OMG! Constitutional reform was to boost Erdogan's accountability, not powers

Erdogan
© The Indian ExpressCompletely misunderstood.
Vice Chairman of the ruling Justice and Development Party said that amendments to Turkey's constitution approved at the nationwide referendum do not extend presidential powers, but rather are aimed to increase the accountability of the president by providing the parliament with capabilities to formally investigate the sitting leader, Vice Chairman of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Istanbul Fatih Tuna told Sputnik.

On Sunday, over 51 percent of Turkish voters supported the proposed reform turning Turkey into presidential republic which was criticized by many European leaders who expressed concerns that it would grant unlimited powers to current President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and potentially harm the country's democracy.

"There is no extension of the president's powers... New system provides catching out much power from the president even to the parliament ... Today president cannot be sued for any action he has done except betraying the country. Only one subject you can question or sue him. But in a new system you can sue him on any subject. Parliament will become much stronger," Tuna said.

Comment: They can call it whatever they like but Erdogan wouldn't have pursued this outcome if he wasn't the biggest recipient of the rewards.

A review of China-North Korean relations during the past year

china north korea relationship
Touching upon the topic of difficulties with the PRC and RK, we will talk about the DPRK. Here, on the one hand, Beijing demonstrates loyalty to the UN resolutions on sanctions, which it can formally fulfill; on the other, it does not go beyond them.

As Foreign Ministry Spokesman Geng Shuang said on November 25, 2016,
"China fully and unswervingly observes the Security Council resolutions on sanctions against the DPRK. At the same time, we believe that the Security Council sanctions against the DPRK should not have a negative impact on the life of the population and the humanitarian needs of the DPRK. Security Council Resolution 2270 prohibits North Korea from exporting coal, iron and iron ore to other countries. At the same time, exports aimed at meeting the needs of people's lives and not aimed at financing the nuclear and missile program are not affected. China imports coal from the DPRK in line with the Security Council resolution. "
The issue was related to the fact that, as it turned out, in October 2016, China's imports of coal from the DPRK increased by 40% compared to September. As reported in the Chinese customs department on November 25, 2016, in October the volume of China-North Korean trade grew by 21.1% in the last year and amounted to 525 million 240 thousand dollars. At the same time, the volume of North Korean imports increased by 27.6%, reaching 238 million 380 thousand dollars, while the export to the DPRK increased by 16.1%. Thus, bilateral trade grew for the third month in a row.

Did the US push North Korea to build nukes?

Let's say you know someone who wears funny blue suits and doesn't share your views on politics. So you decide to stick this person in a cage and put him on a diet of bread and water until he agrees to change his wardrobe and adjust his thinking. And when he sits quietly on the cage-floor with his hands folded, you ignore him altogether and deal with other matters. But when he stomps his feet in anger or violently shakes the cage, you throw cold water on him or poke him in the back with a sharp stick.

How long do you think it'll take before your prisoner changes his clothes and comes around to [the] "exceptional" way of seeing things?

It's never going to happen, is it, because your whole approach is wrong. People don't respond positively to hectoring, intimidation and cruelty, in fact, they deeply resent it and fight back. And, yet, this is exactly the way Washington has treated North Korea for the last 64 years. Washington's policy towards the DPRK is not comprised of "carrots and sticks"; it's sticks and bigger sticks. It's entirely based on the assumption that you can persuade people to do what you want them to do through humiliation, intimidation and brute force.

But the policy hasn't worked, has it, because now the North has nuclear weapons, which is precisely the outcome that Washington wanted to avoid. So we don't even have to make the case that US policy is a flop, because the North's nuclear arsenal does that for us. Case closed!

So the question is: What do we do now?

Comment: Well, that's about as plain as the freckle on Trump's nose...but it is Trump's nose, and Trump's eyes that can't see it.

Thanks for the help, Washington! Russia's oil and gas industry is booming BECAUSE of sanctions

russian oil and gas operations
Financial Times shows sanctions have triggered a technological boom and a successful restructuring within Russia's oil and gas industry

The sectoral sanctions the Western powers imposed on Russia in July 2014 because of the conflict in the Donbass continue to have paradoxical results.

The financial sanctions, which effectively prevented Russian companies from borrowing in Western financial markets, instead of causing the Russian economy to implode, have caused it to deleverage at an unprecedented rate, hugely strengthening Russia's financial sector and the balance sheets of Russia's companies, setting the scene for a coming investment boom.

The counter-sanctions Russia imposed prohibiting the importation of Western foodstuffs into Russia have led to a huge boom in Russia's agriculture sector, as even the Financial Times was recently forced to admit, making Russia almost completely self-sufficient in food, and making it a major food exporter.

However perhaps the most paradoxical result of all has been in Russia's oil and gas industry.

Two Japanese Navy destroyers have joined the carrier strike group USS Carl Vinson heading towards the Korean Peninsula for a massive show of force as North Korea prepares to mark the 85th anniversary of the foundation of its military.

The Japanese warships, destroyers 'Ashigara' and 'Samidare', left the navy's Sasebo base early on Friday for a rendezvous with the USS Carl Vinson group off North Korean shores, NHK reports.

Defense Ministry officials said the details of the joint US-Japan naval exercise are yet to be determined. The drill comes as an apparent show of force aimed at deterring North Korea, which will mark the 85th anniversary of the foundation of its military next week.

Democratic super PAC releases bizarre attack ad: 'That's the sound of Putin laughing at us'

A Democratic funding group has released a bizarre new ad that features a laughing 'Vladimir Putin', in an unlikely bid to pressure Republicans into supporting an inquiry into President Donald Trump's alleged ties with Russia.

The commercial comes from the super PAC American Bridge 21st Century, who reportedly spent some $140,000 on three radio ads targeting "vulnerable" Republican senators Will Hurd, Martha McSally and John Katko for not supporting an independent commission to investigate Trump's "dangerous ties" to Russia.

Bloomberg fake news: Russia supposedly integrating Donbass into the Federation

Bloomberg headline
The Kremlin has no desire to recognize the Donbass as an independent state. Instead, the country's leadership intends to conduct a "gradual" integration of Donbass, writes Bloomberg.

According to the agency, this integration will completely separate Donetsk and Lugansk regions from Ukraine. This is the opinion of three people who claim to be close to the leadership in Moscow, noting that this is the "real strategy" of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Ukraine.

Bloomberg points out that the Russian leader effectively uses the United States position of uncertainty in the Ukraine, which practically "buries hopes for European mediation of the peace agreement and exemption from sanctions in the near future."

Camille Paglia opines Trump already headed to re-election - Dems have overplayed their hand

New York Times columnist Frank Bruni moderates a Times Talk discussion between legendary feminist Camille Paglia and Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen about life in the Trump era.

Paglia says Bruni's newspaper and the Democratic Party still have "soul searching" left to do about why they called 2016 wrong. "It is incumbent upon the defeated party to pull itself together, or else we're going to get the reelection of the present administration," she said.

"I didn't take him seriously at all," she said about the early days of the Trump campaign. "And then, shortly after the very first Republican debate, I saw Diamond & Silk, the African-American sisters doing a pro-Trump attack on Megyn Kelly on their podcast, and... I suddenly saw the populism, and from that moment forward, I could feel the momentum of it."

"The New York media was in an absolute bubble about this," she added.

Ukrainian Nazi Azov leader threatens new Odessa bloodbath on May 9

Nazi Azov battalion/regiment and leader of the National Corps Party, Andrey Biletsky
Today, April 21st, frightening news came from Kiev. The founder of the Nazi Azov battalion/regiment and leader of the National Corps Party, Andrey Biletsky, announced in an interview for Ukraine's Channel 112 that if police "continue to humor anti-Ukrainian movements," then "civil clashes" will rock Ukraine. Biletsky called the anti-fascist profession held in Odessa on April 10th on the anniversary of the city's liberation from the German fascist invaders such an "anti-Ukrainian movement." In Biletsky's words, "We will see a second Sabbath in Odessa on May 2nd, in the East on May 9th, and in Kiev on May 9th. But in Ukraine, there are many young people who oppose this."

It follows from the aforesaid that celebrating May 9th, Victory Day, is essentially outside the law in Ukraine. During the Second World War, the Soviet Union destroyed approximately 90% of all Nazi German forces - many times more than all the Allied countries combined. But now Ukraine, a successor to this great victory, wants to deprive Ukrainians of this commemorative victory day. Biletsky, whose own personal idol is Adolf Hitler, is turning Ukraine from a victor country into a loser country.

Newsweek propagates delusional idea that Steve Bannon and Vladimir Putin have 'ideological ties'

Trump austin powers villians
You don't think Kremlin and Bannon have "ideological ties"? That's because you don't read Newsweek

Here's the thing. Bannon got demoted earlier this month. He's no longer in Trump's innermost circle.

Establishment media, which always hated the conservative populist, is understandably emboldened. They think he might go the way of Mike Flynn and be thrown out completely.

To help things along they're more than willing to do what they do best; concoct bizarre theories tying the target to Vladimir Saddamovich Putin.

Heck, they might be silly but they seemed to work in getting Flynn replaced and Trump neutered.
