Culture of concealment: The UK government's brazen duplicity in Yemen

Last month, on the last day of the current UK parliamentary session before its summer recess, a particularly obnoxious new British tradition called "take out the trash day" was enacted.

The UK government is obliged to issue all its public reports before the end of the parliamentary year, but to avoid scrutiny from MPs, the government now regularly withholds any potentially embarrassing reports until the very last day of that session. It can then release them safe in the knowledge that there will be no time left for MPs to examine them, and no opportunity to question ministers over them.

So having issued very little information over the preceding weeks, as MPs were heading back to their constituencies, the government took the opportunity to release dozens of reports and ministerial statements detailing everything from cuts to police, to the revolving door between cabinet ministers and private corporations, to the millions in legal fees the government spent attempting to prevent parliamentary scrutiny of Brexit.

Buried deep among them was a Foreign Office report on the state of human rights in 30 countries deemed to be of "priority concern". What makes the report embarrassing to Britain, however, is that 20 of these countries are major customers of British arms exports, with Saudi Arabia, of course, topping the list.

Donald Trump tweeted that his first order as president was to renovate and modernize the American nuclear arsenal, which is now stronger "than ever before," adding that Washington will never allow any nation to surpass US power.

Trump also said that he hopes the US will never have to use its nuclear weapons.

'Poison Papers': Monsanto knew of grave health risks from toxic PCB chemicals it sold for years before ban

Monsanto used toxic industrial chemicals known as PCBs in the production of everyday appliances such as TVs, fridges and plastics for at least eight years after discovering the harm they did, newly-compiled archives claim to prove.

From the 1930s, and until the end of their distribution in 1977, Monsanto was the dominant US producer of the chemicals.

Now a trove of 20,000 documents, dubbed the "Poison Papers," gathered from regulators, lawsuits and archives by campaigners and scientists, claims that the Missouri-headquartered company openly discussed the environmental and health impact of PCBs.

"If authentic, these records confirm that Monsanto knew that their PCBs were harmful and pervasive in the environment, and kept selling them in spite of that fact. They knew the dangers, but hid them from the public in order to profit," Bill Sherman, the assistant attorney general for the state of Washington, which is suing the company, told the Guardian.

Comment: This list of Monsanto's evil doings is a long one. Here is just a sampling:

Analyzing the North Korean threat that prompted Trump's "fire and fury"

north korea launch
The Korean People's Army [KPA] Strategic Force, which is responsible for North Korea's ballistic missile units, issued a statement on August 8 (Tuesday) in which it said it was "now carefully examining the operational plan for making an enveloping fire at the areas around Guam" using the Hwasong-12 ballistic missile. The statement also alluded to a meeting of DPRK national security principals' meeting in March 2013 that revealed the notorious "Map of Death."

The KPA Strategic Force's statement is a reaction to the August 2, 2017 testing of the Minuteman III missile and contains "keeping our options open" diction and syntax of prior products of DPRK tactical rhetoric. This, of course, has not inhibited misleading and slipshod analyses that link the Strategic Force's statement to the "fire and fury" comments made by US President Donald Trump.

If anyone is looking for a definitive "threat" statement from the DPRK, it will come either in the form state media reporting on #1 Event (i.e. Kim Jong Un convenes another principals' meetings, maps or not; "once Kim Jong Un makes a decision") or a statement from a supreme power organization such as the State Affairs Commission, the KPA Supreme Command or a joint communique of the Workers' Party of Korea [WPK] Central Committee and Central Military Commission.

Comment: In other words, no, technically NK didn't just threaten Guam with immediate destruction. It's more typical bluster and bluff. The U.S. stages a drill, the North Koreans say they're working on a plan to take out some American hardware, the U.S. responds that all options are on the table. The only thing different is that this time, Trump responded with just as much "crazy". North Korean leadership isn't used to that. With Trump playing bad cop, and Tillerson good cop, perhaps the holding pattern will change. See: North Korea's strategy: Rational player pretending to be irrational

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has threatened to unleash the full might of the military against the private militias of corrupt politicians, including sending in fighter jets to bomb their positions.

The president was giving a speech in which he revealed he had expanded the list of politicians suspected to be involved in the drugs trade.

"Even if you have 100-200 armed men, that will not help," he said, as quoted by the Manila Bulletin on Tuesday. "Why would you put up a fight? I have 12 FA-50 jets. I will drop five bombs on you. I will really use the force of the government."

"I told you not to contradict the government. I will use the government because I have to protect the people who represent the government. I will not hesitate."

Lavrov downplays North Korean saber-rattling, tells US to 'remain calm'

Russia's top diplomat downplayed North Korea's nuclear saber-rattling following a diplomatic summit Tuesday, and said the United States has to take "prudent" steps to deescalate the crisis.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized that North Korea always complains about sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council. The regime threatened a "physical" response to the new sanctions and warned South Korea it has the ability turn "Seoul into a sea of flame," but Lavrov betrayed little alarm.

"Strictly speaking, this is how representatives of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea have reacted to all previous U.N. Security Council resolutions,"he told reporters Tuesday following an east Asia diplomatic summit in the Philippines. "We will judge by their actions."

Israel, Russia and the United States held several rounds of secret talks to discuss the ceasefire in southern Syria and creation of de-escalation zones on the country's borders with Israel and Jordan, the Haaretz newspaper reported Wednesday, citing Israeli and European politicians.

According to the news outlet, the meetings were held in the Jordanian capital of Amman and one of the European capitals before the Russia-US agreement on Syrian ceasefire was announced on July 7. The Israeli side reportedly objected to the deal due to the fact the Moscow and Washington did not focus their attention on the withdrawal of Iranian forces from Syria.

The unnamed sources told the newspaper that the talks engaged leading diplomats, defense and security officials from the three countries. The Israeli side reportedly included representatives from the country's Foreign Ministry, the Defense Ministry and intelligence community. The US team was comprised of US Special Envoy for Syria Michael Ratney, Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIS (Daesh, a terrorist group banned in Russia) Brett McGurk. The Russian delegation was represented by Special Presidential Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentyev, the newspaper said.

Why journalists who solicited Russiagate leaks may be prosecuted

criminal trial
There may be grounds to bring a prosecution on the grounds that soliciting the leaks were an incitement to commit law-breaking, defeating the traditional defences available to the press under the First Amendment and the public interest defence.

Whilst there has never been any doubt that the leakers within the US bureaucracy who have been leaking stories about Donald Trump and his administration are breaking the law, like most people I have assumed that the newspapers, media organisations and journalists who have been publishing the leaks are not doing so.

This is because of the defences which like most people I have assumed are available to the newspapers, media organisations and journalists which have been publishing these leaks under the First Amendment to the US Constitution (which explicits protects the freedom of the press) and through the public interest defence.

I have for some time begun to develop doubts about this as the campaign against Donald Trump and his administration has gathered force, and as the leaking has become increasingly cynical and abusive.

Israeli forces' retaliatory air attacks on Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip wounded at least four Palestinians, local al-Shifa hospital's Emergency Director Ayman al Sahbani said Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said a projectile launched from Gaza Strip hit an open area in the Ashkelon region of Israel, causing no injuries. Hamas spokesman Hazem Qasem dismissed the allegation.

"The fourth person, a 26-year-old, is in serious condition. He has a fractured skull and is unconscious in the ICU [intensive care unit]," Sahbani said, quoted by Al Jazeera broadcaster, specifying that three other victims underwent treatment and were sent home.

The broadcaster also noted that the Israeli airstrikes, conducted Tuesday, were aimed against Hamas militants in three locations.

Iran's Ghadir investment company, Russia's Zarubezhneft oil and gas intermediary and Turkey's Unit International have signed an agreement on joint investments in oil and gas fields' development projects, following a meeting in Moscow, Iranian media reported Tuesday.

According to Shana News Agency, it is expected that the parties will set up joint ventures to finance projects both in Iran and outside the country.

Each company will allocate equal investment shares in the jointly financed projects, with Iran's Ghadir Exploration and Production Company in charge of leading the consortium. Zarubezhneft, Ghadir and Unit International also agreed on joining technical and economic efforts, the news outlet reported.

This is a landmark agreement for the Iranian petrochemical industry, the first trilateral investment deal the country's company has closed with foreign partners.
