Storm of the Century: Harvey to exceed Katrina in damage to US economy

Various disaster modeling firms have chimed in on the impact Harvey will have on the American economy, and the news isn't good.

Weather firm AccuWeather has estimated that the storm will cause a jaw-dropping $160 billion in damages, an amount equal to 0.8 percent of the US economy. "Parts of Houston, the United States' fourth-largest city, will be uninhabitable for weeks and possibly months due to water damage, mold, disease-ridden water and all that will follow this 1,000-year flood," said AccuWeather President Joel Myers in a statement.

"AccuWeather cautions that the negative impact from the storms are far from over. There will be more flooding, damage, fatalities and injuries," he added. "We urge all citizens near the path of Hurricane Harvey to remain vigilant and be prepared to take immediate action if flood waters rise."

Comment: Dangers are still out there for Houston and surrounding areas...including the impact on the US economy and the toll on the physical and emotional wellbeing of its inhabitants. If we consider this weather anomaly as a parallel phenomenon to the current societal storm, it offers a gigantic message for Americans to pull together and set aside their petty and destructive differences and pay attention to what is good for the whole.

Shivering three-year-old girl found clinging to drowned mother likely saved by her mom's effort to carry her to safety from Harvey's floods

Collette Sulcer died after she was swept away by strong currents in Beaumont, Texas while carrying her three-year-old daughter Jordyn to safety.
A shivering 3-year-old girl found clinging to the body of her drowned mother in a rain-swollen canal in Southeast Texas was likely saved by her mom's effort to carry her child to safety from Harvey's floods, police said Wednesday.

Beaumont police identified the mother as Colette Sulcer, 41, and said her daughter was being treated for hypothermia but doing well. When rescuers found the mother and daughter, the girl was on her mother's back, holding on, said Police Officer Haley Morrow.

"I envision what I would do if that was me in that situation and that's what I would do: I would put my child on my back and try to swim to safety or whatever," Morrow said.

Twenty years after Princess Diana was tragically killed in a car crash in France, conspiracy theories endure. With questions around SAS involvement, a mysterious white car and a bright flash just before the accident, some believe her death was not accidental.

Diana's then-boyfriend Dodi Fayed and chauffeur Henri Paul were also killed in the car crash on August 31, 1997.

While British and French investigations concluded her death was caused by Paul's reckless driving and the paparazzi dangerously tailing her limousine, RT UK looks at whether any of the conspiracy theories are credible.

Several hundred activists have taken to the streets of a Paris suburb, protesting against new labor reforms which will make it easier for companies to hire and fire workers, and accusing President Emmanuel Macron of failing to represent the people.

The rally, organized by a group of trade unions, Solidaires and the CGT as well as associations like Attac France and Members of the Right to Housing (DAL), denounced the reforms of the labor code that is currently under government discussion.

Protesters arrived at the HEC School of Management in the Jouy-en-Josas suburb -where France's largest employer federation MEDEF are hosting their 'Summer University' - to speak out against the perceived influence of the French business lobby over their newly elected business friendly president.

"Mr. Macron represents the big bosses, and those who want to cut public services, social protection and everything achieved by workers," one of the protesters at the rally told RT.
