Bering Sea storm to bring hurricane force winds to Southcentral Alaska

Bering Sea storm
© NOAA/NWSSatellite imagery shows the Bering Sea storm system forecast to cause high surf in the Kuskokwim Delta on Monday and high winds and flooding in Southcentral Alaska on Tuesday.
Parts of Southcentral Alaska could see hurricane-force wind gusts of up to 100 mph and heavy rain starting Tuesday night from a Bering Sea storm system, the National Weather Service reported Monday.

The Weather Service's Anchorage website showed areas affected by a series of high wind warnings, in effect from Tuesday evening into Wednesday, ranging from Seward and the eastern Kenai Peninsula to Prince William Sound. The area around Cordova remained under a wind watch. Most of those areas can expect winds of 40 to 55 mph, with gusts of 75 to 90 mph.

The warning also includes the lower Anchorage Hillside and Eagle River, with winds of 30 to 45 mph and gusts to 65 mph. Along Turnagain Arm and higher elevations, wind speeds of 50 to 65 mph are forecast, along with gusts from 85 to 100 mph.

"Confidence remains high for this storm to produce hurricane force winds along Turnagain Arm, much of the Anchorage area and Portage Valley," meteorologists wrote in an afternoon forecast discussion, though they noted that when and just how hard the winds would hit Anchorage was less certain.

Earlier in the day, forecasters said this week's storm appears to be stronger than the one that moved through Southcentral Alaska earlier this month, which took down trees and knocked out power for thousands of customers from Willow to Homer.

Law enforcement agencies are advising that Dane County motorists use caution during rush hour as water recedes from a late afternoon deluge Monday.

Madison police said a severe thunderstorm that passed through the metro area around 4 p.m. downed power lines and caused flash flooding as storm drains failed to keep up in some areas.

Police and trained weather spotters reported hail ranging from 1 to 2 inches across the Madison area. The largest hail was spotted in Middleton, according to reports published on the National Weather Service's website for its Sullivan office.

Most of the roadway flooding was concentrated on the city's South and West sides, said Sgt. Eugene Woehrly.

The Madison Fire Department reported that three cars attempted to drive through flood waters at the intersection of University Avenue at Rose Place and firefighters assisted one victim out of her passenger window and onto dry land.

Boy killed by lightning in Cambodia; deaths increase to 100 for the year so far

lIGHTNING
Lightning killed a nine-year-old boy on Friday afternoon in Pursat province's Phnom Kravang district, according to police, with authorities continuing to appeal to people to stay safe during storms.

Deputy district police chief Chet Sambath said yesterday that the boy had been carrying a pot to his home's water container when the lightning struck him dead, cracking the water container.

"The boy died before he could drink the water. We are really sorry about this accident caused by nature," he said, adding that there had not been many lightning strikes in his district this year.

Mr. Sambath said local authorities often educate people and make broadcasts about how to stay safe during electrical storms, including such advice as staying inside your home, not staying under a big tree and not using your phone when it is raining.

Keo Vy, a spokesman for the National Committee for Disaster Management, said last month that 139 incidents of lightning had happened in the past eight months, killing nearly 100 people and injuring 101, an increase over the same period last year when 64 people were killed and 58 were injured.

Mr. Vy added that 80 cows had also died from lightning during the past eight months.
