Chicago cop arrested for unprovoked attack on innocent man

A Metra police officer's inability to contain his glee while watching the surveillance footage of him brutality attacking a non-violent man for allegedly trespassing at a train station has led to the officer being charged.

Then-Metra police officer David Robertson, 50, of Matteson, told Metra officials the 45-year-old man he arrested on charges of trespassing started the fight in 2015 at Millennium Station. However, the surveillance video from the station proved that claim to be a lie.

In the video, according to Cook County prosecutors, Robertson is seen striking the man in the face unprovoked, spraying pepper spray at him and smacking him with a baton as two other officers joined in.

A kitten was rescued by animal rights activists after being abused by its owner. The young woman from Moscow bit the cat's tail and repeatedly smashed the animal against a wall while streaming the torture online.

The woman, who goes under the name of Svetlana Daraselia on the Russian social network VK, claimed she was high on drugs and drunk as she was torturing her four-month-old cat, Thomas.

In the video, that sparked a wave of indignation and calls to prosecute her for animal abuse, Daraselia can be seen chewing on Thomas's tail, slapping him on the muzzle and throwing the kitten against the wall, repeatedly.

Without a hint of mercy for the helpless feline, she is seen shouting at him to shut up in response to the cat's heart-wrenching meows.

Website accused of facilitating child prostitution in the US continues to publish sex ads in Britain

Classifieds website BackPage, which stands accused of facilitating child prostitution in the US, is publishing explicit sex ads in Britain. RT found hundreds of listings touting young-looking girls alongside descriptions including "sweet young tight pink p****," "little English doll" and "pure innocence."

BackPage.com has faced numerous civil and criminal court cases in the US, and has been investigated by the Senate for its "knowing facilitation" of underage trafficking. Codewords such as "young," "teen," "Lolita," "fresh," "Amber Alert" and "new in town" - all believed to indicate children are for sale - were routinely deleted from ads by website administrators before being published in a bid to avoid the attention of law enforcement, the Senate investigation found.

Julian Assange announced that "thousands of Clinton emails" published by WikiLeaks were obtained via the Freedom of Information Act.

The emails of former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, published by the WikiLeaks whistleblowing platform in 2016, were not hacked but legally obtained from the US State Department, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said.

"The 'thousands of Clinton emails' WikiLeaks published were not hacked but obtained from the U.S. State Department via the Freedom of Information Act ion 3 March 2016," Assange wrote on Twitter.

In March 2016, WikiLeaks released an archive of more than 30,000 emails that have been sent to and from Clinton's private email server during her term as the US Secretary of State in 2009-2013.

Later in 2016, the website also published nearly 20,000 emails apparently hacked from the US Democratic National Committee, as well as emails hacked from the account of Clinton's campaign chairman John Podesta.

Several US intelligence agencies said they suspected Russia to be behind the leaks, but provided no evidence to support the claims. Moscow has called the claims of the election interference absurd and a distraction from actual election fraud.

Colonized Balkans: My journey through the ruins of Yugoslavia

Yugoslavia 1990s
Yugoslavia, 1990s
I travel frequently to the countries which once made up the now defunct Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, satisfying a passion of mine that stems back to my childhood days. For me, the Balkans' history, its people and its cultures are both enigmatic and magnetic, as they have been, too, for countless others, of many nationalities, over centuries gone by.

Accounting for the enchantment of the Balkans, its captivating allure, is a challenge to put into writing. Because no words can truly embellish what is one of the most absorbing parts of the world. To understand and feel what it is to be spellbound by the Balkans requires one to travel extensively across the region, taking in its astounding geographical landscapes and talking, intimately, with its unfathomable inhabitants, whilst indulging in reading about the history of the region - Rebecca West's classic Black Lamb and Grey Falcon constitutes, in my mind, the Bible of the Balkans, and is unlikely to be surpassed any time soon.

But the pull of the Balkans for individuals like me has also been a pull for empires, both past and present. The problems which have, over centuries, beset the people of the Balkans are overwhelmingly attributable to outsiders who have vied for domination of the region in order to satisfy their lustful self-interests.

Pennsylvania mother gets 2-5 years for brutally beating daughter who incorrectly recited Bible verses

Rhonda Shoffner
A Pennsylvania mother who made headlines after allegations arose she brutally beat her young daughter who incorrectly recited Bible verses will serve time in prison.

Rhonda Shoffner was sentenced last week to between 2 and five years in prison after pleading guilty to charges including aggravated assault of her daughter, who was younger than 13. She will reportedly also serve five years of probation after she's released from prison.

Cops say Shoffner, 41, was drunk when she ordered her daughter to get on her knees in the bathroom in her and recite verses.

Shoffner allegedly slammed her daughter's head into the wall each time she made a mistake. Shoffner choked her daughter, cutting off her airway and biting her forearm before digging her teeth into the girls left shoulder, police told PennLive.com.

All the while, the girl fought back and begged her mother to stop, she said. Finally, Shoffner said: Just leave and don't ever come back. The little girl grabbed a phone, coat and sneakers and fled. She called her father, who drove her to the police station.

Floodgates opened: Corporate America scrambles to deal with sexual harassment claims

Mark Halperin

The entertainment and media world was already an intensely paranoid place before the revelations about Harvey Weinstein, but as new sex harassment allegations emerge every day in multiple industries, a new level of anxiety is taking over.

In anticipation of the next headline, companies are huddling with legal and human resource departments, combing over existing nondisclosure agreements, asking for reviews of employee manuals and reminding staff how to comport themselves and how to complain. Among the suggestions: no after-dinner drinks and no one-on-one meetings in a room with a door closed.

On Thursday, ABC News president James Goldston issued a company memo reminding staff members how to report concerns. "We hold everyone at ABC News accountable for our behavior and how they conduct themselves," he wrote.

The memo came a few hours after Mark Halperin was suspended from his job as a political analyst for MSNBC and NBC News in the wake of a CNN report on harassment allegations from five women while Halperin was working for ABC News. (CNN has since reported several additional allegations against Halperin, and on Monday NBC News severed its ties with him.) Halperin's publisher, Penguin Press, dropped his latest untitled political book on Thursday, and HBO dropped a related book project. Showtime said it has suspended Halperin's docudrama series, "The Circus."

Comment: It will be interesting to see what, if any, long-term changes occur once the firestorm settles down. A culture of impunity where those in power have been given free-rein to impose their will on those they deem beneath them has been in place for a very long time, and it isn't going to change overnight. However, removing those psychopathic influences from power is a good place to start.

Man insists to police that mutilated body in bedroom closet is a blowup doll with human flesh

Jerome Ernest Wright
© Miami-Dade CorrectionsJerome Ernest Wright, 32, has not yet been charged with the murder of his girlfriend Deanna Clendinen. But he was charged with abusing a human body after police found Clendinen’s mutilated body in Wright’s bedroom last week.
When police found Deanna Clendinen's mutilated body on Friday, her boyfriend told them there was a misunderstanding: The body, he said, was that of a life-size, blow-up doll with human flesh. The cops didn't buy it.

Instead, after searching the man's home and finding a scene resembling the film Silence of the Lambs, they arrested Jerome Ernest Wright, 32, and charged him with abusing a dead human body. The woman's stomach had been lacerated and many of her internal organs removed, police said.

As of Monday, Jerome Wright had not been charged with the woman's murder. He not only denied killing her - he claimed the body wasn't even human. Still, police said, a murder charge is on the table.

Revelations Kevin Spacey groped child star and his dodgy connections raises questions about his children’s foundation
The accusation that Kevin Spacey attempted to sexually assault a child raises new questions about his foundation, which specifically targets children.

Actor Kevin Spacey became the latest alleged sexual predator in Hollywood on Monday after he was publicly accused of attempting to sexually assault a 14-year-old boy. Not only is this not the first time Spacey has faced such allegations, but it calls his past into question, which includes his foundation that specifically works with children.

The Kevin Spacey Foundation is an organization of "mentors, advocates and educators" who work with hopeful emerging artists to "discover, fund and co-produce transatlantic musical, dance, theater and film projects," according to its website, which features a photo of Spacey surrounded by eager children hoping to break into the entertainment industry.
