Lowest solar activity in 200 years

Frank Bosse and Prof. Fritz Vahrenholt present their monthly solar activity report at their Die kalte Sonne site.

In May the sun was very quiet as sunspot number was a mere 18.8, which is only 36% of what is typical for the month this far into the cycle. Seven days saw no sunspot activity at all.

The following chart shows the current cycle, Solar Cycle 24 (red), compared to the mean of the previous cycles (blue) and the similarly behaving SC 5 (black).

It's clear that the current cycle is significantly weaker than the mean and far weaker than the cycles we saw throughout most of the warming 20th century. So far there have been a number of signs indicating that upcoming SC 25 will also be a weak one. Historically periods of weak solar activity are associated with cooler periods and altered weather patterns.

The current cycle SC 24 has been so quiet that it is in fact the weakest since SC 6, which took place close to 200 years ago.

A shark has attacked a swimmer off the coast of one of the most popular beaches in Ibiza.

The victim was treated for a two-inch gash to his hand after being bitten at Playa d'en Bossa - home to famous clubs like Ushaia and a Brit tourist favourite - yesterday afternoon.

Other swimmers fled the water following the attack, although the beach was not closed to swimmers.

First aiders spent about an hour searching the waters while the local authorities confirmed that a blue shark or a large fish was behind the attack.

The 82-year-old Spanish victim was discharged from Can Misses Hospital near Ibiza town around 7.30pm yesterday, about four hours after he had been admitted.

Four people were listed as missing today after an earthquake sparked a tsunami off Greenland and forced some residents to be evacuated. "Four people are missing," local broadcaster KNR quoted local police chief Bjorn Tegner Bay as telling a news conference in the autonomous Danish territory.

There were no confirmed fatalities, but Bay said 11 houses had been swept away after a magnitude 4 overnight quake off Uummannaq, a small island well above the Arctic Circle.

"The huge waves risk breaking over Upernavik and its environs. The residents of Nuugaatsiaq are going to be evacuated," police said on Facebook, referring to nearby hamlets.

Unprecedented ice avalanches in Tibet & eerie blue plasma energy during thunderstorm in Ohio

Unprecedented Ice Avalanches in Tibet have experts baffled as to the cause as temperatures were average and the slope was not steep enough for gravity to continue the worlds largest measured ice avalanche. There must be another energy input for this to happen, then a month later a second ice avalanche with the same strange events occurred. Also blue plasma energy appeared during a hailstorm in Ohio, and as the grand solar minimum intensifies, these electric sky events will also become more common.

A 10-year-old girl is in very critical condition after being attacked by a dog on Detroit's east side, police said.

The incident happened around 1:15 p.m. Saturday in the 10700 block of Beaconsfield Street off Whittier Avenue.

Police said the girl was playing in a backyard when a dog exited the house and attacked her. The pit bull somehow managed to get out of a second-floor gated room and into the backyard, where the girl and her aunt were visiting.

"The occupants knew the dog was a vicious animal, so when strangers are around they secure the dog. But in this instance, the dog left the upstairs, came down, the gated door was ajar, the dog left and immediately began attacking this child," Chief James Craig said.

Dead whale found off the coast of Fujairah, United Arab Emirates

Dead whale
A 20-metre long whale weighing 30 tonnes was found dead three miles off the coast of Fujairah.

A top official at the Fujairah Municipality said they were notified about the whale by the Fujairah Port Authority. A specialised team from the municipality's environment department then managed to drag the giant whale to the shore using special tools. The official said: "We do not yet know what kind of whale it is, but we do know it belongs to the region and is an endangered species," he said.

The partially decomposed cadaver of the mammoth creature was spotted after a foul smell carried to the coastline. The municipality is working on disposing off the carcass in a safe way with help of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and the Fujairah Department of Public Works.

Experts are yet to find out the cause of death. "We don't know how or why it died. It is decomposed and it seems like it died several days ago," the official said.

Officials say a beached humpback whale was found on the shore and declared dead at a state park in Rhode Island.

The Newport Daily News reports that the whale was discovered at Beavertail State Park in Jamestown on Friday.

Dale Wolbrink, a spokesman for the Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut, told the newspaper Saturday that rescuers arrived Friday afternoon and the whale was pronounced dead.

Wolbrink says the male whale is 9.7 meters in length.

He says the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will determine the best course of action to deal with the whale. The animal will stay in the place where it was discovered.

Bezymianny volcano erupts in Russia with ash cloud 7 miles above sea level

volcano
Propels ash more than 7 miles above sea level.

A major explosive eruption took place at Russia's Bezymianny volcano this morning (16 June 2017), propelling ash to 12.2 km (40 000 feet) above sea level, according to the Tokyo VAAC. It is the strongest eruption of this volcano since September 2012.

Bezymianny, now considered one the most active volcanoes in the world, erupted for the first time in recorded history in 1955. Within six months, it produced a total volume of eruptive products over 3 cubic kilometers (0.72 cubic miles).

For comparison, the 1980 eruption of Mount St Helens produced 1.3 cubic kilometers (0.3 cubic miles) of ash.

Prior to its 1955 eruption, Bezymianny had been considered extinct.
