Putin is right: Why the West should listen to Putin on Syria

putin general assembly speech

Putin is right. Everyone knows Putin is right, that the only way forward in Syria, if not to eternal slaughter, is via the established government of Bashar al-Assad and his Lebanese and Iranian allies.

That is the realpolitik. That is what pragmatism dictates. In the secure west, foreign policy has long been a branch of domestic politics, with added sermonising. "What to do", in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, even Ukraine, has been dictated not by what might work but what looks good. The megaphone is mightier than the brain.

The result of American and British grandstanding at the UN this week - seeing who can be ruder about Assad - is that Vladimir Putin has gathered ever more cards to his pack. Putin has already performed the two primary duties of a Russian leader, bringing stability and pride. He now faces turbulent Russian minorities across his European frontier and a serious menace from Muslim states to his south. He is perforce becoming a player on a wider stage. He has read Iran, India and Syria correctly. He is no fool.

Comment: When mainstream Western media starts treating Putin legitimately, it's clear that a shift has occurred on the political stage and that Putin and Russia have won the battle with the U.S. over public opinion.

Putin on Russian attacks on ISIS: Preemptive strikes is how you fight terrorism

Image

Russia will deliver preemptive strikes against terrorists, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, commenting on Russia's airstrike campaign against ISIS forces in Syria.

Despite its name, Islamic State has little to do with the religion of Islam, the Russian leader said. Radicals from many countries of the world, including Russia, have flocked to Iraq and Syria to join the terrorist group. They must be defeated there and not allowed to return to their home countries with battle experience and ideology adopted in the war zone, Putin believes.

He said Moscow is interested in other nations joining its counterterrorism effort in Syria. Those willing to do so can join the intelligence sharing center in Baghdad, which Russia, Syria, Iraq and Iran established in the run-up to the operation, the president said.

Covering their tracks: U.S. pulls spies from China after hack

The United States is pulling spies from China as a result of a cyberattack that compromised the personal data of 21.5 million government workers, a U.S. official said Tuesday.

The U.S. suspects that Chinese hackers were behind the breach at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, which exposed the fingerprints of 5.6 million government employees.

Because the stolen data includes records on State Department employees, the hackers could, by process of elimination, identify embassy personnel who are actually intelligence agents.

SOTT Focus: Russia establishes 'no fly' zone for NATO planes over Syria, moves to destroy "ISIS" - Pentagon freaks out

Check-mate. Putin outfoxes U.S. warmongers
You may, or may not, have noticed the growing body of evidence over the past year or two that strongly suggests that the U.S. government and its European "allies" are not really serious about destroying "ISIS".

The first hint came early last year when the jihadi mercenaries took large swathes of Iraq and Syria, and the West did nothing but wring its collective hands and fret, and resolve to bolster the fighting capability of the wonderful "rebels".

The second hint came this year when the U.S. and their partners began piecemeal airstrikes against "ISIS" that appeared to merely spur the head-choppers on to more success.

The third hint came with reports that weapons supplies being sent to "Syrian rebels" were 'accidentally' ending up in the hands of the head-choppers.

The most recent confirmation that Western politicians and military types effectively view "ISIS" as 'their guys' came in the last few weeks when the Pentagon reacted to news that Russia was in the process of establishing an air base in western Syria, from which to attack all foreign forces in Syria involved in the four-year-long attempted coup against the Syrian government.

US response as Russia conducts first airstrike in Syria

Putin
Russia has conducted its first airstrike against ISIS in Syria, a Russian Defense Ministry spokesman said Wednesday.

The airstrike targeted ISIS military equipment, communications centers, vehicles and ammunition, Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said, as part of pinpoint strikes against ISIS ground targets.

But a senior U.S. administration official told CNN's Elise Labott the Russian airstrike near the city of Homs "has no strategic purpose" in terms of combating ISIS, which "shows they are not there to go after ISIL." ISIL is another acronym for ISIS.

The official said the U.S. had no intention of preventing the strikes but that Russian planes didn't seem to be flying in areas where the U.S. was operating. "They are not stupid," the official said.

The State Department said U.S.-led coalition missions were continuing as normal despite an advance warning and request from Russia to stay out of Syrian airspace.

Comment: Note the US officials are concerned Putin may have placed defense capabilities that are more than what is needed to fight ISIS thus preventing US and other countries from having free rein over Syria.

The almost astonishing self-deceit of Barack Obama

President Obama, who has boasted of ordering military strikes on seven countries, chastised Russia and China for not abiding by the rules of international behavior, a breathtaking example of hypocrisy or self-deceit, writes Joe Lauria.

There was stunned silence in the General Assembly Hall on Monday as U.S. President Barack Obama warned leaders against falling back to pre-United Nations days, in which strong nations imposed their will by force against the weak. There was apparent disbelief as he said it was Russia and China that wanted a "return to the rules that applied for most of human history and that pre-date this institution."

These ancient rules included the "belief that power is a zero-sum game; that might makes right; that strong states must impose their will on weaker ones; that the rights of individuals don't matter; and that in a time of rapid change, order must be imposed by force."

Comment: Obama's wholesale deceit would be full-on astonishing if it weren't for the fact that he's psychopathic - or something dreadfully close. Telling lies - especially ones with such huge consequences - can only come so easily to such a person. That's the reason why such a man as he is was installed as President to begin with; the effortlessness with which he is able to get up in front of the world and tell Big Lies with a straight face. And then repeat them again and again and again, ad nauseam. This incredible capacity to lie in such a way has become the new true standard and definition of 'American exceptionalism'.

Russia transports five more fighter jets to Tartous, Syria; positioned for massive airstrikes

Informed sources said that the Russian Air Force reportedly transported five more fighter jets to the Syrian coastal city of Tartous in what looks to be the beginning stages of their massive aerial campaign against the ISIL terrorists group and its affiliates.

For the last two weeks, the Russian Air Force has conducted a number of reconnaissance flights above the provinces of Deir Ezzur, Hasaka, Raqqa, Aleppo, Sweida, Damascus, and Homs; this was an attempt by the Russians to gather a physical visual of the terrorist group's positions around Syria's vast desert landscape.

In addition to their reconnaissance flights, the Russian Air Force has relied on their satellite imagery to capture the terrorist group's movements along their main supply routes that stretch from the Northwestern Syrian province of Aleppo to the Iraqi province of Anbar; this has helped them pinpoint the ISIL locations inside Syria.

According to military sources in the Lattakia governorate, the Russian Air Force has positioned themselves to begin massive airstrikes in a number of Syrian provinces, including Deir Ezzur, Hasaka, Aleppo, Homs, and Raqqa.

Despite the US' agitation and criticism, Russia is going through with its planned aerial campaign, which will ultimately lead to a battle of "who is more effective" in the fight against the ISIL.

Afghan special forces arrive for a battle with the Taliban in Kunduz city, northern Afghanistan, September 29, 2015.
Special forces from the U.S.-led military coalition in Afghanistan battled insurgents on Wednesday near the northern city of Kunduz that was captured by the Taliban this week, a coalition spokesman and Afghan official said.

It was the first report of on-the-ground clashes between Taliban militants and foreign troops supporting their Afghan allies during three days of sometimes heavy fighting for control of the strategic city of 300,000.

Kunduz is the first provincial capital to fall to the Taliban since the hardline Islamist movement was toppled from power in 2001.

Russia's Aerospace Forces planes have started dealing pinpoint strikes against the positions of the Islamic State group in Syria, outlawed in Russia as terrorist, Major-General Igor Konashenkov has told the media.

"In accordance with a decision by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief Vladimir Putin Russian Aerospace Forces planes on Wednesday started an operation to deal pinpoint strikes against ground targets of the IS terrorist group in the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic," he said. "The Russian Defense Minister, General of the Army Sergey Shoigu has told his counterparts in the Collective Security Treaty Organization that in the course of the military operation in Syria Russian warplanes have been attacking military equipment, communication centers, motor vehicles, and munitions and fuel and lubricants depots of the Islamic State terrorists.

The upper house of Russia's parliament on Wednesday empowered the Russian president to use Russian military outside the national territory. As the chief of the presidential staff Sergey Ivanov explained, the air operation was to be launched against the Islamic State in Syria at the request of Syria's president Bashar Assad. Earlier, Vladimir Putin said that Russia would not be involved in operations on the ground.

Russia has informed NATO of Moscow's decision to conduct the operation in Syria, the Russian mission at the alliance said on Wednesday.

"The alliance's leadership was officially informed today about the decision," a mission spokesman said.

Authorities in the northern French city of Calais will send additional police forces to patrol refugee camps near the city on Wednesday, local media reported.

Police forces are being deployed upon a request by French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, the 20 minutes newspaper reported, citing local authorities.

The newspaper reported that police were expected to collaborate with the French Office of Immigration and Integration and NGOs supporting migrants.

Comment: This refugee crises will not end soon until the West stops supporting the destabilization efforts in the Middle East and Africa.
