With more Yellow Vests protests approaching this weekend Elysee Palace is worried about a possible coup attempt. Calls have been made to attack parliamentarians and police forces, French media report.

Even though the French government abandoned the fuel tax hike after sweeping protests, the movement still calls upon its followers to gather on December 8. "The Act IV" will be held under the motto "we stay on our course." The Facebook event has already counted 6,000 people who wish to participate and 22,000 others who are "interested."

On Thursday Eric Drouet one of the movement's most famous leaders announced the Yellow Vests plans to approach the residence of Emmanuel Macron. "Saturday will be the final outcome, Saturday is the Elysee, we all would like to go to the Elysee," he said.

The intelligence services have reported to the Elysee Palace, the official residence of the president, that there have been "calls to kill" and "carry arms to attack" parliamentarians, government officials and police officers, Le Figaro newspaper said on Thursday.

Ukrainian MPs want to make Nazi collaborator Bandera a national hero again

Lawmakers from Ukraine's two biggest parties have filed a motion asking the Ukrainian president to posthumously bestow the 'Hero of Ukraine' award upon nationalist leader Stepan Bandera, a known Nazi collaborator.

MPs from Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's "Solidarity" block together with the right-wing People's Front party have backed a draft resolution asking him to award Bandera, the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), the country's highest state award.

Bandera is a deeply divisive figure in the Ukrainian history but is considered by many to be a hero, despite his violent methods and accusations of condoning an ethnic cleansing of thousands of Poles in what is now western Ukraine.

Before the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, Bandera's OUN collaborated with the Nazis, declaring an independent nation shortly after enemy troops arrived, on June 30, 1941. The founding document known as "the act of restoration of Ukrainian state" includes explicit pledges to Nazi Germany.

The delegations of the Yemeni government and the Houthi militants have signed an agreement on the exchange of detainees and prisoners of war during peace talks in Stockholm, UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths has stated.

"Today I am also pleased to announce the signing of an agreement on the exchange of prisoners, detainees, the missing, the forcibly detained, and individuals placed under house arrest. This is a huge tribute to those here present and of enormous importance to many thousands of families who seek [their] return. It will allow thousands of families to be reunited, and it is a product of very effective, active work from both delegations, and I am very grateful. What we will do here and in the coming weeks is [working] on the implementation of that agreement and make it happen," Griffiths said during a press conference.

According to the special envoy, the consultations in Sweden may see the sides touch upon general points regarding the settlement of the conflict.

'Demonstrating valor from 400km away': Moscow rebuffs Pentagon's naval bravado in Sea of Japan

The US Navy bragged that its destroyer came to "challenge" Moscow in the Sea of Japan, but the ship didn't even come near Russia's territorial waters and was tracked all the way, the Defense Ministry said.

The US Pacific Fleet destroyer, 'USS McCampbell', entered the Sea of Japan on Wednesday. In a typical rah-rah fashion, the fleet's spokesperson, Lieutenant Rachel McMarr, claimed that the ship sailed there to "challenge Russia's excessive maritime claims."

She explained that such operations "demonstrate the United States will fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows."

It is the first time since 1987 when a US warship conducted a freedom of navigation operation close to Russian territorial waters in the Peter the Great Bay, the navy official boasted.

OPEC agrees to cut oil production but will wait until meeting with Russia to decide on specific levels

OPEC has reportedly agreed to cut oil production, but the cartel ended its closely-watched meeting on Thursday without specifying how many barrels it would aim to remove from the market.

The influential OPEC oil cartel gathered at its headquarters in Vienna, Austria with the aim of reaching an accord over throttling back output. The 15-member organization will hold talks with allied oil-producing nations including Russia on Friday.

The much-anticipated meeting comes at a time when the oil market is near the bottom of its worst price plunge since the 2008 financial crisis. Oil prices have crashed around 30 percent over the last two months, ratcheting up the pressure on budgets in oil-exporting countries.

Yet Russia's refusal to commit to a production quota and OPEC's failure to hammer out the details of a deal underscore the divisions among producers, despite consensus that the group needs to take some form of action to boost the market.

Mueller's team recommended a lenient sentence for former National Security Advisor Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn and no jail time

Special Counsel Robert Mueller released his highly redacted and anticipated memo Tuesday, recommending a lenient sentence for former National Security Advisor Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn and no jail time. The memo noted that "the defendant's substantial assistance and other consideration" was the reason Mueller recommended the lenient sentence for the retired Army three-star general.

The six-page memo went on to state that 'a sentence at the low end of the guideline range, including a sentence that does not impose a term of incarceration - is appropriate and warranted."

Putin calls for common dollar-less payment system as key for economic sovereignty

Russian President Vladimir Putin opened the meeting of the Eurasian Economic Council Thursday by calling on the member states of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) to consider the idea of creating a common payment infrastructure.

"We suggest that the issue of creating common payment infrastructure using up-to-date financial technologies in EEU should be developed," he said.

"That would enhance sustainability of national payment systems of the EEU countries by making them less dependent on the dollar and other foreign currencies," the Russian president explained.

This means "boosting economic sovereignty," Putin added.

Best of the Web: Stephen Cohen: The New Cold War is more dangerous than the first one

nuclear explosion mushroom cloud
The owl of Minerva spreads its wings only with the falling of dusk. - Hegel
War With Russia?, like the biography of a living person, is a book without an end. The title is a warning - akin to what the late Gore Vidal termed "a journalistic alert-system" - not a prediction. Hence the question mark. I cannot foresee the future. The book's overarching theme is informed by past and current facts, not by any political agenda, ideological commitment, or magical prescience.
This article is adapted from the concluding section of Stephen F. Cohen's War With Russia? From Putin and Ukraine to Trump and Russiagate, just published, in paperback and e-book, by Skyhorse Publishing.
To restate that theme: The new US-Russian Cold War is more dangerous than was its 40-year predecessor that the world survived. The chances are even greater that this one could result, inadvertently or intentionally, in actual war between the two nuclear superpowers. Herein lies another ominous indication. During the preceding Cold War, the possibility of nuclear catastrophe was in the forefront of American mainstream political and media discussion, and of policy-making. During the new one, it rarely seems to be even a concern.
