Katoikos spoke to Mr. Jónasson about whistleblower protection, countering the rise of populism and Iceland's unique approach to the financial crisis.

Before becoming a member of the Althing, the Icelandic Parliament, Ögmundur Jónasson was a journalist engaged in trade union politics. In 1988 Mr. Jónasson became the chairman of BSRB, the Federation of state and municipal employees. A Left-Green Movement politician, he has held office as minister for health, minister for justice and human rights and minister for transport, communications and local government. The last two ministries were united to form the Ministry of the Interior at the beginning of 2011 and he became the first Icelandic minister for the interior.

Throughout our conversation, the politician shared his thoughts on the current political situation in Iceland, freedom of information and whistleblowers. Finally, he explained how Iceland overcame the financial crisis and analysed the political setting of the European Union.

Bitter battles rage around Palmyra as ISIS goes back on the attack

Recapture of Palmyra - if confirmed - to be an ephemeral victory for ISIS given importance of the city for Russia.

Even as the 'Great Battle of Aleppo' approaches its conclusion, confirmation that the elimination of the Jihadi pocket there will not end the war came with an ISIS offensive to recapture Palmyra in central Syria.

ISIS launched this offensive on Thursday, and it is apparently being given heavy publicity by ISIS in its various media outlets.

As is always the case in Syria, the fog of war is heavy, and it is not possible to know exactly what is going on.

However it seems that ISIS captured part of Palmyra yesterday but was then driven back by Syrian army counterattacks supported by the Russian air force.

"Over the past night, with active Russian air support, Syrian government forces repulsed all attacks by the terrorists on Palmyra," the ministry said in a statement.

Over 300 militants were killed in the offensive.

Graphic shows how MSM's fake news strategy was designed to short-circuit Pizzagate

fake news pizzagate trend
The Google graphic posted above is worth a million words...that essentially constitutes a scathing indictment of the Mainstream Media (MSM).

For those who are not good at reading graphs, may we spell it out for you?

The top RED line shows that the 'Fake News' meme was quite purposefully disseminated throughout the World Wide Web just 2 or 3 days before the PIZZAGATE scandal broke wide open. The bottom BLUE line shows the trending of PIZZAGATE on Google just after 'Fake News' was made to go viral (see how the RED line clearly dominates the BLUE line) In other words the new meme was deliberately planted in stories everywhere across the Internet. Even Obama went to Europe to talk about the "spread of fake news online" when he was in Germany in mid November.

In other words, the ruling elites, who are literally up to their eyeballs in pizza[GATE], ordered the MSM magnates to blitz the worldwide media with the 'Fake News' narrative just days before PIZZAGATE exploded on the scene. That's how really afraid the Deep State is of PIZZAGATE going supernova.

PIZZAGATE: A Complex and Convoluted Conspiracy at the Highest Echelons of the U.S. Federal Government is Exposed

They knew that they had no choice but to go totally ballistic on the Alt Media, as we were getting way too close to the most radioactive truth. After all, just how desperate must the MSM be to call everything that is not mainstream pap and piffle fake news. Talk about reckless, and hubris, and D E S P E R A T E! So desperate they are now carrying out false flag operations in D.C.

John Pilger's documentary: 'The Coming War on China' - breaking the silence with startling facts

With dozens of US military bases encircling China with a "giant noose," and America's historic nuclear presence in the Pacific region, a war between the greatest military power and the world's second largest economy "is no longer unthinkable," journalist John Pilger says.

In his documentary, 'The Coming War on China,' which is being aired on RT's documentary channel RTD this weekend, the multi-award winning journalist and filmmaker claims he aims "to break the silence." Pilger sets out several remarkable historic facts which bear testament to America's "sabre-rattling" in the Asia Pacific.

In the West, "the threat of China is becoming big news, the media is beating the drums of war as the world is being primed to regard China as a new enemy," the UK-based Australian journalist says. The mainstream media such as CNN get exclusive access to classified US surveillance flights over disputed islands in the South China Sea, which "have become a flashpoint for war between China and America."

But "what is not in the news is that China itself is under threat."

Austrian FM vows Vienna will veto EU membership talks with Turkey

Any further negotiations with Ankara over its future European Union membership will be blocked by Vienna, the Austrian Foreign Minister said, slamming Ankara's alleged human rights violations in the post-coup crackdown on any opposition.

The European Parliament passed a non-binding resolution on November 24 to freeze Turkey's EU accession process, citing Ankara's crackdown after July's failed coup. The final verdict on Turkey's immediate EU future will be decided following the European Council meeting that is scheduled to take place on December 15-16. Granting visa liberalization to Turkish citizens will also be on the table during the discussions.

Before the crucial meeting, the EU's General Affairs Council of foreign ministers, which meets once a month, will convene to discuss the potential role of Ankara in the EU.

EU threatens to take action against social media companies that don't censor all 'fake news' and 'hate speech' within 24 hours

facebook censorship, fake news
Did you know that earlier this spring, many U.S. tech megacompanies including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Microsoft all signed a "code of conduct" pledge promising the European Union they would work with an unelected EU commission to "sanction" and "criminalize" "individual perpetrators" of "hate speech" online.

In addition, these companies have signed up to "promote independent counter-narratives" favored by the EU. (Sounds like a "you can only spread our propaganda, not anyone else's" attitude, doesn't it?)

On Sunday, the same day a known actor walked into Pizzagate's Comet Ping Pong and fired an assault rifle at the floor in a crime the mainstream media is decrying as "fake news" and "hate speech" related, the EU also added "fake news" to its list of information to censor online.

Now the EU is threatening to escalate the situation up from "non-legislative" action if these companies don't take action to censor "hate speech" and "fake news" within 24 hours.

Comment: EU teams with social media in Orwellian plan to monitor & censor 'hate speech'
The Gatestone Institute reports that opponents to the EU initiative...

say that the EU's definition of "hate speech" and "incitement to violence" is so vague that it could include virtually anything deemed politically incorrect by European authorities, including criticism of mass migration, Islam or even the European Union itself.

Some Members of the European Parliament have characterized the EU's code of online conduct — which requires "offensive" material to be removed from the Internet within 24 hours, and replaced with "counter-narratives" — as "Orwellian."

Russian FM spokeswoman denies Lavrov verbal exchange with Reuters reporter

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova denied that there was a verbal exchange between a Reuters reporter and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, as reported in some media.

Several outlets covering a ministerial meeting of the OSCE countries in Hamburg have accused the Russian Foreign Minister of name-calling a Reuters journalist, citing a video recorded prior to Lavrov's meeting with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier. In the video Lavrov smiles and asks a cameraman: "What do you want?" When he does not receive a reply, Lavrov is seen to walk away murmuring something. Several sites were quick to accuse the Russian Foreign Minister of calling the cameraman "an idiot."
