Society's Child
The 13 year-old school children from the town of Skelleftea in the north east of Sweden, were reportedly listening to an audio book about a girl who was planning to commit suicide.
After listening to the harrowing story, which was part of lesson looking at mental health issues, their teacher asked them to write a letter to the girl's mother, to explain to her that the child's thoughts about suicide were not the parent's fault.
However, to make the task 'easier,' their teacher suggested that when writing the fictional letter, they should instead think about their own mother's, the angry parents claimed.
"We are several parents who became very upset when we heard about this," one parent told Swedish broadcaster SVT.
"I am completely aghast," and "it feels very unpleasant," others added.
However, the school's administration claims that parents completely misunderstood the reasoning behind assignment, adding that they fully support the teacher who gave the children the task.
"It's an existing assignment in a renowned text book that the teacher has used," education head Jan Soderstrom told SVT. "It is very sad that it is being perceived this way," he added.
He added that the school will write a letter (not suicidal) to children's parents, which will explain the reasoning behind the controversial assignment in more detail.

Given the astronomical rate of suicide in Sweden, (for whatever reason - months of winter darkness, alcoholism, materialism, who knows,) this school "exercise" is insane.
Just imagine if a madrassah in Sweden asked its Muslim students to write an essay describing how they would decapitate Christian Swedes, slowly, with a butcher's knife, describing the screams, the blood, etc. etc. Would the educational authorities think that was an OK assignment?
I am stunned and baffled at the utter stupidity of the so-called "teachers" in this so called "school." What planet are they living on? They should all be fired on the spot and made to wash out bedpans in the local old age home.
I have a hard time dreaming up any scenario where this would remotely make sense. Poor children, if I were one of those parents, I would be irate. What kind of text book is that?
At that age, most haven't yet learnt the true meaning & weight of death much less contemplated their own,via their own efforts, with a letter to mum no less?
Its fudged up man...
If we put the 'renowned authority' (in this instance) on the head of a pin, and then stick him (or her) with the other end, we will have solved this current educational/scholastic Swedish problem.
Quite nicely.

pus, vomit, piss, shit and other foul necessities (at the right time)
That sums up many education systems. Teach what's in the books and don't ask any questions. Them kids got some learning to do.
Comment: This is so demented! Most 13-year-olds don't have the emotional or mental maturity to even consider such mental health issues. Living in this world AND being a teenager is traumatic enough. Why add suicide to the burden?
