Russian Foreign Ministry blasts Western organizations for suppressing death of Red Cross worker in east Ukraine

red cross
© ReutersThe body of a victim killed by recent shelling lies near the Red Cross office in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, Oct. 2, 2014.
On October 2, a Swiss foreign national working for the Red Cross in Donetsk, Laurent DuPasquier, was killed by a shell fired by Kiev forces at the ICRC's headquarters in Donetsk, prompting outrage in Russia, but barely a whisper in the West. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded, saying:
Yet, although it has been five days, we have not heard any official explanations from Kiev concerning the circumstances of his death. The killing of a member of an influential international humanitarian organisation is being suppressed. We do not see any real action being taken to find and punish the culprits.
Noting that "several international organisations", including the EU, have ignored the fact that the ICRC office was located in self-defence territory, and "therefore shelled by the Ukrainian army", the ministry rightly questions the objectivity and nature of these organizations. The ministry concluded by saying "We insist on a thorough independent investigation of the tragedy."

The U.S. White House has issued a lame statement calling on "all parties" in Ukraine's conflict "to protect the civilians in their midst and hold accountable those who engage in the indiscriminate use of force." No mention of the fact that they only ones using indiscriminate force are Kiev's forces, who bomb residential areas daily.

Professor of Sociology: Nuland is particularly anxious to shift Kiev from diplomacy to warfare

US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland's visit to the Ukrainian capital Kiev indicates that Washington is worried that the Ukrainian government is hesitating to gain control over the country's East militarily, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Binghamton University in New York James Petras has told RIA Novosti.

"Nuland, who is considered by most experts in the United States a neo-conservative extremist, was the architect of the coup [in Ukraine]. Since the stalemate has taken place, Washington has increased its flow of advisors to western Ukraine and I think that Nuland is particularly anxious to shift Kiev from diplomacy to warfare", Petras said Monday.

He also noted that Nuland's main goal in Kiev is "to take [Ukrainian President] Mr. [Petro] Poroshenko to task for spending so much time talking and not as much time planning and strategizing for a new phase in the military dimensions of the conflict."

The expert went further by arguing that the militarization of foreign policy has become the principle strategy of Washington.

In addition, Professor Petras stated that the United States is offering Kiev very limited economic aid and is particularly interested in privatization of the Ukrainian economy.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland have discussed the implementation of the Minsk agreements, aimed at resolving the situation in southeastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian president's official website reported Monday.

White House exempts ISIS strikes from civilian casualty guidelines

  • White House says new rules to reduce civilian deaths from drone strikes don't apply to ISIS battle
  • Officials say U.S. is taking steps to prevent civilian casualties in Iraq and Syria
  • Obama has said that civilian deaths are a part of every war
  • New rules meant to temper the civilian death toll from unmanned U.S. drones won't apply in the fight against terrorists in Iraq and Syria, the White House says.

The standards, which Obama spelled out during a high profile address last year, were meant partly to allay concerns many Americans felt toward lethal drones. President Obama said at the time the drone strikes were used with far greater frequency than his predecessor in going after militants -- including in his fight against ISIS.

But while officials in Washington insist there are strict standards to prevent civilians from dying in Iraq and Syria, the rules Obama said last year would stem civilian deaths aren't being applied in the new war against ISIS.

"The specific standards at issue in the NDU speech apply only when we take direct action 'outside areas of active hostilities,' as was noted at the time," said Caitlin Hayden, the spokeswoman for Obama's National Security Council, referring to Obama's address at the National Defense University in the spring of 2013. "That description - outside areas of active hostilities - simply does not fit what we are seeing on the ground in Iraq and Syria right now."

In addition, the strikes in Syria and Iraq are being conducted by manned aircraft in addition to unmanned vehicles, although that distinction might not be apparent from the ground.

Smart move: Germany looks to Chinese markets as EU economy struggles

Premier Li Keqiang and Angela Merkel
© APA struggling euro zone economy has intensified the pressure on the German government to look towards Asian markets like China
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang will co-chair the "China-Germany Governmental Consultation" in Berlin with German Chancellor Angela Merkel during his visit to Germany that begins on Thursday. The meet is aimed at drawing a new blueprint for Sino-German cooperation in economy, technology and environment protection.

Official figures say bilateral trade accounts for one third of the total China-EU trade volume. The Chinese Premier said last year that the two countries, the world's top two exporters, could be an "economic dream team" and that Beijing was ready to open up new sectors of its economy to German investors.

From January to August this year, bilateral trade amounted to $117.3 billion, up 12 per cent year on year.

"The two countries are important markets for each other. We are making great efforts to transform our economic structure, change our development mode, and address environmental pollution. This will create a huge demand in the market of environment protection and energy saving. That's where Germany has advantages," said Chinese Ambassador to Germany Shi Mingde in an interview to Chinese state media ahead of Li's visit.

Ramping up the fear: If Ebola reaches Central America, 'there will be mass migration into the U.S', says General

Image
Those looking for good news on the fight against Ebola will not find much encouragement from Marine Corps Gen. John F. Kelly, the commander of the U.S. Southern Command. As Jim Garamone of Department of Defense News reports, Kelly told an audience at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday that, if the disease reaches Central America, "it's literally, 'Katie bar the door,' and there will be mass migration into the United States." He also said with certainty that "there is no way we can keep Ebola [contained] in West Africa.

By the end of the year, there's supposed to be 1.4 million people infected with Ebola and 62 percent of them dying, according to the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention]... So, much like West Africa, it will rage for a period of time," Kelly said. This is particularly possible scenario if the disease gets to Haiti or Central America, he said. If the disease gets to countries like Guatemala, Honduras or El Salvador, it will cause a panic and people will flee the region, the general said."If it breaks out, it's literally, 'Katie bar the door,' and there will be mass migration into the United States," Kelly said. "They will run away from Ebola, or if they suspect they are infected, they will try to get to the United States for treatment."

Best of the Web: "Non-Official Cover" - Respected German journalist blows whistle on how the CIA controls the media

"I was bribed by billionaires, I was bribed by the Americans to report...not exactly the truth."

Some readers will see this and immediately dismiss it as Russian propaganda since the interview appeared on RT. This would be a serious mistake.

Whether you want to admit it or not, CIA control of the media in the U.S. and abroad is not conspiracy theory, it is conspiracy fact.

Carl Bernstein, who is best known for his reporting on Watergate, penned a 25,000 word article in Rolling Stone after spending six months looking at the relationship of the CIA and the press during the Cold War years. Below is an excerpt, but you can read the entire thing here.

Best of the Web: American constitutional expert, and accredited international observer at Scottish independence referendum, doubtful about vote's official outcome

Image
The Emirates Arena in Glasgow
I'm not one that easily gives in to conspiracy theories, but there are too many questions regarding the validity of the 'no' vote for it to be accepted at face value.

While this article goes into the allegations with more forensic accuracy than I will, the integrity of the vote and the process is paramount to Scots accepting their status within the UK, especially in light of the implosion of the promises made before the vote, going back to war in Iraq, and announcing fracking in Scotland's central belt immediately after the vote.

There have been the YouTube videos which have been making the rounds, which may or may not show some form of vote tampering. There is also the issue of the thousands of ballots which did not have bar codes on the back as they were required to, therefore may have been automatically rejected, plastic bags found with 'yes' votes in them, and testimony of suspicious activity by volunteers.

While these allegations are disturbing in themselves, what could not be seen leaves plenty of scope for electoral tampering.

I was a monitor at the Glasgow count at the Emirates Arena, and can only speak for what I observed. The area over which the counting tables were spread was needlessly large. The same operation could have been conducted in 1/3 of the space and it would have been easier to see what was happening.

Fear mongering Congressman Hunter: 'ISIS is coming across the southern border'

California U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter made the alarming claim Tuesday that at least ten fighters for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) have been apprehended trying to enter the U.S. at the southern border.

"ISIS is coming across the southern border," Hunter told Fox News host Greta Van Susteren.

"You say that they're coming in the southern border which changes all the dynamics. Do you have any information or any evidence that they are actually coming in the southern border now?" asked the host.

"Yes," said Hunter.

More Nuland idiocy: U.S. could lift sanctions against Russia if Kiev stops violating ceasefire

Nuland
© Vadim Ghirda
US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland confirmed Tuesday that if the Minsk agreements are fully implemented, the United States could lift a number of sanctions against Russia.

Comment: Someone do Nuland a favor and loan her a functioning brain. This is practically an invitation for Kiev to violate the Minsk agreements. Of course, Nuland is fully aware of this.

Speaking at a meeting with the students of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev, Nuland said the United States could cancel some of the sanctions it had imposed against Russia if the Minsk agreements are fully implemented and if both sides of the Ukrainian conflict observe the ceasefire.

Comment: Russia supports the Minsk agreements; there wouldn't even be any Minsk agreements if it weren't for Russia. So Nuland is essentially saying that the U.S. will stop punishing Russia when Russia's enemy stops killing Russians in Novorussia. In what world does that make sense?

The conflict in Ukraine started in April, when Kiev authorities launched a military operation against independence supporters in the southeastern regions of the country.

Comment: Genius plan, Vicky! "Hey Russia, we'll stop screwing you over if you get our lackeys to stop killing your brothers and sisters in east Ukraine!" What a joke...

Longest in US history: Afghan War turns 13, US military deaths grow 4-fold under Obama

Image

Tuesday this week commemorates 13 years since the start of the Afghan War - America's longest running campaign of its kind - yet an end to the operation is hardly on the horizon.

Under the terms of the Bilateral Security Agreement, the pact signed last week by representatives for both the United States and Afghanistan, the US will significantly reduce the number of soldiers involved in its post-9/11 Operation Enduring Freedom at the end of this year. Troop numbers will shrink to 10,000, signaling indeed a major step towards ending the war in Afghanistan - a campaign promise made by US President Barack Obama during the lead-up to his re-election in 2012. With this week's anniversary, however, the costs incurred already appear more evident than ever, and the length of the operation may be endless.

Combined with the only recently concluded war in Iraq, the financial toll of the Afghan war on Uncle Sam's pocketbook could range in $4 trillion to $6 trillion, according to research published last year out of Harvard University. Additionally, the iCasualties website claims the US military has suffered 2,349 deaths during Operation Enduring Freedom - including 48 this year, or as many lives lost in that war in 2003 when it was still relatively new. Of that tally, Breitbart News recently reported, 1,649 deaths or about 75 percent, have occurred since the start Pres. Obama's first term in early 2009.
