They are chasing rats and mice who are forced out of their hiding places due to the wet.

"The snakes go into the sewer after them and if they see a hole, they'll go up it, unfortunately some of those holes lead to people's toilets."

His comments follow the ordeal of a Carina couple who had a 1.5m carpet python take up residence in their bowl on Monday night.

Mr Jacobs said he removed a 9ft Carpet Python form a Tarragindi residence in similar circumstances last week.

German scientists show climate driven by natural cycles

Climate reveals periodic nature, thus no influence by CO2
We reported recently about our spectral analysis work of European temperatures [1] which shows that during the last centuries all climate changes were caused by periodic (i.e. natural) processes. Non-periodic processes like a warming through the monotonic increase of CO2 in the atmosphere could cause at most 0.1° to 0.2° warming for a doubling of the CO2 content, as it is expected for 2100.

Fig. 1 (Fig. 6 of [1] ) shows the measured temperatures (blue) and the temperatures reconstructed using the 6 strongest frequency components (red) of the Fourier spectrum, indicating that the temperature history is determined by periodic processes only.

One sees from Fig. 1 that two cycles of periods 200+ years and ~65 years dominate the climate changes, the 200+ year cycle causing the largest part of the temperature increase since 1870.

Fig. 1: Construction of temperatures using the 6 strongest Fourier components (red), European temperatures from instrumental measurements (blue). It is apparent that only a 200+ year cycle and a ~65 year cycle play a significant role.

Comment: No, CO2 has nothing to do with the extreme climatic changes that we are currently experiencing - and according to the above article, we might have seen nothing yet!

A sperm whale stranded on Anthony's beach near Stanley, Tasmania

Image
The male whale most likely died at sea before it washed ashore on Anthony's beach.
Tasmanian scientists are excited about the number of giant squid beaks found inside a huge sperm whale which beached in the state's north-west.

The 17-metre whale washed up on Anthony's Beach between Smithton and Stanley on Saturday.

Scientists from the Marine Conservation Program examined the carcass on Sunday and believe the mammal died of old age.

Spokesman says the whale's large teeth will be studied to determine its age.

"We think he will probably be between 70 to 80," he said.

The whale was in very good condition and its stomach contained many local species including a large number of giant squid beaks.

"Sperm whales are famous for battling with the giant squid and we've seen lots of evidence of those battles.

A fast-moving wildfire destroyed at least 27 homes in western Australia's Perth, officials said Monday, with one man dying as he prepared for the approaching inferno.

The blaze, thought to have been started by a fallen power line in the city's wooded outskirts on Sunday, was fanned by hot, strong gusts that saw 20-metre (66-foot) flames tear through residential streets.

"It has been confirmed that 27 homes have been lost at this stage, but this number is expected to increase as damage assessments continue throughout the day," Western Australia state's fire and emergency services department said.

The ambulance service said a man, aged 62, had died after collapsing on the roof of his house as he prepared for the oncoming blaze.

"St John('s Ambulance) responded to the incident but was unable to access the roof," it said.

"Despite assistance from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services in getting onto the roof, the man passed away at the scene."

Hundreds of residents fled their homes for evacuation centres and were anxiously awaiting news Monday. Some said they'd had only seconds to escape.
