Geologists identify rare meteorite impact site in Dakota County

An area around Inver Grove Heights, Minn., is the site of an ancient meteorite crash, according to recent analysis by the Minnesota Geological Survey.

The discovery came as scientists were updating geologic maps of Dakota County. They identified anomalies in the rock record — certain layers appeared out of order or irregularly sized. This led to further examination and the identification of small grains of shocked quartz, which is known to be produced only by the extreme shock and compression of a meteorite impact or nuclear explosion.

"It's really exciting and new," geologist Julia Steenberg told MPR News host Cathy Wurzer. Steenberg and her colleagues are hoping to do more research to better understand the age of the impact and the size of the meteorite involved.

Globally, known meteorite impact sites are exceptionally rare. This is the first identified in Minnesota and one of fewer than 200 in the world.

Loud mysterious boom has residents of south-west Sydney, Australia scratching their heads

Mystery boom - stock
Experts are baffled by reports of an explosion heard across south-west Sydney with no identified sources nor any indication as to where it came from.

Authorities received multiple reports from residents saying they heard an "explosion" on Saturday night, but found no evidence of an explosion.

Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW police responded to the calls, but said they found nothing, not even a fire, to indicate an explosion had taken place.

Mystery surrounds the incident, with reports the sound was heard across Marrickville, Roselands, Bardwell Park, Campsie and Belmore.

Residents reported windows shaking, and that the sound was something like an explosion or a backfiring car, but with no visual indicators.

A bright meteor was spotted across the night skies of the Greater Antilles on Friday night. Those who spotted it say the brilliant meteor appeared as a "huge green ball with a long tail."

The meteor was visible from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Cuba at approximately 8:02 PM Friday 7th May 2021.

According to the Caribbean Astronomy Society (SAC), "It was a space rock of metallic content friction with our atmosphere."

New Comet C/2021 E3 (ZTF)

CBET xxxx & MPEC 2021-J71 , issued on 2021, May 06, announce the discovery of an apparently asteroidal object (magnitude ~19.5) on CCD images taken on March 09.5 UT with the 1.2-m Schmidt telescope at Palomar in the course of the "Zwicky Transient Facility" (ZTF) search program. This object has been found to show cometary appearance by CCD astrometrists elsewhere. The new comet has been designated C/2021 E3 (ZTF).

Stacking of 14 unfiltered exposures, 120 seconds each, obtained remotely on 2021, March 19.2 from Z08 (Telescope Live, Oria) through a 0.7 m f/8 Ritchey Chretien + CCD, shows that this object is a comet with a compact coma about 7" in diameter (Observers E. Guido, M. Rocchetto, E. Bryssinck, M. Fulle, G. Milani, C. Nassef, G. Savini, A. Valvasori).

A huge, glowing fireball lights up the sky over Japan

fireball
A glowing object crossing the sky was captured on Monday night over the Fukuoka and Nagasaki prefectures in Japan. The phenomenon was captured on video by cameras in the area and seen by several witnesses who described it as a ball of light, pick up the chain NHK.

Satoshi Imamura, an expert in space issues, dispelled doubts about the nature of the object and explained that it was a bright shooting star known as a fireball or bolide. The intense luminosity occurs when dust and asteroid fragments in outer space enter the atmosphere and burn.

Meteor fireball spotted on deputy's dashcam in Collier County, Florida

fireball
A Collier County deputy captured a unique phenomenon on her dashcam while out on patrol this week.

Cpl. Nicole Medenwald saw a meteor, and rather than savor the memory, she got to review the proof!

The Collier County Sheriff's Office said she had just come from conducting a traffic stop. She repositioned her patrol car to face North 15th Street to watch for cars.

"I saw a green light and then it lit up the sky," Cpl. Medenwald said. "It reminded me of lightning at night the way the sky lit up."

Cpl. Medenwald said she's seen meteors before but has never seen one break the atmosphere and light up the sky.

Lyrid fireball over the Mediterranean (April 23)

fireball
This bright Lyrid meteor was recorded over Spain on 2021 April 23 at 6:03 local time (equivalent to 4:03 universal time). It overflew the Mediterranean Sea. The bolide was generated by a fragment (a meteoroid) from Comet C/1861 G1 (Comet Thatcher) that hit the atmosphere at about 165,000 km/h. It began at an altitude of about 114 km over the Mediterranean Sea, and ended at a height of around 60 km, after traveling about 53 km in the Earth's atmosphere.

The event was recorded in the framework of the SMART project, operated by the Southwestern Europe Meteor Network (SWEMN), from the meteor-observing stations located at La Hita (Toledo), Calar Alto (Almería), Sierra Nevada (Granada), La Sagra (Granada), and Sevilla.
