A couple from Michigan and a man from Chicago were killed in a massive pileup on a snowy interstate in northwestern Indiana, authorities said Friday, as crews cleaned up after the 40-plus-vehicle wreck.

More than 20 people were injured, including one critically, in the crush of semitrailers and mangled passenger vehicles Thursday afternoon on the eastbound stretch of Interstate 94 connecting Chicago with Detroit. At least one person was trapped in a vehicle for hours before authorities could come to the rescue, Indiana State Police said.

Snow and whiteout conditions were contributing factors, police said. A band of heavy lake-effect snow was dropping up to 2 inches of snow per hour with visibility at a quarter-mile or less at the time of the wreck, National Weather Service meteorologist Evan Bentley said. The wreck happened near Michigan City, about 60 miles from Chicago.

Storm buries Northeast; 16 inches of snow in New Jersey

A swirling storm clobbered parts of the mid-Atlantic and the urban Northeast on Tuesday, dumping nearly a foot and a half of snow, grounding thousands of flights, closing government offices in the nation's capital and making a mess of the evening commute.

The storm stretched 1,000 miles between Kentucky and Massachusetts but hit especially hard along the heavily populated Interstate 95 corridor between Philadelphia and Boston, creating perilous rides home for millions of motorists.

The National Weather Service said Manalapan, N.J., got 16 inches of snow and Philadelphia's airport saw 13.5. It said parts of New York City had 11 inches.

The snow came down harder and faster than many people expected. A blizzard warning was posted for parts of Massachusetts, including Cape Cod.

Flood, landslide in central Java, Indonesia kill 13, displace 4,000

Image
Widespread floods and landslide caused by consecutive days of heavy downpours have wreaked havoc on Kudus district of Central Java, leaving 13 people dead and forcing 4,000 residents to evacuate, a local official said on Wednesday. Print

Five rivers have been bloated by torrential rain since Sunday and burst their banks, hence swamping several spots at the district, said P. Jumadi, head of the disaster agency of the district.

On Wednesday, some of the residents were still wading through 1.5-meter deep water to evacuation centers, many of which are placed in village administration offices, said Jumadi.

The downpours also incurred landslides in Menawan village of Gebog sub-district, seriously damaging two houses, said Jumadi.

"As many as 4,025 people are taking shelters in 20 evacuation centers," he told Xinhua over phone from the district.

International refiners rush to ship gasoil, diesel to freezing U.S.

Refiners in Asia, Europe and Russia are shipping around half a million tonnes of heating oil and diesel to the United States this month after bitterly cold weather sharply reduced oil stocks there.

At least a dozen tankers have been booked so far in January to ship gasoil and diesel to the U.S. East Coast, according to traders and shipping data.

The majority of the tankers, or around 300,000 tonnes of oil product, originated from the Baltic Sea and Black Sea.

One tanker, the 100,000-tonne Torm Valborg, was chartered by Reliance , which operates the world's biggest refining complex in western India.

Around three medium-range tankers were booked from Europe on the west-bound transatlantic route, traders said.

Also, around five cargoes of jet fuel heading from the Middle East and Asia to Europe were diverted to the United States in recent days, with several likely to discharge in Florida, traders said.

"U.S. East Coast heating oil stocks are low at the commercial level and are being reduced at the consumer level. That market should remain tight and can't get much incremental supply from the U.S. Gulf due to the Jones Act restricting transport between the two regions by vessel," said Olivier Jakob, analyst at Zug, Switzerland-based Petromatrix.

Snowstorm to Hit Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York on Tuesday, bitter cold to follow

snow forecast

Along the leading edge of the invading polar blast, accumulating snow will spread from the Midwest to the East Coast on Tuesday.

The snow will come courtesy of yet another Alberta Clipper set to drop through the Dakotas and Ohio Valley on Monday through Monday night with accumulations on the order of a coating to 2 inches.

The snow will become heavier as it streaks across the mid-Atlantic on Tuesday, then makes a northeastward turn toward southern New England late in the day and evening.

Travel conditions will deteriorate with slippery roads and flight delays expected to unfold even in areas that avoid heavy snow. As colder air invades the storm, winds will increase and cause some blowing and drifting of the snow that has already fallen.

Des Moines, Iowa: Sudden snow causes two pileups involving more than 40 vehicles

As thousands of drivers and schoolchildren can tell you firsthand, Thursday's surprise snowfall created a near-standstill for Des Moines-area travel for hours.

At least 25 cars were involved in a pileup on Interstate Highway 80 near Waukee during the evening rush hour. Another 20-plus cars jammed U.S. Highway 169 between Adel and De Soto. Some people were without power for hours because roads laden with accidents kept crews from reaching the outage area.

And in Des Moines, at least one school bus was still taking students home after 9 p.m. because of poor road conditions.

"Those buses began their routes just as the worst of the storm was hitting the metro by surprise," district spokesman Phil Roeder said.

A bus that left Greenwood Elementary School at 4:30 p.m. was still en route to student houses at 9 p.m. Roeder said that he wasn't sure how long the route typically takes, but that students had always been home in time for dinner.

Another bus that left Windsor Elementary School at 4:30 p.m. didn't finish its route until 8:30.

Roeder said bus drivers remain in touch with dispatchers while on the road. Dispatchers then contact parents. Roeder said not every parent was contacted because of the unexpected conditions.

Severe storms, floods plague East U.S. coast

Wild weather is sweeping the country following last weeks deep freeze.

Over the weekend powerful storms roared down South.

In North Carolina, hurricane strength winds destroyed a condominium complex.

In Georgia, two girls had to be rescued after a tree fell on their home.

Meanwhile, a big thaw from Pennsylvania to Maine is causing major flooding concerns for millions.

In Vermont, roads have been closed and some residents are being forced to use sand bags.

In western New York, homes and yards looked like swimming pools due to massive flood waters. Crews had to use boats and even a bulldozer to rescue residents trapped by the rising water.

Forecasters say more flooding is expected in the coming days.

Floods hit South Philippines; 20 dead, 13 missing

Two days of heavy rains set off floods and landslides in the southeastern Philippines, leaving at least 20 people dead, 13 missing and thousands displaced, officials said Monday.

Most of the dead and missing came from floods and landslides that hit Compostella Valley and Davao Oriental provinces, said Maj. Reynaldo Balido, spokesman for the disaster-response agency.

A landslide Monday damaged five houses in Cagdianao municipality in Dinagat Island, off the northeastern coast of the main southern island of Mindanao, killing six residents including two boys aged 2 and 14, said police officer Elbert Ompoc.

Another man drowned in Agusan del Sur province's Prosperidad township, on Mindanao, and seven others were missing, according to the civil defense regional bureau.

The flooding, triggered by rains from a low pressure area, has affected 132,000 people from 10 provinces.
