Bombings in Thailand: Likely suspects? US-connected fifth columnists

Thailand bombings
UPDATE: Two more bombings took place on August 12, in Phuket and Surat Thani with more deaths and injuries reported.

Bombs rocked two tourist destinations in Thailand yesterday, in Trang and in the coastal city of Hua Hin. Several people are reportedly dead and many more are injured. The bombings have now been splashed across international headlines, likely at least temporary damaging Thailand's tourism sector, one of several likely objectives behind the attacks.

The most likely culprits are forces linked to ousted former-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, his political party Pheu Thai and his street front, the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD or "red shirts").

Shinawatra and his supporters suffered a significant defeat just days ago in a pivotal national referendum which saw the passing of a new charter that would all but end his party's prospects of returning to power.

Russia's Hmeymim base will not just benefit Syria but entire Middle East region

Russia is planning to turn the Hmeymim base in Syria into a fully operational base. In an interview with Sputnik, former chief editor of the Iranian news agency MehrNews, Hassan Hanizadeh commented on the issue.

According to the expert, Russia's initiative to create a full-fledged military base in the Syrian airport of Hmeymim is primarily viewed as an important step towards ensuring security and stabilization in the region.

"Middle Eastern countries (Syria itself, as well as Iran, Iraq, Lebanon) only welcome this Russian initiative, because Russia has never pursued the goal of military aggression and colonization of this region; the goal of the Russian military presence is to contribute to the stabilization and ensure security in Syria and the Middle East," the expert said.

The expert also argued that the military bases created by the United States in various parts of the world, by contrast, only bring destruction and undermine safety in many regions.

Comment: All the targets of US imperialism in the area recognize the value of a friend who can stand up to US bullying without setting the region on fire.

Fact check: Clueless CNN incorrectly 'fact checks' Trump's 'Obama founded ISIS' statement

CNN is continuing to conduct instantaneous onscreen fact checks during the US presidential campaign - well for one candidate, at least. The network called out Trump for saying Obama was the founder of Islamic State with the caption "he's not" in brackets.

Below the catching headline graphic, the station points out this is a fact check, while stating that al-Baghdadi was the founder of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

It wasn't long, however, until CNN's "fact check" was trumped by others who noted that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was actually the founder of the terrorist group, while Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is its leader.

Comment: In an ideal world, all politicians would be "fact checked" all the time. However, they'd first need to get their facts straight. CNN fails and exposes itself as a partisan propaganda outlet. And by the way, a proper fact check of Trump's comment would run something like this: "While technically Zarqawi founded ISIS, he couldn't have done so without the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq under President Bush, which continued under Obama, and the U.S.'s continuing policy of creating, funding and arming radical jihadi movements in the Middle East and elsewhere. If Obama had fixed the mistakes of the previous administration, rather than continuing them and actually making them worse, there would be no ISIS. So while he technically did not found ISIS, for all intents and purposes, he is responsible, along with countless others, Hillary Clinton included."

Netherlands probing death threats against Palestinian rights advocate

In the first reported case of the kind, Dutch prosecutors are investigating death threats to a Hague-based Palestinian rights advocate, implicating Israel as a likely culprit due to sophisticated tactics and hacking used. Israel dismisses its involvement.

Nada Kiswanson, a Jordanian-Swedish citizen who is a researcher at Palestinian rights group Al-Haq, has been bombarded with numerous intimidating messages for the last half year.

Kiswanson studied in the Netherlands and has been residing with her husband and daughter near The Hague. The threats are said to be targeted at the rights advocate over her input in The Hague-based ICC's inquiry into Gaza war crimes.

Comment: But Israel claims: 'Sounds incredible, right?' Netanyahu proclaims 'I care more about Palestinians than their leaders do'

Pentagon forced to acknowledge US ground troop presence in Libya

Previously denied reports of American troops on the ground in Libya have finally been confirmed by the Pentagon. The military admitted a "small number" of US forces in of Libya to support the local ones after launching airstrikes on ISIS targets

A "small number of US forces have gone in and out of Libya to exchange information with these local forces in established joint operations centers, and they will continue to do so as we strengthen the fight against [Islamic State] and other terrorist organizations," The Hill quoted Deputy Defense Press Secretary Gordon Trowbridge as saying on Wednesday.

Trowbridge explained that the ground troops entering Libya use joint operations rooms, which are away from the front line. The American soldiers help with the coordination between Libyan troops fighting Islamic State.

Trowbridge specified that American troops are providing "unique capabilities," including "intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and precision strikes — that will help enable GNA-aligned forces to make a decisive, strategic advance."

The revelation comes after the Pentagon said on August 1 that it was expanding its airstrikes against Islamic State into Libyan territory around Sirte, where the extremist group got its stronghold.

During the announcement, US made no reference to ground troops.

In fact, Trowbridge's confirmation comes only after The Washington Post brought to light on Tuesday reports that the US was "providing direct, on-the-ground support for the first time to fighters battling" Islamic State in Libya.

Comment: The Pentagon's actions are par for the course. But Kaine going off message from the Clinton war machine? Very interesting. Is it an attempt to woo the anti-war portion of the electorate. Once in office that POV will surely fall by the wayside.

Going against the grain? Clinton's Vice Presidential pick questions legality of waging war on Islamic State in Libya

DEA equivalently loyal to big pharma: Maintains cannabis has 'no medicinal value'

Cannabis poster graphic
The federal government has once again revealed itself as nothing more than puppets to the big pharma industry. On Thursday, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) moved to deny any changes to marijuana under its federal drug schedule, keeping the drug in the most restrictive category for U.S. law enforcement purposes.

For decades the pharmaceutical industry has poured millions into the pockets of corrupt politicians as they lobbied to keep cannabis illegal. As the Free Thought Project reported last month, a new study from the University of Georgia shows exactly why all that money was spent. Legal marijuana destroys big pharma's profits.

The study examined the costs of Medicare's prescription drug benefit program in 2013, a year when only 17 states and the District of Columbia had legalized medicinal marijuana. They found that legal pot contributed to a savings of $165.2 million in prescription costs. Researchers at the University of Georgia used those number to determine a savings in the hundreds of millions if all states would legalize medical cannabis.

Now it makes perfect sense why the DEA would maintain this asinine classification.

Washington versus Trump, Putin and Erdogan: Attempts at overthrowing elected governments

"Many of our interlocutors have been purged or arrested".James Clapper, US Director of Intelligence on Turkish Coup (Financial Times 8/3/16, p. 4)

Washington has organized a systematic, global, no holds barred campaign to oust Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump from the electoral process. The virulent anti-Trump animus, the methods, goals and mass media resemble authoritarian regimes preparing to overthrow political adversaries.

Comparable propaganda efforts led to political coups in Chile in 1973, Brazil 1964, ad Venezuela in 2002. The anti-Trump forces include both political parties, a Supreme Court judge, Wall Street bankers, journalists and editorialist of all the major media outlets and the leading military and intelligence spokespeople.

Washington's forcible and illegal ouster of Trump is part and parcel of a world-wide campaign to overthrow leaders and regimes which raise questions about aspects of the imperial policies of the US and EU.

We will proceed to analyze the politics of the anti-Trump elite, the points of confrontation and propaganda, as a prelude to the drive to oust opposition in Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

DHS study says 33,000+ people killed by Daesh and affiliated groups

According to a new study, the violent Daesh extremist group, along with its predecessors and affiliates, has carried out more than 4,900 attacks since 2002, killing over 33,000 people and wounding some 41,000.

Assaults by Daesh and affiliated organizations, stretching from the Middle East to European nations, also involved 11,000 hostage-takings or kidnappings, according to research released by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism at the University of Maryland.

The study, sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), claims that 13% of all terrorist attacks occurring between 2002 and 2015 were caused by Daesh and affiliated groups.

Comment: There's probably no reason to doubt the numbers, more or less. The relatively small number of casualties in Western countries, however, is probably overinflated. Take the Orlando shootings: there's no indication the shooter was affiliated with Daesh. And given that at least some of the victims were probably killed by 'friendly' fire, we'd have to add Orlando police to that list of Daesh affiliates. But the big problem with this study is the identification of Daesh and "affiliated groups". Many of these attacks are false flags. And all of them serve a U.S./NATO geopolitical agenda. So "Daesh-affiliated" groups really should include organizations like the CIA, MI6, Mossad, etc. And doing so would actually raise the numbers even higher.

Turkey seeks to expand defense relations with non-NATO countries

Ankara could seek ways of cooperation in the defense sector outside NATO, according to Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu signaled his country's readiness to develop defense cooperation outside NATO, the German news network N-TV reported.Cavusoglu noted, in particular, that the air defense systems installed by NATO do not cover the entire territory of Turkey.

"We want to make our own [missile] defense system... and we have relevant technology for the purpose. Other countries outside NATO also have advanced technology and know-how," Cavusoglu said.

At the same time, the top Turkish diplomat made it clear that Ankara is not going to withdraw from the alliance.

He was echoed by Turkish Ambassador to Russia Umit Yardim, who said that recent reports that Turkey and NATO are reassessing their relations and that "Turkey could be leaving NATO" hold no water.

He added, however, that NATO has no right to dictate what foreign policy decisions Turkey should take and what countries it should build relations with.

Yardim underscored that Turkey is "independent in creating its foreign policy."

Comment: Turkey has put itself in a difficult position vis a vis its East-West relations. One hopes that Erdogan will take whatever advice Putin has to offer in navigating it.
