'Extremists stoking rage': The German government seeks to downplay protesting workers' plight

Brandenburg Gate protest of farmers and truck drivers
January 15, 2024 in Berlin
Farmers, truckers, train drivers - numerous workers are making it known that they are fed up, as the chancellor's approval drops to 20%...

I spent a week with farmers protesting near the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. Too bad Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government didn't get down off its high horse and do the same. It was a missed opportunity to benefit from a much-needed mugging by reality.

Instead, the Interior Ministry contented itself by preemptively framing the protesters as susceptible to far-right infiltration. Scholz said that "rage is being stoked deliberately" by "extremists". When asked about this concept, the unanimous response among the farmers was laughter, eye rolling, or one-line jokes. If you want to put down a dog, just say it has rabies - or has been hanging out with the far-right.

Despite the protest taking place right across the street from the German parliament, farmers said the only officials whose presence was noticed, as they inquired about the protesters' concerns, were from the right-wing Alternative for Deutschland. Oh no, looks they're co-opting already! Or maybe they're just doing their jobs in trying to actually grasp the "ground truth" of the situation rather than framing it up with a convenient narrative in an effort to dismiss it.

When a government official finally graced the protest with his presence on January 15, at the apex of the week-long protest, it was Finance Minister Christian Lindner, who took to the stage and loudly proclaimed that the government basically had no money. "I can't promise you more state aid from the federal budget. But we can fight together for you to enjoy more freedom and respect for your work," he said.

Russian Strikes 'Dampen Enthusiasm' of Ukraine's Mercs Amid Massive Losses

Amid manpower losses resulting from Ukraine's botched counteroffensive, its military ranks have been bolstered by foreign mercenaries. But Russia continues to deliver precision strikes in the course of its special operation, including targeting training facilities set up by such guns for hire.

Russia's strikes on facilities housing foreign mercenaries in Ukraine will likely "dampen the enthusiasm" of guns for hire, retired US Air Force Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski told Sputnik.

Strikes like that Russia carried out on Kharkov "raise the risk level for these soldiers and others, who are in Ukraine largely for the money," noted the former analyst for the US Department of Defense. Russia is sending a powerful message to all foreign fighters and others ready to join the Kiev regime's forces for cash.

"Perhaps they will require more money, and if this is not forthcoming, it will no doubt dampen their enthusiasm," Kwiatkowski said.

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced a precision strike on January 16 targeting a temporary location of foreign militants in Kharkov, mainly French mercenaries. As a result of the strike, the building housing the mercenaries was completely destroyed. Over 60 militants were eliminated, and more than 20 were transported to medical facilities.

Comment: The French colonel makes the point of how NATO and Western propaganda lulled these mercenaries into fighting in a war, with them not knowing that they were just put into a meatgrinder. He also confirms that NATO is getting defeated, though we have been told by NATO that NATO is not involved in this war and that it is just a war between Ukraine and Russia.

United Against Nuclear Iran: The shadowy, intelligence-linked group driving the US towards war with Iran

united against nuclear iran
Most of the world has watched the Israeli assault on Gaza in horror. As tens of thousands have been killed and millions displaced, tens of millions of people around the world have poured onto the streets to demand an end to the violence. But a few select others have taken to the pages of our most influential media to demand an escalation of the violence and that the United States help Israel strike not just Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon but Iran as well.

"I might have once favored a cease-fire with Hamas, but not now," wrote Bush-era diplomat Dennis Ross in The New York Times, explaining that "if Hamas is perceived as winning, it will validate the group's ideology of rejection, give leverage and momentum to Iran and its collaborators and put [our] own governments on the defensive."

In the wake of Hamas' October 7 assault, arch-neoconservative official John Bolton was invited on CNN, where he claimed that what we witnessed was really an "Iranian attack on Israel using Hamas as a surrogate" and that the U.S. must immediately respond. When asked whether he had any evidence, given the implications of what he was saying, he shrugged and replied, "This is not a court of law."

Up to 5,000 members of the armed forces will be deployed to protect this year's World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, the Swiss Defense Ministry announced on Monday.

During his year's meeting, set for Jan. 15-19, the military will be deployed in the Landwasser Valley in the Davos region, said the ministry.

According to the ministry, members of the armed forces will also be deployed in the rest of Switzerland for the annual event, including air sovereignty, logistics and command support.

In September 2021, the Swiss parliament approved the costs for army deployment at the WEF Annual Meetings for 2022 through 2024, coming out to 2.55 million Swiss francs (around $2.99 million) each.

Over 60 foreign fighters in Ukrainian service, most of them French, have been eliminated in a precision strike on a building in Kharkov, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.

Kharkov is a major Ukrainian military stronghold in the east and has been the launching pad for rocket attacks on Russian territory, including the December 30 massacre in Belgorod that killed 25 and injured more than 100.

"On the evening of January 16, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation carried out a high-precision strike on the temporary assembly point of foreign fighters in the city of Kharkov, the majority of whom were French mercenaries," the ministry said.

"As a result of the strike, the building in which the mercenaries were stationed was completely destroyed. More than 60 militants were killed, [while] over 20 were taken to hospitals," the Russian military added.

The strike came on the same day that French President Emmanuel Macron announced Paris could not "allow Russia to win" and pledged to send 40 SCALP cruise missiles and "hundreds of bombs" to Kiev.

U.S. Interventionism in Latin America is to Blame for Ecuadorian Civil War

south america
Deteriorating social conditions, dollarization and lack of punishment for criminals have been key aspects of Ecuadorian politics since the U.S.-led regime change in the country.

In South America, a new scenario of hostilities is emerging. A civil war began in Ecuador, with the local government declaring martial law and a state of "internal armed conflict" in response to several terrorist attacks carried out by drug trafficking groups. At first, this seems like a simple domestic security issue, with no major geopolitical relevance. However, analyzing the case in depth, it is possible to see that the conflict situation is a direct result of U.S. interventionist actions in Latin America.

Ecuador has been going through an extremely turbulent political and economic period over the last seven years. In 2017, Lenin Moreno was elected president in the country as an ally of Rafael Correa. Combining elements of the socialist left with Catholic conservatism, Correa was the leader of the so-called "Citizen Revolution", having promoted important social reforms over ten years, making the country one of the most prosperous and safe in South America.

US scrambling to check China's 'charm offensive' in Davos - Politico

Washington is reportedly worried that Beijing's large and high-level delegation could undermine its diplomatic clout...

US diplomats are scrambling to hold on to their influence in Switzerland, as their Chinese counterparts attempt to woo the country's top officials during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Politico reported on Monday, citing sources.

The outlet said American officials were so alarmed by the size of the Chinese delegation at the event that they rushed to arrange a meeting between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Swiss President Viola Amherd to ensure Washington does not lose influence in the Alpine country, famed for its neutrality and status as a mediation powerhouse.

Politico cited an internal State Department memo dated January 12 as outlining US strategy in this regard. It reportedly warns that Beijing "will have 10 state ministers in attendance," with Scott Miller, the US ambassador in Bern, suggesting the delegation had all the hallmarks of a "pseudo state visit."

The document reportedly further underscores the importance China attaches to the trip, noting that the delegation was to be headed by Premier Li Qiang, described in the memo as the "No. 2" to Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Zelensky rejected favorable peace deal with Russia - ex-aide

Ukraine now faces 10 to 15 years of war, Aleksey Arestovich has said...

Ukraine had the chance to make peace at the 2022 Istanbul talks but something or someone changed President Vladimir Zelensky's mind, according to an interview with his former aide, Aleksey Arestovich, published on Monday.

Freddie Sayers, the editor in chief of the British outlet UnHerd, interviewed Arestovich almost a year after Ukraine's top spin doctor left Zelensky's service. He has since moved to the US, saying that Kiev wants him arrested on politically trumped-up charges.

Arestovich told Sayers:
"I was a member of the Istanbul process, and it was the most profitable agreement we could have done. The Ukrainian delegation 'opened the champagne bottle' when they came back to Kiev, believing the agreement was a done deal."
The protocols were "90% prepared" for a direct meeting between Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin when Ukrainian president called off the talks.

His rejection of a deal has been widely attributed to the 'Bucha massacre', which Ukraine accused Russia of, but Arestovich said he did not know that for a fact.

Washington resorting to 'verbal acrobatics' to mask Kiev's flops - Moscow

Anatoly Antonov

American political elites are on the same page in terms of seeking to hurt Russia, Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov has said. The people who are in charge in Washington simply cannot acknowledge that their attempts are not working, he argued in an interview with TASS published on Wednesday.

The senior diplomat was discussing the challenges of working in an environment of hostility that the two nations have not experienced in decades, as well as the embassy's plans for 2024. His analysis of US goals were at the core of his argument that - despite a temporary rift between Democrats and Republicans over aid for Ukraine on Capitol Hill - Washington's overall strategy will not change.

"The Russophobes have tried pretty much everything: multibillion dollar funding, direct arms supplies. They spent colossal amounts of money and got no results," Antonov said, referring to Washington's support of Kiev.

Since Ukraine has failed to beat Russia, the White House is now selling continued funding with a framing that might appeal domestically, the ambassador noted. This narrative claims that 90% of the funds skated for Kiev actually go into the US economy through defense contractors, describing the spending as a "good investment."
