A state of emergency has been declared in New Zealand after heavy rain triggered flash flooding.

Some residents in Wellington, which has also been hit by landslides, have been urged to evacuate their homes.

"We encourage Wellingtonians to act quickly and not wait for official warnings if you think you need to evacuate," the city council said.

A number of streets in the city have been evacuated, and fire and rescue officials said they responded to 150 calls for help overnight.

Andrew Little, the city's mayor, said one area received a record 3in (77mm) of rain in less than an hour.

"Be very careful around floodwaters; the flooding has been strong enough to move cars, and many manhole covers have been lifted," he said in a video posted on social media.

A very rare shark that washed up on a beach in Co Sligo has been recovered by the National Museum of Ireland.

The Greenland shark, a species with a lifespan that can stretch over 500 years, was found on the shores of Finisklin last Saturday.

It is the first recorded stranding of the species on the Irish coast.

The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) described it as a "very rare and interesting stranding", saying that little is known about it in Ireland as it is generally native to deep waters around the Arctic and North Atlantic.

"The Greenland Shark is the longest living vertebrate in the world with a life span of several centuries; the oldest recorded specimen was over half a millennium in age.

"A large species, they typically reach lengths of four to six metres." it said.

Mother Nature across the Mid-Atlantic can only be described by the Katy Perry lyric, "You're hot, then you're cold," as a meteorologist warns that a "tropospheric polar vortex" will sweep across the Lower 48 this weekend into early next week, abruptly ending the summer-like conditions in Washington, D.C.

"A bulging lobe of the tropospheric 'polar vortex' will be tracking through the Lower 48, bringing a cold front and much cooler air to the Eastern U.S.," meteorologist Ryan Maue wrote on X.

He added, "We'll wave goodbye to the nearly unprecedented mid-April heat wave."

A woman died from a medical emergency inside her Indiana home before the four-year-old girl she was babysitting was mauled and ultimately killed by six pit bulls.

When Gina Flores asked her aunt to watch her young daughter, she never would have thought it would be the last time she saw either of them alive.

On Monday, Oliva Mora Regalado, 53, reportedly died from a medical emergency stemming from a pre-existing condition, leaving Flores' daughter Evelynn Lopez alone with seven dogs - six pit bulls and one poodle mix.

Evelynn was then viciously attacked by the animals, according to a statement from the Huntingburg Police Department.

It is unclear what caused the animals to turn violent on the small girl.

Mt. Bachelor begins wrap-up of short season with fresh snowfall
As of Thursday morning, Mt. Bachelor ski area had received 17 inches of snow in 24 hours and a total of 48 inches over a two-day period. This mid-April storm brought 11 inches of snow overnight causing snow immersion suffocation and tree well risk at the ski area for what seems like the first time this season. It must've been quite the powder day, hopefully all who partook stayed safe.

The ski area announced last week that this would be its final weekend, culminating on its end of season celebration, RendezVan.

As for this weekend, the weather looks like it will clear up on the mountain. The mid-mountain forecast on Snow-forecast.com predicts that to be the last of the snow this season. Temperatures could reach into the mid-40s Saturday and Sunday. Winds are expected to die down and the sun could break through the clouds.

The ski area has seen a total of 206 inches of snow this season, according to its mountain report. Its snow base was up to 43 inches Thursday.
