Russian Ministry of Defense: US might preemptively strike Russia and China with 'Star Wars' space weapons

The US may be plotting a preemptive strike on the nuclear arsenals of Russia and China, Russian military said, citing the revival of the 1980s 'Star Wars' program and ever-growing US "missile defense" in Europe as evidence.

The analysis of the "probable actions" of Washington shows that Americans are seeking to achieve strategic superiority through the so-called 'on-start interception' doctrine, Deputy Chief of the General Staff operative command Lieutenant General Viktor Poznikhir said Wednesday. Under such a plan, the US would seek to destroy the "overwhelming majority" of their adversaries' missiles while the munitions are still sitting in their silos.

Washington's intentions to create a space-based layer of the strike anti-missile systems to hit ballistic missiles at early flight stages are particularly concerning. Basically, it's revival of the 1980s concept of 'Star Wars,'" the official stated.

The militarization of space prompts fears that Washington might be seeking to try and attempt a preemptive strike on its adversaries - like Russia and China, Poznikhir said. Basically, it raises the same concerns as the sprawling US "missile defense" in Europe - Moscow has long suspected it can be easily tweaked to launch offensive weaponry instead of interceptor missiles.

Putin: Less red tape & better business environment Russia's best response to Western economic war

The most important task for Russia should be a change in the structure of its economy to ensure development for the country's future, said President Vladimir Putin at a meeting of the council of legislators in St. Petersburg.

According to Putin, that will help to quickly and effectively deal with all existing challenges.

"There can be only one effective response to all external constraints, which is less bureaucracy and creating conditions that are attractive for business development," said the Russian president.

Putin added that attracting investment is one of the major tools to resolve economic issues. It is also necessary to increase productivity, he said.

Comment: Putin is also directing the Russian Central Bank to increase its holdings of gold. It has purchased 56 tons of gold in the first 3 months of 2019 alone. Sanctions from the US have led Russia to reduce its dependence on the petrodollar and to diversify its foreign reserves. Were the anti-Russian sanctions meant to strengthen the Russian economy? That's what it's doing.

Trump to maintain legal battle against all Democratic committee subpoenas

trump
President Donald Trump vowed Wednesday to battle every subpoena lodged by House Democrats.

"We're fighting all the subpoenas," Trump told reporters outside the White House, en route to an event in Georgia on the opioid crisis.

In the past several months, Democratic committee leaders in the House have issued dozens of requests for information or cooperation from Trump, his administration and his associates.

Democrats are demanding testimony from high-ranking current and former White House officials, as well as years of Trump's financial records and the unredacted version of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia report.

New 2020 candidate Moulton on hypothetical Mars invasion: 'I would not build a wall'

Seth Moulton

Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.), who has launched a 2020 campaign for president, on Monday responded to a question about a hypothetical alien invasion with a dig at President Trump's immigration policies.

"I would not build a wall between here and Mars," Moulton said on BuzzFeed News's "AM to DM" the same day he announced his run for the White House. "I would not do that."

"No, you got to start - and this is serious, guys - you got to start with diplomacy," he continued. "You always have to start with diplomacy."

Moulton backed his diplomacy-first approach by quoting former Defense Secretary James Mattis, who served as a general when Moulton was in the Marines.

Comment: The democrat contenders just keep piling on. It's almost as the Democratic Party is intentionally flooding the primaries with bone-head candidates who have no real platform in order to give superdelegates the power to chose their favored candidate. US spy plane spotted snooping near Russian maritime border in Black Sea, again

Wednesday's flight was the third time a US recon aircraft was spotted near Russia's southern borders in less than 24 hours.

A US Air Force Boeing RC-135V large reconnaissance aircraft based in Crete, Greece made its way into the Black Sea this morning, coasting along the Russian maritime border in the Krasnodar region before making its way around the Crimean peninsula, online aircraft monitoring resource PlaneRadar has reported, citing the plane's transponder data.

Prior to making its way to the Russian maritime border, the aircraft was joined by a Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker for refueling in the southwestern Black Sea.

The plane was the third US aircraft to be spotted carrying out reconnaissance operations around southern Russia in less than a day's time. On Tuesday afternoon, a USAF RQ-4B-40 Global Hawk took off from a base in Sicily, Italy, flying near Russia's borders in Crimea, Krasnodar, and eastern Ukraine's Donbass region.

Comment: Russia recently allowed the US a supervised flyover of their territory, so are these costly flights really necessary? One would think they're trying to incite some kind of reaction, just like they're doing with with China in the South China Sea:

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he will name a settlement in the Golan Heights after Donald Trump, in a show of gratitude for the US president's decision to recognize the region as Israeli territory.

"In honor of President Trump, who recognized Israel's sovereignty over the Golan, [Israel] will soon call for a settlement in the Golan Heights in his name. Happy holiday!" a message posted from Netanyahu's Twitter account said on Tuesday.

Trump announced he was recognizing the Golan Heights as being part of Israel late last month, in the run up to Israel's election in April.

Time is running out for the UK's fracking industry

Cuadrilla
© BloombergA worker at a site operated by Cuadrilla near Blackpool, UK. This may be the last government prepared even to support shale gas drilling
You have to have a scintilla of sympathy for the shale gas industry. It cannot be easy winning round a sceptical populace when you routinely have to drop the phrase "Richter scale" into public statements. But at least the frackers have been able to count on the support of the British government.

Or at least they thought they could. Of late, even business-minded ministers seem rather lukewarm. The industry is being throttled by regulations which ministers celebrate as the "toughest in the world", even as insiders admit that the reasons for not easing the rules are more political than scientific.

In other circumstances this might not matter, but the UK's shale experiment is running out of friends and out of road. With the Conservatives the only party not ideologically opposed to fracking and their enthusiasm dimming, the shale gas revolution is petering out. This may be the last government prepared even to support shale gas drilling - and its hold on power is pretty tenuous. Without a significant change of circumstance, time is almost up for fracking in Britain

Comment: One benefit of the Brexit farce may be that the establishment is forced to at least act as though they're working on behalf of the people in order to retain power. Because, whilst UK citizens may not be out in the streets every week like France's Yellow Vests, they are just as deeply unhappy with the direction their country is taking. It's also abundantly clear that there is no secure nor safe future for countries relying on fracking: Also check out SOTT radio's:

Bernie Sanders slams Netanyahu government as racist

US Senator Bernie Sanders (D-Vermont) on Tuesday called the Netanyahu government "racist," at a CNN Town Hall on Tuesday.

The comments were made in response to a question of how he would maintain the strong relations between the United States and Israel, despite his criticism. The senator claimed that he is not anti-Israel, and noted that some members of his family live there and that he volunteered on a kibbutz decades ago.

"As a young man I spent a number of months in Israel, [and] worked on a kibbutz for while. I have family in Israel. I am not anti-Israel. But the fact of the matter is that Netanyahu is a right-wing politician who I think is treating the Palestinian people extremely unfairly," he said.

Brexit and the uptick in violence in Northern Ireland: What's behind it?

Free Derry New IRA

The murder of journalist Lyra McKee and a spate of recent incidents of violence attributed to the 'New IRA', have sparked fresh worries about social unrest in Northern Ireland - but how great is the threat, and is Brexit to blame?

The dissident republican group calling itself the 'New IRA' has admitted responsibility for the killing of McKee last week during riots with police forces in the border city of Derry. The group was also blamed for a car bomb attack outside a Derry courthouse in January and six nights of rioting in the city last summer, the worst violence the region had seen in years.

Many have suggested that Brexit tensions are to blame for the recent uptick in violence, but that reasoning is "too simplistic," Irish journalist Danielle Ryan said. While Brexit has acted as somewhat of a "catalyst" for the recent unrest, "the tense political and social situation in the north far precedes Brexit - and the history is much too complicated to boil this new wave of violence down to any one factor," she said.

Comment: The connection between Brexit and Northern Ireland is this:

The 'Real IRA', like the Provisional IRA before it, is riddled with British agents. As agents do to Muslims these days, they encourage their targets to do extreme things. In this case, agitating Irish nationalists generates political currency for the UK government in its crucial bartering over the issue of the border through Ireland.

This is the British deep state threatening: "if we have to, we'll reimpose a hard border. So, Brussels and Dublin, don't think you can use Irish reunification as leverage against us..."
