The group of Sakhalin fishermen did not expect to find the lovecraftian monster in their nets as they took to the sea for more convenient catch Saturday. The enormous fish, considered a delicacy in some cultures, proved to be a dead weight as it didn't make it to the shore fresh.

Russian fishermen pulled a 1,100 kg ocean sunfish which got stuck in their net in the waters near Iturup island, according to Sakhalin info. Also known as moonfish and mola, the bizarre-looking creature is the heaviest bony fish on Earth.

A Maryland woman was forced to deliver her baby nearly two months earlier than expected after her boyfriend allegedly doused her in flammable liquid and set her on fire, police said.

Police and firefighters were responding to a fire at 11:45 a.m. Friday when they found Andrea Grinage, of Prince George's County, with critical burns across her body, according to NBC Washington.

Grinage told police that her boyfriend poured flammable liquid on her and then set her ablaze - and that she was concerned he was heading to Washington, D.C. to possibly harm her family members.

Arthur Grinage, Andrea's father, said her boyfriend set her on fire because he was angry she was pregnant.

Two Pakistani teenage lovers who tried to elope were murdered with electric shocks by their own family in a brutal tribal "honour killing", police said.

The young couple, aged 15 and 17, in the port city of Karachi were said by the Pashtun council of elders, or jirga, to have brought dishonour on the community.

"The innocent souls were tied to a charpai (rope bed) and given electric shocks," said police officer Aman Marwat.

Marwat arrested the two fathers and two uncles and is pursuing some 30 members of the jirga who have gone into hiding.

The 15-year-old girl had allegedly run away with her 17-year-old boyfriend last month, Marwat said.

"The girl was killed and buried first followed by the murder of the boy the next day," he added.

Actress Leah Remini took home an Emmy for her A&E documentary series "Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath," publicly forgiving her mother for introducing her to what she described as a "cult."

Ms. Remini, a former Scientologist, gave an emotional speech Saturday night after winning for outstanding informational series at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

She thanked the "brave contributors who [worked on the series] despite ongoing risk and repercussions," People reported.

"I'm so happy to share this," she said. "It's not an easy job, but they were the ones putting their stories out there for everyone to hear."

Ms. Remini also gave a special thanks to her mother, who was sitting the audience and who also appeared on the show to detail her experience in the Church of Scientology.

"Mom, thank you. You are officially forgiven for getting us into a cult," Ms. Remini joked.

Invasive groping procedure: TSA's new 'enhanced' pat-downs

TSA enhanced pat-down
Earlier this year, the LA Times reported: "TSA quietly launches new 'enhanced' pat-down procedure." The Times noted that TSA would not describe precisely how the new procedure is different from the old one: "TSA officials declined to detail the new universal procedure or the previous pat-down tactics, but the industry is bracing for passenger unhappiness about more invasive searches."

For those curious about what the "enhanced" pat-down involves, I had a first-hand experience (no pun intended) Sunday evening September 10 in the Kansas City airport. (This is going exactly where you think it's going, so feel free to stop reading right now.)

After going through a metal detector in the TSA-Pre security line, I was randomly selected to see if a machine would detect explosives on my hands. My palms were swabbed and the machine detected explosives, even though I had not recently handled a gun, flammable liquids, or any sort of explosives. Another airline passenger told me the same machine had detected explosives on the hands of another passenger who had gone through the line minutes before I did.

Eight Hollywood, Florida residents die after nursing homes lose power after Irma

hollywood florida nursing home deaths
Eight residents at a Hollywood, Florida, nursing home left without power in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma have died, officials said Wednesday morning.

Four of the deaths happened at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, and three others died later at a nearby hospital, officials said Wednesday. An eighth person died at the facility Tuesday night and was taken to a funeral home.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott ordered the Agency of Health Care Administration to issue an emergency moratorium for the Hollywood facility. The moratorium prevents the nursing home from admitting any patients until it's lifted.

Late Wednesday afternoon, a second nursing home in North Miami Beach evacuated 84 patients. The evacuation happened after one of the generators failed at Krystal Bay Nursing & Rehabilitation Center along West Dixie Highway.

Five patients were taken to Aventura hospital as a precaution due to dehydration. The other patients were transported to 13 other facilities throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

At least 50 people have been killed and over 80 more injured in a pair of gun and car bomb attacks in the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah, Reuters reports, citing health officials. Iranian media said that among the victims were Iranian pilgrims.

In the first attack, a group of three or four gunmen entered a restaurant off the Dhi Qar highway and began shooting at random, hitting at least fifty people, several media reported.

Shortly afterward two suicide bombers, including one driving a car rigged with explosives, blew themselves and the car up at a security checkpoint nearby, Iraqi officials told AFP.

The survivors are being treated at the al-Batha and Nasiriyah hospitals, but due to the nature of some of the injuries the death toll is expected to rise, the director of the city's Health Directorate, Jasim al-Khalidi, told Reuters.

Americans are smoking more pot but not necessarily because of its legal availability

American adults are smoking more pot, but increased cannabis use does not appear to be due to wider availability of legal marijuana, a new study shows.

Pot consumption among women almost doubled between 1984 and 2015, from 5.5 percent of adults to 10.6 percent; meanwhile, 14.7 percent more men are toking up in 2015 compared to 8.8% since 2000, according to the report from the Public Health Institute.

But researchers cautioned against assuming that relaxed laws governing recreational and medicinal pot are driving the trend.

"Results ...did not show significant increases in use related to medicinal marijuana legislation," lead investigator William Kerr said in a statement. "It appears that the passage of these policies reflects changing attitudes toward marijuana use, rather than the other way around."
