Nearly a week after a south St. Louis woman reported falling into a sinkhole to the city, she's wondering why it's still there.

So she contacted Five on Your Side's Mike Rush.

Other than a pinky finger, 63-year-old June LaBarbera has gone all her life without a broken bone. Until now.

"The humerus bone goes up here... is broken from that collar bone up there," LaBarbera points out.

Her bone and her record were broken by a hole about a foot across and three feet deep that developed in her front yard at the curb on Odell Street.

A man sustained several injuries this morning when his Nissan Champ Bakkie fell into a sink hole on Voortrekker Road and Quality Street in Durban.

Shortly before 06:00 paramedics were dispatched to the incident. When they arrived on the scene they found the bakkie with only its rear on the tarmac. Bystanders pointed paramedics into the direction of where a man was standing. The driver of the vehicle managed to get out of his vehicle before paramedics arrived on the scene.

It is understood that the man was on his way to work when his vehicle fell into the hole. According to bystanders on the scene the sink hole developed late yesterday afternoon and was not properly cordoned off. It appeared as if it filled with water during the night making it difficult to see.

A large sinkhole appeared in Essenwood and St Thomas roads in Durban late on Thursday afternoon, forcing authorities to close the roads.

Durban Rescue Care operations director Garrith Jamieson said paramedics were called to a "road collapse" on Thursday.

"Previously paramedics have attended to the same intersection for the same incident where a vehicle actually fell into the hole," said Jamieson."Fortunately this time no vehicle was involved. The road was quickly cordoned off and all the necessary authorities are on the scene to try and fix the situation."

"Paramedics arrived at the scene and found that the people managed to escape from the wreckage of their vehicle. After medics treated them at the scene, they transported the injured to a local hospital for the care that they required," he said.

Sinkhole opens up in the middle of Dublin's Dame Street

Sinkhole in Dublin.
A sinkhole has opened up on Dublin's Dame Street, causing traffic delays in the centre of the city.

The hole is around three feet in diameter and has been cordoned off by Garda at the scene.

It is expected to be covered later this evening and an investigation into what caused it will begin tomorrow.

An engineer at the scene said that it could have been caused by water damage to the foundations beneath the road surface.

Westbound traffic on Dame Street is currently suspended between George Street and Parliament Street and cars are being advised to use alternative routes.

Comment: Apparently the hole may have exposed a tunnel through which 19th century politicians would sneak in and out of a brothel! Nowadays, of course, they don't bother going to such lengths to hide their predilections.

Crews began repairs at Oxford Avenue and West 236th Street Monday. They say the massive hole started as a water main break late last week.

The Department of Environmental Protection told News 12 that the hole was repaired yesterday afternoon. However, the spot was still cordoned off on Tuesday creating a tricky four-way intersection for drivers.

Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz's office looked more into the cause of the hole, and says the DEP inspectors determined that there were leaks to the 12-inch cast iron water main running underneath the street.

A sinkhole has been covered alongside the W.D. Mansfield Memorial Bridge underpass carrying West Fifth Avenue traffic from McKeesport onto Monongahela Avenue in Glassport.

But it's uncertain who's responsible for its maintenance, three days after a man was injured falling into the sinkhole as it opened up under him.

"That is not the department's roadway," PennDOT District 11 spokesman Steve Cowan said. "My documents do not show who is the owner of the road, but I would think it would either be the municipality or the county."
