The real solution in Syria begins after Israel's failed attempt to start World War III

There is one thing that Israel fears more than anything else in Syria. The loss of its ability to fly its F-16's with impunity and hit whatever targets it wants claiming defensive measures to stop Iran, their existential enemy.

Israel finally admitted to carrying out over 200 such missions over the past 18 months, only a few of which ever made any kind of international media, recently.

And with the sneak attack on Latakia which involved using a Russian IL-20 ELINT war plane as radar cover Israel has now not only raised the stakes to an unacceptable level, it has also ensured that this may be the last such aerial assault it will ever be able to carry out.

The setup is pretty clear. Israel and France coordinated an attack on multiple targets within Syria without US involvement but with absolute US knowledge of the operation to provoke Russia into going off half-cocked by attacking the inconsequential French frigate which assisted Israel's air attack.

Comment: A number of commentators seem to be in agreement that it was no coincidence that the latest Israeli dirty trick came right after Putin and Erdogan reached an agreement regarding Idlib:

U-turn on multiculturalism? Danish public broadcaster told to stress importance of country's roots in Christianity

New guidelines for the Danish public broadcaster DR have put an emphasis on its highlighting the roots in Christianity of the country's society, instead of multiculturalism and integration, which DR had been promoting.

The new contract with the state broadcaster was published by the Danish Ministry of Culture on Tuesday. Apart from budget cuts, which could mean up to 400 jobs losses, the document signals a huge change in broadcaster's programming.

The contract states that the DR must make it clear that Danish society is based on principles of "democracy and has its roots in Christianity." Previous issues of the contract had stated the broadcaster should "work for the promotion of integration in Danish society."

The vague "integration" reference has been dropped and now the broadcaster's mission is described as being to "promote a Denmark based on community, built on values of democracy, equality and free speech."

'Get your rifle, piece of trash': Maduro lambasts OAS chief who suggested "military intervention" in Venezuela

Nicolas Maduro has lashed out at the head of the Organization of American States (OAS), calling him a "piece of trash" that belongs in "history's dump," for hinting at the possibility of military intervention against Venezuela.

OAS Secretary-General, Luis Almagro, should "prepare his rifle" if he wants to invade his country, Maduro said during a press conference in Caracas on Tuesday, adding that "we are waiting for you here."

The Venezuelan leader called Almagro a "piece of trash" belonging to the "dump of history."

"Venezuela is a country of men and women who will force such trash as this to respect them," he added.

Leaked Daily Mail CCTV of Petrov, Boshirov proves Metro Police lied about their Salisbury timeline

boshirov petrov
Here's a question for those who have been scratching their heads over the Salisbury poisonings, and even those who haven't: How many clear pieces of CCTV footage from 4th March of people connected or allegedly connected to the case have you seen?

The images of Mr Skripal's car being driven down India Avenue and then Devizes Road do not count, since there is no clear image of the person or persons in the car. Nor does the two seconds of CCTV footage of a couple (not the Skripals) walking through Market Walk, since it is notoriously unclear and blurry. Nor do the images of Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov traipsing around airports and train stations and the centre of Salisbury, since those are stills.

No, I'm talking about actual footage of actual people moving from one place to another - you know, like people do - and in which they can be clearly recognised.

The answer, unless I have missed something, is one. That's it. Yes, I understand (as people remind me from time to time), that the police are under no obligation to give a running commentary on the case, or release loads of CCTV footage. True, but you'd think that since this is the biggest investigation this country has ever seen in our lifetimes, and with so much at stake, there would have been something. An image of the Skripals, perhaps? Feeding the ducks, perhaps? Or would duck-feeding compromise national security?

Trump: 'Single worst mistake in American history was going into the Middle East'

bush mission accomplished
In a wide ranging interview with The Hill on Tuesday conducted in the Oval Office, President Trump was asked to give his take on the biggest mistake in American history.

Considering just how open-ended a question that is, it's perhaps surprising that he merely went back less than a couple decades into the Bush presidency, though Trump's base will certainly welcome it as it hearkens back to his "America First" foreign policy vision of the campaign trail.

"The worst single mistake ever made in the history of our country: going into the Middle East, by President Bush," the president during his interview with Hill.TV.

"Obama may have gotten them (U.S. soldiers) out wrong, but going in is to me the biggest single mistake made in the history of our country," he said.

Trump explained the reasoning behind this choice, and why it wasn't something like the civil war or another defining and devastating event reaching far into American History.

Comment: While Trump hasn't really done much to reduce involvement in the wars his predecessors have started (Afghanistan and Yemen come to mind), to his credit he hasn't started any new ones. One wonders if he will be able to get through another 2 years without doing so.

Kavanaugh accusations expose all that's wrong with #MeToo: Old, unproven, politically timed to ruin

metoo sign
The out-of-nowhere sexual abuse claim concerning the Supreme Court nominee contains every alarming aspect of the #MeToo movement - and should make those on either side of the political divide shudder. Here's why.

One caveat before we break it down: unlike many of the others weighing in, we do not pretend to know the truth of what happened (or did not) between Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford. New facts may come to light and settle the case, but the damage described below happened before any of them were known.

No evidence necessary

There is no direct, or circumstantial evidence, or eyewitness statements proving that a drunk teenage Kavanaugh really pinned down Blasey Ford on the bed, and tried to rape her while covering her mouth with his hand, during a house party. In fact, other than this vivid scene, the accuser has failed to remember the dates or places or context of the events. Beyond that: as soon as the story broke, when the details were still just anonymous Beltway hearsay, for some that was enough to disqualify the nominee.

"Immigration is not a human right": Hungary's FM slams 'pro-migrant' UN officials for "spreading lies"

Hungary's Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has accused the UN human rights watchdog of "spreading lies" about his country, saying that immigration was not a "fundamental human right."

The official took aim at the "independent experts" with the UN Human Rights Council, stating they "should not be independent from the truth."

"Recently, unfortunately, some UN officials started to spread lies against and about my country," Szijjarto told the UN body's meeting on Wednesday.

Such officials would like to "force on us impossible things," namely allowing illegal migrants into the country, Szijjarto stated. "They say that migration is a fundamental human right, which is a lie," he stressed.

Cultural genocide? Ukrainian region bans Russian language songs, films, books... and more

Lvov armor plant celebrates Europe Day.
© stringer / SputnikLvov armor plant celebrates Europe Day.
A region in western Ukraine has decided to ban public displays of pretty much anything in Russian, claiming the move is necessary to preserve unity in the country. The authors want the ban to go nationwide.

The Lvov region's legislature voted on Tuesday to impose a moratorium on the "public use of Russian-language cultural products in all forms," with 58 votes in favor, exceeding the 43 necessary.

The "moratorium" is to remain in place until there is "a full de-occupation of Ukrainian territory," practically making it a permanent ban.

In addition to banning Russian songs, films, books and... whatever else, the lawmakers said they would recommend a similar ban to the national parliament. They said rooting out the Russian language was necessary "to protect the Ukrainian information space from hybrid action by the aggressor-state [Russia] and reverse the consequences of many years of Russification."

Comment: Just imagine if the language in question was Hebrew, or Yiddish...

The ban is the latest in a long string of attacks on the Russian language in Ukraine, where it continues to be the largest minority language, used by millions in daily life, despite years of antagonism with Moscow.

Don't hold your breath! Justice Dept likely to slow-walk declassification

Trump
Don't hold your breath. While the media is breathlessly describing yesterday's order by President Donald Trump's "to provide for the immediate (emphasis added) declassification" of Russia-gate materials as a "showdown," any likely showdown is months away, if it comes at all.

The word "immediate" can mean different things to different people. Had the President set a deadline, or had he given the declassification task to his own National Security Council, the word "showdown" might be closer to what to expect.

The tragic-comedy now on stage in Washington is beyond bizarre. Can President Trump be unaware that those he "ordered" to do the declassification - top officials of the Justice Department, the FBI, and the intelligence agencies - have zero incentive to comply "immediately." And they have minus-zero incentive, as the top echelons see it, to throw their former bosses, colleagues, and co-conspirators under the bus by releasing the family jewels.

Most of today's commentary by anonymous officials on declassification are transparently bogus. To suggest, for example, that "death could occur," as one MSNBC pundit predicted this afternoon, is beyond ludicrous. Do not expect Establishment media, however, to stop its feeding frenzy at the Deep State trough.

Comment: We're not holding our breath either. As McGovern says, no actual 'deadline' was stated for declassifying these documents and neither any desire by the FBI to further expose the sham that is Russia-gate. Even if there was an immediate release and the documents contained 'bombshell' information don't count on any person of importance being served any justice. If there was any chance of that, Hillary would have been in jail by now, among others. See also: Trump orders immediate release of all text messages related to Russia investigation, unredacted

Satellite images show Syria strike as Israeli Air Force chief goes to Moscow to explain Il-20 incident

Timely released satellite images have revealed the destruction left by IDF air strikes in Syria's Latakia after Israel was forced to make a rare admission to the raid which resulted in the downing of the Russian Il-20 recon plane.

On Wednesday, Israeli satellite imaging company ImageSat released three photos of an "ammunition warehouse" in Latakia, showing it before and after the Monday night attack. The three photos, posted on Twitter, show the building was completely destroyed in the strike.

Israel does not normally acknowledge its airstrikes in Syria, at least not until much later. However, the IDF made a rare immediate admission of responsibility on Tuesday, after the Russian Defense Ministry identified Israeli F-16 jets as taking part in the attack, and said the Il-20 aerial observation platform vanished from radars during the strike.

Comment: Israeli Air Force Commander Amikan Norkin will head to Moscow to hand over the information on the Ilyushin Il-20 warplane crash in Syria, Israel's Defense Forces said on Wednesday.
"On Thursday morning, a delegation of Israel's Defense Forces headed by Major General Amikan Norkin, the Air Force Commander, will head to Moscow after the downing of a Russian plane by a Syrian missile on Monday night," says the communique circulated by the military.

"The Air Force commander and the delegation will present data on the incident in all aspects, including preliminary information and main conclusions of the investigation," it says.
...
Earlier on Wednesday, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that in Tuesday's phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Vladimir Putin gave his consent to the arrival of experts headed by the Israeli Air Force commander, who are to hand their data on the Il-20 crash to Moscow. Peskov has pointed out that the Russian president relies on the information provided by the Russian Defense Ministry, but then added that Israel's information will be also examined by Russian experts.
President Assad has shared his thoughts on the incident:
"I express my sincere condolences on behalf of the Syrian people in connection with the crash of the Russian Il-20 military aircraft in the Mediterranean Sea, which led to the death of Russian military heroes who performed the valiant task of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in the fight against terrorism in Syria," Assad said in a telegram to Putin as quoted by SANA.

"This sad incident is the result of the arrogance and reckless violence of Israel, which constantly uses the dirtiest methods to achieve its sinister goals and to carry out aggression in the region," Assad stressed.
He's right about that. Israel plays dirty; it always has.

The American 6th Fleet's public affairs officer, Cmdr. Kyle Raines, told Sputnik:
"We are aware of the reporting on the loss of a Russian military aircraft. Our ships stand ready to assist any nation when called upon to render assistance at sea, which is a fundamental element of responsible mariners."

Raines, however, did not say if the Russian Defense Ministry had requested the assistance of the US in relation to the incident.
