Incredibly rare triple rainbow photographed in Scottish Highlands

Meteorologists have been surprised by the sighting of a double rainbow with an "incredibly rare" third rainbow inside the main bow.

The weather phenomenon was photographed on Wednesday night at Loch Lochy near Clunes in the Highlands.

Unusually, the colours of the third rainbow are in the same order as the main one it was attached to.

BBC Weather presenter Simon King said: "This has scratched a few heads as this is something incredibly rare."

The meteorologist said the rainbow had the characteristics of both of what are known as a twinned rainbow and supernumerary rainbow.

Supernumerary bows are formed by small, similar-sized raindrops which then create ripple-like rainbows.

Lightning bolt kills 8, injures another 8 in Bihar, India

Eight people, including seven children, were killed in Bihar's Nawada district on Friday when they were struck by lightning, officials said.

All the victims belonging to the Mushahar community, poorest of the poor Dalits.

Eight other children were injured in the incident that took place at Dhanpur village under Kashichak police station in Nawada, district official Anu Kumar said.

According to a district police, the lightning struck when the children were playing under a banyan tree. All the injured have been admitted to a government hospital.

No immediate news on injuries or damage after 5.3-magnitude quake rattles southern Greece

A strong earthquake has struck near Athens, causing residents of the Greek capital to run into the streets.

The city's Institute of Geodynamics gave the earthquake a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 but the US Geological Survey gave it a preliminary magnitude of 5.3. The institute said the quake struck at 2.13pm local time, about 14 miles north of Athens.

The quake caused limited power cuts and communication problems around the capital; the fire brigade received calls about people trapped in lifts.

The strongest aftershock had a magnitude of 4.3, almost an hour after the initial quake hit at 14:13 (11:13 GMT). Seismologists warn there could be more.

The earthquake was felt particularly strongly in the centre of Athens, where people stood in the streets after evacuating from tall buildings.

Dozens of beached pilot whales were detected on Löngufjörur beach on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, West Iceland, yesterday, Morgunblaðið reports.

A helicopter pilot for Reykjavík helicopters and American tourists onboard the helicopter noticed the whales during a sightseeing flight yesterday. Judging from pictures they took, all the whales are dead. This part of the beach, Gamlaeyri, located on the easternmost part of the south side of the peninsula, is off the beaten path and inaccessible by car. There is little traffic in the area, limited to that of hikers and horse riders.

Comment: Interestingly around the same time 47 individuals of same species were found beached on St. Simon Island in Georgia.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has confirmed video of a waterspout tornado on Lake of the Woods Wednesday.

Just after 8 p.m. on Wednesday on Hare Island, Sean and his son witnessed a waterspout tornado. Video was sent to Global News and was confirmed by ECCC.

There were strong storms in the area at this time with reports of severe weather on land nearby with downed trees in areas like Fort Frances, Atiokan, and Gull Bay to name a few.

Severe weather has returned Thursday with large hail and heavy downpours possible in the region.

Flash floods caused by heavy rains in catchment areas of Nepal have ravaged a dozen districts of Bihar so far, claiming 78 lives and affecting 55 lakh people, the state's disaster management department said on Thursday.

Sitamarhi reported the highest number of 18 casualties, followed by Madhubani (14), Araria (12), Sheohar and Darbhanga (nine each), Purnea (seven), Kishanganj (four), Supaul (three) and East Champaran (two), it said in a release.

The number of deaths in Bihar rose by 11 since Wednesday.

After two weekends making do on man-made snow, the Rainbow Ski Area received more than 60 centimetres of the real stuff this week.

The St Arnaud ski field opened its Harry's Way run and the T-bar up to tower eight on Wednesday, and planned to extend the terrain up to tower 12 (the full T bar) with further snowfall.

The go-to ski field for Blenheim and Nelson residents opened on July 6 with the Pomeroy's Beginner area and the Callahan Intermediate slope, relying mainly on their man-made product.

Rainbow Ski Area manager James Lazor said the skifield now looked like a "totally different landscape".
