SOTT Focus: NewsReal: Russiagate Redux - FBI Raided Trump to Keep Him Out of White House

The release this week of a farcically redacted affidavit that granted the FBI its warrant to conduct an unprecedented raid on a former president's residence on August 8th underscores what most have intuited - that the move was politically motivated to thwart or prevent Trump from running for president again in 2024.

Trump's lawyers in March this year filed a RICO 'anti-conspiracy' lawsuit against the Clinton campaign team, the Democratic Party, the Department of Justice and the FBI itself, seeking restitution for the false allegations of 'Russian collusion' made against him. Whatever information Trump has against them, the raid on Mar-a-Lago was probably intended to forcibly remove from him.

This week on NewsReal, Joe and Niall discuss the likelihood of this rank 'political policing' translating into electoral success for Trump, the unravelling 'science of Covid vaccines', European leaders' warnings of 'the end of the age of abundance', and the possibility that the nuclear stand-off at Zaporozhye may expose a secret US-Ukrainian nuclear weapons program...

China deploys ships and jets near Taiwan following provocative 'freedom of navigation' moves by the US

The US Navy has sent two warships through the Taiwan Strait on Sunday, in a significant first sail through since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's provocative visit to Taiwan early this month.

The guided-missile cruisers USS Antietam and USS Chancellorsville traversed "through waters where high seas freedoms of navigation and overflight apply in accordance with international law," according to the US 7th Fleet in Japan.

"These ships (are transiting) through a corridor in the strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal state. The ships' transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the United States' commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The United States military flies, sails, and operates anywhere international law allows," the 7th Fleet statement continued.

Comment: RT reports on China's response:
A sizable group of Chinese military vessels and aircraft has been detected around Taiwan amid heightened tensions in the region, the self-governed island's Defense Ministry claimed on Sunday.

According to the ministry, eight Chinese Navy vessels and 23 aircraft were detected in Taiwan's vicinity. Ten planes, it stated, "had flown on the east part of the median line of the Taiwan Strait," which in practice serves as an unofficial barrier between mainland China and the island.

The Taiwanese military added that local combat air patrol has been given relevant instructions, and that Beijing's activities are being closely monitored.

The apparent Chinese deployment comes a day after the US sent two warships to the Taiwan Strait, in what the Navy called a "routine" transit mission, meant to "demonstrate the United States' commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific."

Beijing responded by putting its military on high alert and signaling its readiness "to stop any provocations in a timely manner." Earlier, China also castigated the US, branding it "the destroyer of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait."

Tensions in the region have been running high since the controversial visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taipei in early August, which sent relations between Washington and Beijing into a tailspin and triggered a flurry of Chinese military activity in the area. At the time, Chinese Defense Ministry said it had conducted drills simulating a "blockade" of the island, as well as amphibious assaults and the striking of ground targets.

Beijing considers the self-governing island its own territory, and views visits by high-ranking US officials as attacks on its sovereignty and a violation of the 'One China' principle. The Taiwan Strait, which separates the self-governed island from mainland China, has been a source of military tension since 1949, when Chinese nationalists fled to the island after losing the Civil War to the Communists.

Diplomatic immunity, American-style: The rule of law has disappeared in the US

US Diplomatic Passport
© Blue Moon of Shanghai
In a recent podcast, Kevin Barrett stated that the rule of law has disappeared in the US. This is so obviously true to outsiders looking in, and is even more true of American official conduct abroad, but I find myself wondering about the extent to which Americans generally are aware of this and how it is perceived.

In days gone by, this lawlessness was usually deeply buried and obfuscated but today it seems there is no longer even a pretense of any rule of law. We see this most recently in the so-called "sanctions" the US so freely applies to countries and individuals, being no more than illegal rampaging and looting.

But there is another category that may not be as visible and yet is indicative of an extreme breakdown of the rule of law, this applying to the category of "diplomatic immunity", real or imagined, where the US government absolutely treads on a one-way street. This article is only a brief introduction with a few examples of hundreds that could be cited.

SOTT Focus: Nuclear Armageddon? The 'Realist' Fear About Russia-Ukraine Conflict Sparking Nuclear War is Actually Groundless

Howitzer

The US will not intervene directly, because it's not an existential crisis for Washington - it stands to lose little from Kiev's inevitable defeat.

Fears that the Ukraine conflict is now bogged down into some sort of stalemate which risks dangerous escalation from the parties involved in order to achieve victory are misplaced. There is only one victor in the Ukraine conflict, and that is Russia. Nothing can change this reality.

Renowned American intellectual John Mearsheimer has written an important article about the conflict, entitled: 'Playing with Fire in Ukraine: The Underappreciated Risks of Catastrophic Escalation'. The article paints a dark picture about both the nature of the war in Ukraine (prolonged stalemate) and probable outcome (decisive escalation by the parties involved to stave off defeat).

Mearsheimer's underpinning premises, however, are fundamentally flawed. Russia possesses the strategic initiative - militarily, politically, and economically - when it comes to the war in Ukraine and the larger proxy engagement with NATO. Moreover, neither the US nor NATO is in a position to escalate, decisively or otherwise, to thwart a Russian victory, and Russia has no need for any similar escalation on its part.

In short, the Ukraine conflict is over, and Russia has won. All that remains is a long and bloody mopping up.

Heavily redacted affidavit says 184 classified docs found at Trump residence

A redacted FBI affidavit used to convince a judge to approve a search warrant for former President Trump's Florida home noted that authorities found 184 classified documents in their initial review of recovered boxes in an effort that began just a few months after he left office.

Authorities' concern that Trump may have additional national security information at his private residence was spurred by a review of the 15 boxes recovered by the National Archives in January.

The affidavit indicates that among the 184 documents were 25 that contained top secret information, including those gained from "clandestine human sources," information prohibited from being shared with foreign governments, and information obtained by monitoring "foreign communications signals."

The 28-page affidavit contains numerous redactions but indicates authorities believed "evidence, contraband, fruits of crime, or other items illegally possessed" would be found at Mar-a-Lago.

Entirely redacted is a provision explaining why the government believed additional "classified [national defense information]" would be found on the premises.

Hungary approves construction of two Russian-built nuclear reactors

Paks Nuclear

Hungary has announced that the €12.5bn (£10.6bn) construction of two nuclear reactors by Russia's Rosatom will begin in the coming weeks after regulators approved the project.

The war in Ukraine has not deterred Hungary's interest in the project to add to the four reactors already operating at the Paks plant outside Budapest.

The fact it is moving forward is another indication of the close ties between Hungary's nationalist prime minister, Viktor Orbán, and the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.

"This is a big step, an important milestone," the Hungarian foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, said on Facebook after the national regulator issued a permit on Thursday after numerous delays. "We can now move from planning stage to construction. You'll see that at the Paks site in the coming weeks."

He added it was "realistic" the reactors could enter service by 2030.

The real cost of Ukraine's de-Russification

russia culture ban ukraine flag violin
The country's insistence on its right to exist as separate from Russia is understandable, but expunging Russian cultural and linguistic influence risks future trouble.

Wars transform nations and people — leaving them, whether victorious or vanquished, "all changed, changed utterly," as Irish writer W.B. Yeats noted.

Yeats was writing about the armed insurrection against British rule in Ireland during April 1916. The uprising had lasted just six days, but Ireland would never be the same.

Ukraine's ongoing epic defense of its national identity, territorial integrity and sovereignty has already lasted six months, and there is no end in sight. It has left widespread devastation, with towns and buildings wrecked, families traumatized and uprooted, livelihoods upended and lives lost and mourned.

Comment: Ukraine is not going to win this war and it will be Russia deciding how the peace will be won. Ukraine is fortunate they will be subject to a rational, dispassionate regime that will seek a just rapprochement which will see citizens regain normal life, while those deserving will be punished.

Bloomberg says Russia can afford 'complete halt' in gas supplies to EU

The spike in global energy prices works entirely in Moscow's favour, analysts say

Russia can shut down its natural gas exports to the EU entirely for more than a year, without inflicting significant damage on the national economy, Bloomberg has reported, citing strategists at Capital Economics.

In light of the current price situation, Russia's "balance of payments is in such a strong position that, if oil prices and oil exports remain at current levels, Russia could keep gas exports to Europe at 20% of normal levels for at least three years," analysts at the consultancy said in a note seen by the agency.

Comment: Whether or not the elites like it, Russia's command of vast natural resources puts it in the catbird seat with respect to the New World Order. This, as much as anything else, has fueled the decades-long hostilities against Russia.

'Get out! F**k you!': Watch Macron get heckled by bustling crowd on visit to Algeria as he calls for new pact between nations

macron algeria 2022
Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, faced a cold reaction from the crowd during his visit to Algeria this week. In a viral video, posted on August 27th, the president can be seen in the city of Oran.

Macron can be seen waving to the people who gathered in downtown Oran and saying "thank you!" before getting into his car.

Comment: Judging by the look on his face in the video, he seems to know he wasn't being welcomed.

However, the crowd did not react cordially: according to the FranceInfo network, some people shouted "get out!", "How is Brigitte?", "fu** you!" and "France eats us," while the crowd chanted "one two three, long live Algeria!"

The visit comes after an escalation of tensions between Paris and Algeria last year, which was caused by Macron's suggestion that the African nation did not exist before French colonization. He also said there would be "no repentance nor apologies" for French rule over Algeria.

Comment: Also today:

So, as you can see, it's not just in Algeria Macron isn't welcome, because also in France, just last year, Macron got a slap from a constituent:

Canada to return turbines for Russian gas

Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said on Wednesday that her government will ship the five turbines from Montreal back to Germany, despite demands from ethnic Ukrainians and Kiev's ambassador in Ottawa to hold onto them. Joly revealed that the decision was made after a request from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is currently visiting Canada.

"That was the decision that we took," Joly said in an interview with the state broadcaster CBC. "That's exactly what Germany asked us."

"Canada doesn't want to give any form of excuse to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin to continue to weaponize his flow of energy to Europe," Joly told CBC's Hannah Thibedeau.
