Government-run internet battle heats up at FCC

A Republican aide claims the federal agency can't overturn state restrictions.

If Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler wants to stop states from blocking city-run broadband, he'll likely have to override Republican opposition to do it.

In a speech Wednesday, a top Republican FCC aide argued that the agency lacks the authority to overturn state laws on the issue. More than 20 states, at the behest of cable and telecom industry lobbyists, have restricted the ability of cities to build their own broadband networks.

Matthew Berry, the chief of staff to Republican FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai, argued that cities and towns are just "appendages" of state governments. States are free to restrict local policy-making as they see fit, Berry argued.

He acknowledged that the federal government can preempt state laws, but only through a "clear statement" from Congress. Without that congressional authorization, the FCC can't take action, Berry said.

The Republican aide implied that Wheeler is only contemplating action on the issue as a way to tamp down liberal outrage over his proposal for weaker net-neutrality regulations.

EU countries circumvent sanctions by pretending their products are Serbian in order to sell to Russian market

Serbia is focusing on the fight against attempts to re-export banned food products to Russia, a representative of Serbia's Chamber of Commerce (CCI) told RIA Novosti.

Serbia is one of the few European countries not affected by an embargo on the import of food products which Russia introduced in response to Western sanctions. The list of banned items includes beef, pork, vegetables, fruits, poultry, cheese, nuts, dairy among others.

However, there is information that dozens of manufacturers from EU countries, including Poland, are trying to circumvent the ban by putting their products on the Russian market under the guise of being Serbian.

Monsanto refund demanded by Brazilian farmers for GMO crop failure

Image

Brazilian farmers are asking Monsanto and other producers of pest-resistant corn seeds to reimburse them for money spent on additional pesticides when the bugs killed the crops instead of dying themselves.

The so-called BT corn seeds are genetically modified to produce an insecticide that will kill the corn leafworm (also known as the southern grassworm). After the insect eats the corn, the toxin inside paralyzes the insect's digestive system, forming a hole in the gut wall. This forces the bug to stop eating within a few hours, and subsequently starve to death, according to a Colorado State University fact sheet. The GMO seeds are produced by four major manufacturers: Dow Agrosciences, DuPont, Monsanto and Sygenta AG.

In Brazil, however, the farmers say that the seeds did not deliver as promised.

Comment: By the sounds of it, Monsanto is starting to reap what it sows. There's no fooling Mother Nature with their man-made evil chemicals.

Psychopathic order out of chaos: The global elites plan for a "Middle Eastern Union"

Image
© AP
The Middle East has been engulfed in a state of chaos for decades now, with the region becoming increasingly unstable in recent years largely due to western sponsored proxy wars. The current map of the Middle East was created in 1916 through the surreptitious Sykes-Picot agreement, a deal which divided the Ottoman-ruled territories of Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine, into areas controlled by either Britain or France. Today the chaos we see in the Middle East is the creation of Anglo-American-Israeli power, which is attempting to redraw the map to meet their present strategic and imperial objectives.

Comment: It is difficult to determine whether or not the Anglo-American-Israeli power will be capable of fulfilling their reality creation project. The number one problem is that the sheer amount of chaos they've unleashed on the earth, the "creative chaos" that they think they can control, might bring the house down on all of our heads.

John McCain the conductor of the "Arab Spring" and the Caliph

Obama and McCain
© UnknownAre Barack Obama and John McCain political opponents as they claim, or are they working together on the imperialist strategy of their country?
Everyone has noticed the contradiction of those who recently characterized the Islamic Emirate as "freedom fighters" in Syria and who are indignant today faced with its abuses in Iraq. But if that speech is incoherent in itself, it makes perfect sense in the strategic plan: the same individuals were to be presented as allies yesterday and must be as enemies today, even if they are still on orders from Washington. Thierry Meyssan reveals below US policy through the particular case of Senator John McCain, conductor of the "Arab Spring" and longtime partner of Caliph Ibrahim.

John McCain is known as the leader of the Republicans and unhappy 2008 US presidential candidate. This is, we will see, only the real part of his biography, which serves as a cover to conduct covert actions on behalf of his government.

When I was in Libya during the "Western"attack, I was able to view a report of the foreign intelligence services. It stated that, on February 4, 2011 in Cairo, NATO organized a meeting to launch the "Arab Spring" in Libya and Syria. According to this document, the meeting was chaired by John McCain. The report detailed the list of Libyan participants, whose delegation was led by the No. 2 man of the government of the day, Mahmoud Jibril, who abruptly switched sides at the entrance of the meeting to become the opposition leader in exile. I remember that, among the French delegates present, the report quoted Bernard-Henry Lévy, although officially he had never exercised functions within the French government. Many other personalities attended the symposium, including a large delegation of Syrians living abroad.

16 trucks from Russian humanitarian aid convoy to arrive at Donetsk border checkpoint

The first 16 trucks of the Russian humanitarian convoy are to cross into Ukraine after all the necessary procedures are agreed upon with Kiev, a source familiar with the situation said.

"The International Committee of the Red Cross [ICRC] and Russia have done everything that was required of them to prepare the cargo for passage, including providing the Ukrainian side with all the necessary documents. Now it is all up to the Ukrainian representatives," the source said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry recently stated that Russia has done everything it could to ensure the security of the convoy's passage, which has been confirmed by ICRC president Peter Maurer.

The ICRC still has not received confirmation of safe passage for the convoy in Ukraine.

The first 16 trucks of the convoy that carries humanitarian aid to eastern Ukraine are said to be stationed at the Donetsk border checkpoint. The rest of the convoy remains near the Russian town of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky some 20 miles away.

Earlier in August, in light of the worsening humanitarian situation in Ukraine, Russia suggested sending an international humanitarian mission to eastern Ukraine under the auspices of the ICRC.

The convoy comprises 280 trucks carrying about 2,000 tons of humanitarian aid, including baby food, medication, grain, sugar, sleeping bags and other necessities. It set off from the Moscow Region on August 12 heading toward Ukraine's conflict areas.

Comment: You hear that? The Red Cross and Russia have done everything required of them -- NO weapons, NO troops, NO military aid. And yet Kiev and the U.S. had the audacity to smear and slander this humanitarian effort before it even got off the ground. Shameful behavior, while people in the Donbass are being butchered.

Putin not falling for the bait

The last thing Russian President Vladimir Putin would do is getting involved by the West into a military invasion of Eastern Ukraine, a senior fellow at the Foreign Police Center on the US and Europe told RIA Novosti.

"I don't think [Putin] would invade Ukraine. I think it's the last thing he would do," Clifford Gaddy asserted on Wednesday.

"Why? Because I think Putin thinks it's our trap, it's what we want to force him to do. And he is very sensitive to that," the expert elaborated.

Over the past week western officials and media reports have made constant, but unconfirmed allegations that the humanitarian aid convoy, sent by Russia into Eastern Ukraine, contained weapons. The head of NATO, Anders Fogh Rasmussen went as far as to claim the humanitarian convoy was a pretense for a military invasion.

Mother of missing journalist, Andrey Stenin, asks Red Cross for help in finding her son

The mother of Russian photojournalist, Andrey Stenin, missing in war-torn eastern Ukraine, has addressed the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to help find her son.

Vera Stenina told RT that she addressed the ICRC "because they are looking for missing relatives. And I had hopes that I will be helped there."

"They said that they'll try to look for him," the woman told RT, adding that the Red Cross showed "understanding" of her problem.

An experienced war photographer, Stenin, who works for the Rossiya Segodnya news agency (formerly RIA Novosti), disappeared on August 5 as he was covering the Ukrainian army's campaign against the anti-Kiev rebels in the country's southeastern Donetsk and Lugansk regions.

Despite over two weeks having passed since his disappearance, the journalist's whereabouts still remain unknown.

Last week, an adviser to the Ukrainian interior minister, Anton Gerashchenko, said that Stenin had been arrested by the Ukrainian Security Service for "aiding and glorifying terrorism," but he then backtracked on the statement.

Lip service: UN Security Council calls for immediate ceasefire in Gaza

Image

The UN Security Council expressed "grave concern" over the renewal of combat actions in the Gaza Strip and urged the warring sides to reach an immediate agreement on a lasting ceasefire, Reuters reported Thursday, quoting British UN Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant, president of the council for this month.

A five-day truce in Gaza between the Palestinian Hamas movement and Israel collapsed on August 19, some eight hours before the official deadline. Israel blamed Hamas militants for disputing the ceasefire and ordered the army to resume airstrikes against the Gaza Strip. According to media reports, about 50 rockets have been fired at the Israeli territory since the resumption of hostilities; at least 15 of them have been intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system.

Recently resumed military actions in Gaza have already led to at least 10 casualties among Palestinians, including the wife and daughter of a Hamas military leader.

Finally! The first 16 of 280 Russian aid trucks permitted to travel to customs checkpoint in war-ravaged Eastern Ukraine

Image
© © AP/ Pavel GolovkinOn August 12, 280 trucks carrying about 2,000 tons of humanitarian aid set off from the Moscow region heading towards conflict areas in Ukraine.
The first 16 trucks with Russian humanitarian aid to the population of violence-torn eastern Ukraine have started movement toward customs office at the Donetsk border crossing point, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported Wednesday.

Comment: Amid ridiculous rumors that the puppets in Kiev attacked the aid convoy, insufferable delays, and "suspicions" that the convoy was really delivering arms to the rebels in Eastern Ukraine, there is finally movement to allow the convoy to begin traveling to another checkpoint, albeit in small groups of 16 trucks. Let's see what else happens as the Russians attempt to bring first aid, food, and other supplies to those suffering under Kiev's assault of Eastern Ukrainians who want nothing to do with the new U.S.-supported fascist and neo-nazi junta.
