A warning? U.S. defense official: ISIS has 'people in place' to conduct 'steady attacks'

Nice attacks in France
© Nader El Shafei via APWhile tightly organized attacks are decreasing, lone-wolf incidents such as the Nice, France, attack are likely on the rise.
The Islamic State of Iraq and al Sham (ISIS) terror group is under heavy global pressure from militaries and law enforcement organizations, but military and counterterrorism officials forecast no letup in the current wave of international terrorism.

"We think that transnational terrorist attacks, in the near term, will probably remain steady. The group has been able to build a robust and redundant apparatus for conducting transnational terrorist attacks," said a U.S. defense official.

ISIS will likely continue to employ a less-centralized approach to attacks, the official said — one driven by slick, incendiary online messages.

"They have a lot of people in place already that are sympathizers around the world. ... We think they will be able to continue to be able to produce at least a constant level of propaganda, which underpins a lot of the ideology in Europe and elsewhere," the official said.

Currently in Europe, the terror threat, which is high, is driven by ISIS, Al Qaida and other mostly Salafist groups.

Kristian Bartholin, deputy head of counterterrorism at the Council of Europe, said, "Due to the current high alert levels, it is difficult for terrorists to operate in traditional cell structures; hence, we see more 'lone wolf' attacks."

Comment: It seems as though the public is being prepared for more ISIS attacks. Listen to our recent interview with the Moriarty's for more of what might be coming to the U.S., Europe and elsewhere.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards have launched sophisticated rockets during military exercises, according to Tasnim news agency. It comes just weeks after the US put Iran "on notice" after it test-fired a medium-range ballistic missile.

The "smart and advanced" rockets were launched during three-day military drills which began on Monday in Iran's central desert, AP cited the semi-official Iranian news agency as saying.

Russian President Vladimir Putin posthumously awarded Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin the Order of Courage, the Kremlin said in a statement on its website.

Churkin died in New York on February 20. The diplomat would have turned 65 on Tuesday, February 21.

"For selflessness, perseverance and high professionalism shown at the post of Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations in New York... award the Order of Courage to Churkin Vitaly Ivanovich (posthumously)," the decree says.

RT's interview with Vitaly Churkin, Russia's Ambassador to the UN, was the diplomat's last TV interview. Churkin, who looked to be "in absolute good health," shared his views on "every single foreign policy issue," and told RT how "stressful" it was to be a diplomat.

RT's Aleksey Yaroshevsky, who interviewed Churkin, said he was shocked by the news of the UN ambassador's untimely passing, as when he spoke to him two weeks ago, "he looked to be in an absolutely good health."

Churkin "was energetic and animated during the interview," Yaroshevsky said. In fact, he had also asked the ambassador what it was like to be a diplomat these days.

EU shows US flag with 51 stars instead of 50 during Pence's visit to Brussels

Seems it's time for the EU authorities to start counting... stars, after an inaccurate US flag bearing 51 stars instead of 50 went on display during US Vice President Mike Pence's visit to Brussels.

A picture of the flag appeared in the background next to the EU flag during a press conference.

A US flag normally has nine rows of stars (alternating five or six stars in each row) against field of blue, but this one featured three rows of nine stars and three rows of eight stars - one too many, that is.

Comment: Judging from the picture three rows of stripes had to be added to the flag.

Trump turmoil proves NATO and Western order is so yesterday

With typical bluster of a real estate dealer, US President Trump claimed this week that his administration was a 'finely-tuned machine'. A nervous Europe and a disappointed Russia suggest something more precarious.

The business magnate turned president claims that the corporate news media in the US and Europe are determined to disparage his month-old administration as "chaotic". He has a valid point too.

Trump says relentless allegations of a "Russian connection" to his political aides are a "ruse" contrived by the media opposed to his presidency. The resignation of his top National Security Adviser Michael Flynn last week over allegations that he talked with a Russian diplomat before Trump's inauguration on January 20 was, in the president's view, a case of media-driven crisis.

The "charismatic" US president is an "atypical" politician who runs the country like "a large corporation," Vadim Lobov, executive director at the prestigious Synergy University in Moscow, told RT after visiting a high-profile gathering with Trump.

The meeting in question was the annual National Prayer Breakfast, held in Washington DC on February 2. Despite its official name, the "prayer breakfast" is more than just a cozy gathering, Lobov said.

Ukraine's decision to block the adoption by the UN Security Council of a statement dedicated to late Russian ambassador Vitaly Churkin is "beyond good and evil," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said during a joint press conference with his Swedish counterpart Margot Wallstroem following their meeting in Moscow on Tuesday, February 21.

The New American Witch Hunt: Did You Talk to the Russians?

burn the witch
Democrats, liberals and media pundits - in their rush to take down President Trump - are pushing a New McCarthyism aimed at Americans who have talked to Russians, risking a new witch hunt, reports Robert Parry.

In the anti-Russian frenzy sweeping American politics and media, Democrats, liberals and mainstream pundits are calling for an investigative body that could become a new kind of House Un-American Activities Committee to hunt down Americans who have communicated with Russians.

The proposed commission would have broad subpoena powers to investigate alleged connections between Trump's supporters and the Russian government with the apparent goal of asking if they now have or have ever talked to a Russian who might have some tie to the Kremlin or its intelligence agencies.

Such an admission apparently would be prima facie evidence of disloyalty, a guilt-by-association "crime" on par with Sen. Joe McCarthy's Cold War pursuit of "communists" who supposedly had infiltrated the U.S. government, the film industry and other American institutions.

4 dead Russian Ambassadors in 3 months

Russia's long time ambassador to the UN has died suddenly in New York - this is the fourth Russian diplomat who has died in the last 3 months.

Putin at funeral
Vitaly Churkin was one of the wisest voices in international diplomacy. His voice will no longer echo in the halls of the United Nations. Articulate, polite yet commanding, wise yet affable, he oversaw some of Russia's and the world's most important events in a position he occupied since 2006.

Churkin had to face a great deal of hostile criticism from both the Bush and Obama administrations during his time at the UN, but he always did so with grace. He never failed to explain the Russian position with the utmost clarity.
