The Indian Air Force, the army, and other rescue teams are conducting relief operations.
Extremely heavy rains lashed several parts of Tamil Nadu over the past 24 hours, inundating vast swathes in at least four southern districts, including Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi, where villages and towns resembled rivers, prompting authorities to shift at least 7,500 people marooned in residential colonies to relief camps, officials said.

At least four people were killed in rain-related incidents on Monday, officials said and added that details regarding the incidents have been sought from local authorities.

Intense rainfall and heavy inundation have wreaked havoc in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Tenkasi districts in southern Tamil Nadu, with several parts witnessing their highest-ever downpour in a day. Kayalpattinam in Thoothukudi registered 96 cm rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Monday, according to the Met department.

Comment: Update December 22

REUTERS reports:
At least 31 people were killed in floods and heavy rain in India's southern state of Tamil Nadu this week, a top federal minister said on Friday, as rescuers struggled to reach scores still stranded in high waters.

Heavy rains have paralyzed several districts of the state, inundating entire neighborhoods, roads and railway tracks, days after a cyclone hit India's south-eastern coast, causing widespread damage.

"The (toll) number could change," federal Finance Minister Nirmala Sithraman told reporters, adding that more than 40,000 people have been rescued so far and efforts are underway to reach those still stranded.

The state is one of the major electronics and manufacturing hubs in India. Some southern neighborhoods remained waterlogged on Friday.

"We're struggling to get tractors and boats with food and essentials through water in the worst-affected areas," said M. Balamurugan, who along with other volunteers have been distributing foods and essentials.

Tamil Nadu recorded over 64 mm of rainfall this week, more than triple the 20 mm that would be normal at this time of year, the weather department said, predicting more rainfall in parts of the state over the next five days.

For some the floods are reminiscent of rains eight years ago in state capital Chennai that killed 290 people and inundated large swathes of the city.

Widespread flooding spreads misery across Maine - 500,000 customers without power

mmmmmm
The Crooked River knocked Eric Ruby down Wednesday afternoon as he tried to return to his house and save a generator and other equipment from the rushing waters that flooded several homes at the end of Hancock Road in Casco.

Wearing camouflage bib waders, Ruby's voice wavered as he described the frustration and anxiety of dealing with flooding that has affected many homes in low-lying areas across Maine after Monday's storm. He's also one of nearly 500,000 customers who have lost power at some point during the last three days, and he doesn't expect to get it back anytime soon.

"I'm so screwed," he said, his eyes red from crying. "Everything I have is floating away."

Ruby, 36, and his neighbors found slight hope in seeing the river recede a few inches Wednesday afternoon, in keeping with what experts saw happening around the state.

Comment: Severe flooding was also apparent across other states in New England:

90 pct of Mongolian territory covered by heavy snow

nnnnnn
Around 90 percent of the Mongolian territory has been covered with snow of up to 38 cm thick, increasing the risk of the extreme wintry weather known as "dzud," the country's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said Monday.

Dzud is a Mongolian term to describe a severely cold winter when a large number of livestock die because the ground is frozen or covered with snow.

Currently, at least 41 soums (administrative subdivisions) of 11 provinces of the country are experiencing dzud, NEMA said in a statement, adding that 48 soums of 11 provinces are suffering from near-dzud conditions.

Meanwhile, since the beginning of last week, a strong cold front originated in Siberia, Russia, has been sweeping across extensive areas of Mongolia, causing temperature drops and bringing strong winds and blizzards.

Heavy snow and blizzards are also expected to hit large parts of the country this week, said the weather monitoring agency.

At least four people are dead after a powerful storm brought dangerous flooding and travel disruptions across the East Coast and knocked out power to more than 620,000 homes and businesses in the Northeast, which faces cold temperatures and concentrated snowfall on Tuesday.

The storm system carved a chaotic path up the East Coast, leaving a man in Pennsylvania and a woman in South Carolina - both in their 70s - dead after their vehicles were submerged in high water, local officials reported. Two other deaths were reported in Maine and Massachusetts.

As the storm walloped the Northeast Monday, it unleashed 2-4 inches of rainfall across the region within a 24-hour period. The heavy rainfall triggered flooding that engulfed cars, trapped drivers on inundated roadways in New Jersey and Connecticut, and prompted water rescues in New Hampshire and Maine.

Best of the Web: 'Unprecedented' ice mass gain over Antarctic sheet between 2021 & 2022, outpaced mass loss

Antarctic ice gain

Comment: The information below is the abstract from a scientific paper published November 4th 2023 that has yet to receive much, if any, mainstream coverage - unsurprisingly - however the conclusion of their findings are stated fairly clearly.

Abstract and Figures

The Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) is susceptible to global climate change, and its mass loss has been 92 ± 18 Gt/yr between 1992 and 2020. Given the current intensive global warming, we investigate the AIS mass changes from January 2003 to December 2022, using the newly released satellite gravimetry and atmospheric datasets.

The results show that the continuous mass loss in the AIS between 2003 and 2020 was 141.8 ± 55.6 Gt/yr. However, the AIS showed a record-breaking mass gain of 129.7 ± 69.6 Gt/yr between 2021 and 2022. During this period, the mass gain over the East AIS and Antarctic Peninsula was unprecedented within the past two decades, and it outpaced the mass loss in the Amundsen sector of the West AIS from 2003 to 2022. Basin-scale analysis shows that the mass gain mainly occurred over Wilhelm II Land, Queen Mary Land, Wilkes Land, and the Antarctic Peninsula due to anomalously enhanced precipitation.

Comment: This seems to be further evidence showing that the apparent brief period of warming that our planet underwent in recent decades is fast being replaced with significant global cooling.

It also seems to support research showing that, whilst increased undersea volcanic and geothermal activity has led to a reduction of ice in some regions, it's being countered by the increasingly extreme cold temperatures from above: And check out SOTT radio's:

Blizzards swept across swathes of Russia on Friday, carpeting Moscow in one of the biggest snow falls in decades and sowing chaos on major roads where truck drivers battled with more than 20 centimetres of snow and strong winds.

A cyclone brought more than a day of constant blizzards to the Russian capital in what could be one of the strongest snow storms to hit Moscow in 60 years, according to meteorologists.

More than one fifth of the average snow fall for December was recorded over just 24 hours at metrological stations across Moscow where streets were blanketed in snow and motorists struggled to get their cars out of parking spaces.

Tropical Cyclone Jasper dumps 2 feet (624mm) of rain in 24 hours in North Queensland, Australia - 2nd heaviest daily rainfall on record for country

mmmmmm
Major flooding is occurring along Queensland's North Tropical Coast and Tablelands this morning after Tropical Cyclone Jasper dropped more than half a metre of rain in the last 24 hours.

Jasper made landfall as a category two tropical cyclone late on Wednesday, crossing the coast between Port Douglas and Cooktown in the vicinity of Wajul Wajul.

As Jasper approached and crossed the coast, bands of heavy rain and thunderstorms were driven over Qld's North Tropical Coast and Tablelands in a persistent stream of moisture-laden winds to the south of the cyclone's core.

A rain gauge at Yandill in the Daintree region picked up 624 mm of rain during the 24 hours to 9am on Thursday. This included two separate periods of very intense rain, with 3-hour rain rates reaching 148 mm between midnight and 3am, and 130 mm between 6 and 9am. If valid, Yandill's 624 mm of rain during the 24 hours to 9am on Thursday is Australia's 2nd heaviest daily rainfall on record.
