A heavy snow hit Jingtai County in northwest China's Gansu Province on Sunday and Monday, disrupting life and causing losses to farmers.

The temperature plummet by up to 10 degrees Celsius as accumulated snow reached 25 centimeters. The snow left broken tree branches on roads and disrupted the traffic. "The sudden snow brought us much inconvenience. It covered many vehicles and makes it inconvenient for us to go out," said Zhang Yuanfang, a local resident.

The snow also left ice on several provincial highway sections as the fast-falling temperature brought dense fog that reduced visibility to less than 50 meters. It also caused huge economic losses to local farmers. One farm suffered loss of over one million yuan after more than 200 sheep were buried under the shed amid the snow.

The carcass of a whale was spotted near Alandhalai coast at Jeeva Nagar, a coastal hamlet near Tiruchendur, on Saturday.

Sources from the CSG said the carcass was found floating in a decomposed state in sea. It should have been dead some four or five days ago. However, the reason behind its death is not known.

A. Soosai, a fisherman and president, Fishermen Cooperative Society, Veerapandiapattinam, said initially some fishermen, who ventured into sea on Friday night, spotted the carcass in sea, while returning to the shore. But, still late in the evening, the carcass had not been washed ashore.

He said there was no possibility of the boat hitting the whale to death since the fishermen had been engaged in their routine at sea by small fibre boats.

The carcass was likely to be washed ashore in a day or two, said some sources.

From high above the action, the shark is seen at the rear of the boat, perilously close to its two engines.

A snowstorm dumped over seven inches of snow on the Idaho Fall area Saturday morning and temporarily shut down Interstate 15 in Pocatello.

Idaho State Police reported around 9:40 a.m. that multiple wrecks on Interstate 15 between mile markers 67 and 69 in Pocatello were blocking the freeway. Motorists were advised to use alternate routes until the interstate reopened about 30 minutes later.

The snow could continue falling throughout East Idaho well into Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service reported.

Multiple snow-related wrecks occurred Saturday morning in East Idaho, with Interstate 15 and Interstate 86 experiencing the most crashes. It's believed some of the crashes resulted in injuries but additional details are not yet available. Motorists should use caution while driving and expect delays, especially on the interstates.

The large amount of snow that fell in the Idaho Falls area resulted in multiple power outages there.

New Zealand's top ski resort is coming to the end of its season this weekend, with over four times the snow base it closed with last year.

Mt Hutt has almost 3.5 metres of snow.

The Canterbury ski area has been voted the best in the country at the World Ski Awards for the past two years.

Manager James McKenzie said this time last year the snow was disappearing fast, and the field only just made it to closing day.

But it's a different story this year.

Over 2 feet of snow falls at Mount Hood, Oregon

With a white Mount Hood barely a distant winter memory - and even with a wildfire roaring north of the mountain just a few weeks ago - more than 2 feet of snow have fallen at Timberline Lodge since Wednesday.

The early-season dump prompted the Timberline Ski Area to open a lift Friday with plans to operate two Saturday and Sunday.

Conditions that allowed the preseason opening, however, are expected to vanish by Tuesday, the National Weather Service said. Timberline officials urged skiers and snowboarders to check the early-season conditions before heading to the mountain on Saturday and Sunday.

A low-pressure area that dropped from the south over Mount Hood combined with "a fair amount of moisture from the Pacific produced an early-season snow event," said meteorologist Jon Bonk of the weather service.

Baby Antarctic penguins die during 'catastrophic' breeding season

penguins
© BBC/ShutterstockIt is the second catastrophic season for the southern penguins in five years.
All but two Adelie penguin chicks have starved to death in their east Antarctic colony, in a breeding season described as "catastrophic" by experts.

It was caused by unusually high amounts of ice late in the season, meaning adults had to travel further for food.

It is the second bad season in five years after no chicks survived in 2015.

Conservation groups are calling for urgent action on a new marine protection area in the east Antarctic to protect the colony of about 36,000.

WWF says a ban on krill fishing in the area would eliminate their competition and help to secure the survival of Antarctic species, including the Adelie penguins.
