Controversial DNI pick Dan Coats: Defends NSA, protects 'deep state', is banned from Russia, scandal in Germany

Dan Coats
© TimesFormer Senator Dan Coats: He's no Mr. Rogers!
Colleagues of former Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind., describe the septuagenarian as competent and congenial — the "Mister Rogers" of Republicans, as Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., said — but his positions on issues including NSA surveillance, Edward Snowden, torture, and Guantanamo Bay are bound to spark arguments with civil libertarians as Congress debates his nomination today by President-elect Donald Trump to succeed James Clapper as director of national intelligence.

In 2013, just one week after former NSA contractor Edward Snowden came forward as the source of documents revealing the global extent of the NSA's mammoth surveillance regime, Coats penned an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal lambasting the disclosures and the ensuing media coverage. "Unfortunately, the Obama administration — especially of late — has fueled people's distrust of government, which has made the reaction to Mr. Snowden's leak far worse," he wrote, pleading with his colleagues in Congress to stop "mischaracterizing" the surveillance programs Snowden exposed.

Coats said the NSA's programs, including its bulk collection of American telephone records, were "legal, constitutional and used under the strict oversight of all three branches of government" — though courts later disagreed, and Congress amended the law to end the American records collection program, as Snowden pointed out on Twitter on Thursday.

While Coats professed his belief in defending privacy and national security in tandem, he focused his efforts on making sure the deep national security state escaped unscathed — losing none of its powers to engage in mass spying. He pushed for counterintelligence policies that would root out leakers like Snowden in the future. "The government's interest is the most compelling imaginable: To the best of our ability, never again allow an attack on our homeland that costs innocent lives," he wrote in a piece in USA Today, touting a bill he proposed that would not have ended the bulk collection of American phone data.

Comment: Perhaps Trump should 'go back to the well' on this one. Coats has despicable and controversial baggage.

Jake Tapper asks the question Dems do not want to answer

Tapper Obama
© unknown"How's that cyber security holding up?"
Hey, even a broken clock like CNN can be right twice a day.

Grabien reports:
On Monday's broadcast of CNN's The Lead, anchor Jake Tapper asked if Russia hacked various Democratic officials in an attempt to influence the 2016 election, "isn't this all a huge failure of the Obama administration in terms of the cyber security and foreign relations? Under his watch, all this happened, to his party and to the detriment of his would-be successor, Hillary Clinton."

During an interview with Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Tapper said, "Now, obviously, if Russia committed this interference, as the US intelligence community says it did, this is Russia's doing. But on another level, to be perfectly candid, isn't this all a huge failure of the Obama administration in terms of the cyber security and foreign relations? Under his watch, all this happened, to his party and to the detriment of his would-be successor, Hillary Clinton."

Nailed it.

Comment: Tapper goes on to ask about why this issue can't just be solved by the Senate Intelligence Committee or Senate Foreign Relations committee instead of creating a by-partisan commission to investigate foreign interference in the election. In response, Klobuchar is a perfect example of a McCain-ite smearing Russia in broad terms, no examples or specifics. She does this easily, naturally. Ingrained thinking. Embedded response. Foregone conclusion.

Israeli diplomat's scheme to 'take down UK's Sir Alan Duncan, payback for settlements slam

Alan Duncan

Something is happening in the UK that is not happening in the U.S.: Al Jazeera is about to release a four part investigative series titled "The Lobby," on the influence of the Israel lobby in British politics.

Over the weekend, AlJazeera published one of the more damning findings: that an official of the reigning Conservative Party conspired with an Israeli diplomat in London about how to create a scandal so as to "take down... the Deputy Foreign Minister," Sir Alan Duncan, for being critical of Israeli settlements. Duncan is a member of the same Conservative Party that the conspirator is from.

Al Jazeera characterizes its investigative series:
The Israeli government is in the midst of a brazen, covert influence campaign in Britain, a six-month undercover investigation by Al Jazeera will reveal.
When is a mainstream news organization going to undertake such a project in the U.S.? (The New York Times has the revelation on page A3 today.)

The Israeli government has now apologized, saying that it rejects the comments and the scheme; and the British Foreign Secretary has accepted the apology.

Here's how Al Jazeera describes the undercover incident:
Robin [alias for an Al Jazeera journalist] posed as a graduate activist with strong sympathies towards Israel who was eager to help combat the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement prominent in Britain... Robin secretly filmed the moment at a London brasserie when Shai Masot, a senior political officer at the Israeli embassy, asked Maria Strizzolo, who was then chief of staff to MP Robert Halfon, the deputy chairman of the ruling Conservative Party: "Can I give you some MPs that I would suggest you take down?"

In response, Strizzolo said: "Well you know, if you look hard enough I'm sure that there is something that they're trying to hide."

"Yeah. I have some MPs," Masot replies.

"[Strizzolo] knows which MPs I want to take down ... The Deputy Foreign Minister."

Masot was referring to Sir Alan Duncan, the foreign office minister.

Strizzolo later hinted that "a little scandal" might see Duncan dismissed.

Comment: When it comes to talk of scandal and 'take down,' there are no 'innocent' conversations. See also: It is curious that in political and societal hierarchy, opposing opinions must be eliminated instead of bringing them to the fore and understanding a situation differently...a sad commentary on how far humanity, for the greater good, hasn't come.

Grozny: Chechens burn Baghdadi photos, denounce ISIS

Baghdadi

Relatives of those recruited by Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) burned portraits of the group's leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi at a rally in the Chechen capital of Grozny on Sunday. Several thousand people joined the protest against the extremist group near the Heart of Chechnya Mosque, the mayor's administration said.

The rally was organized by parents and relatives of those who were recruited by ISIS. The participants denounced the terrorist group for luring young people to fight for them in Syria and Iraq, urging Chechens not to fall for jihadist propaganda.

Former militant Said Mazhaev, who fought for Islamic State for seven months with his brother, who was killed, told the crowd that he was "deeply mistaken" by joining the group, and now has to make amends. "I could go to another place. I decided to come back home to pay for my mistake," Mazhaev, who spent eight months in jail, said. "I work with public organizations to explain to young people that there is only lies and deceit" with Islamic State, which is only trying to "divide us so we will kill each other," he explained.

Comment: A meaningful and cathartic demonstration by a Russian Muslim group in showing disapproval for terrorist activities and recruitment, exemplified by members of its community,

On the 1000th day of the war in Donetsk, Ukraine kidnaps civilians

Ukraine soldiers
Sunday, Jan. 8 marked the thousandth day of the Donbass War, and the Ukrainian Army found nothing better to do to mark this sinister anniversary than to kidnap about 20 civilians in the village of Kurakhovo by night, and bring them in handcuffs to the front, near the town of Maryinka. An ignoble war crime committed by the 10th Ukrainian Armed Forces Mountain Assault Brigade (FAU) and the Alfa unit of the Ukrainian Security Services (SBU).

Apprised of these deeds, the authorities of the People's Republic of Donetsk (DPR) called on the Ukrainian authorities to stop such crimes against humanity and urged the OSCE and UN representatives to take cognizance of the facts and to take action so that such provocations of the FAU can no longer take place.

One can only speculate on what motivated this new crime -- and what could have happened to these innocent people had the DPR army not been respecting the ceasefire. And especially about the propaganda and diplomatic use that Ukraine could have made of the death of these civilians.

What a farce! Democrats call for 9/11-style commission to probe Russia

Vladimir Putin
© Reuters
Congressional Democrats, and by extension the now concluded Clinton campaign, refuse to end pointing fingers for the turmoil rocking the Democratic party (and/or take responsibility) and instead Democratic members of Congress are trying to compare the "Russian hacking of the elections" to the Sept. 11 terrorist event, and called on Monday for the creation of an independent commission to probe Russia's attempts to intervene in the 2016 election, similar to the Sept. 11 panel that probed the 2001 attacks on the United States.

Of course, it took some 15 years for the true, un-redacted findings of that particular panel to finally emerge, when the extent of Saudi involvement in the Sept 11 attacks was finally revealed, leading to the Sept 11 legislation allowing Americans to sue Riyadh for terrorism on US soil.

According to Reuters, the proposed "Protecting our Democracy Act" would create a 12-member, bipartisan independent panel to interview witnesses, obtain documents, issue subpoenas and receive public testimony to examine attempts by Moscow and any other entities to influence the election. The panel members would not be members of Congress.

The latest legislation proposal is one of many calls by lawmakers to look into Russian involvement in the presidential contest whose outcome stunned so-called experts. Republicans also kept control of the Senate and House of Representatives by larger-than-expected margins.

Comment: These congressional idiots are really an embarrassment.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim had a two-day visit to Baghdad and Erbil over the weekend. Sputnik spoke in an interview with the Deputy Chairman of the parliamentary faction of the ruling Turkish Justice and Development Party (AKP) Bulent Turan regarding the visit and its effect on the fight against terrorists in the region.

"Looking at the whole picture, I want to say that our recent visits to Baghdad and Erbil have been very successful and yielded more positive results than was originally expected. Iraq is our neighbor, with which Turkey has long-standing close social, cultural and historical relations," Turan said.

Boiling point: Transcarpathia threatens Kiev with 'Donbass scenario'

Transcarpathia wall graffiti
"Transcarpathia is not Galicia"
Over the past year, the regional councils of a number of regions of Ukraine (Poltava and Ivano-Frankivsk) have adopted laws demanding that President Poroshenko empower regions' rights. Kiev has regarded these as manifestations of separatism. Now the baton has been taken by social organizations not only in Lvov, but also Transcarpathia. Indeed, it appears that Transcarpathis is gradually regaining the status of the main "separatist region" in Western Ukraine.

On October 12th, 2016, the chairman of the Transcarpathian Regional Council, Mikhail Rivis, demanded that the region be allocated more funds for developing infrastructure. Otherwise, Rivis threatened, Transcarpathia might secede from Ukraine. On December 2nd, in the Transcarpathian capital of Uzhgorod, a meeting of Hungarian youth and local deputies was held, whose participants proclaimed support for Rivis' statement that the region could separate from Ukraine and establish autonomy. Hungarian activists then called on President Poroshenko to sign a special agreement which was read aloud by the leader of the initiative, Hungarian activist Ivan Farkosz.
