Deadly flash floods strike Praia, Cape Verde

At least one person died after heavy rainfall brought flooding to the island of Santiago in Cape Verde on 12 September.

Flooding hit the country's capital, Praia, as well as other parts of Santiago. Several major roads were blocked, and bridges, buildings and cars damaged. Damage to farmland was also reported. One person, believed to be a young child, died after being swept away by flood waters in Praia. The government reported damage in several districts of the city, including Achada Mato, Jamaica, São Paulo and Fonton. The city recorded around 80mm of rain in 24 hours to 12 September.

At least 4 dead, 2,000 displaced after floods hit 4 provinces of Indonesia

At least 4 people have died and over 2,000 displaced after flooding in several provinces of Indonesia over the last few days.

According to Indonesia's National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB), flooding has affected the provinces of Gorontalo, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan and North Sumatra over the last few days.

Three people died and one is still missing after flash floods in Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo. Flooding struck after heavy rainfall from 07 September. Around 1,500 people have been displaced from their homes, according to BNPB.

Prolonged flood will push up vegetable prices in Bangladesh further - 260,000 hectares of farmland damaged

The lengthy floods have severely been affecting early winter crop farming in many Bangladesh districts. This is causing fears of further hike in prices of vegetables including onions. Although the water has started receding in 37 flood-stricken districts, many crop lands are still under waist-deep water.

Parts of Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Pabna, Natore, Sirajganj, Manikganj, Rajbari, Munshiganj, Faridpur, Madaripur, Shariatpur and Dhaka districts still have flood water, according to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE). DAE data showed a total of 260,000 hectares of land have been damaged totally by the more than two-month long flood from June 26 to August 31.

At least 6 people have died in floods after days of heavy rainfall in Tunisia.

Heavy rainfall began around 05 September when Kairouan, capital of the Kairouan Governorate in the north of the country, recorded 89mm of rain in 24 hours. Monastir recorded 47.8 mm of rain, Mahdia 44.4 mm and Sidi Bouzid 58 mm during the same period. Mahdia recorded more than 40mm of rain in 24 hours in 4 separate days between 05 and 11 September. Institut national de la météorologie-Tunisie issued wanings for further heavy rainfall on 13 September.

Flooding and related fatalities were reported in the governorates of Monastir, Jendouba, Mahdia, Sidi Bouzid and Tunis, according to the country's Civil Protection Agency. Floods struck several districts of the capital, Tunis on 10 September. Some areas were under 1 metre of water, leaving roads impassable and buildings damaged.

Over 30 dead or missing after floods and landslides in Bahrabise, Nepal

Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) reports that over 30 people are dead or missing after landslides and flooding triggered by heavy rainfall in Bahrabise municipality, Sindhupalchok District, overnight 12 to 13 September 2020.

According to the latest reports, 11 people have lost their lives and 20 are still missing. Five people have been injured. NDRRMA said that 17 families have been affected and 11 houses buried or swept away.

Teams from the military and police have been deployed to carry out relief and rescue operations, which have been hampered by inclement weather.

Nepal's Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said the nearby weather station at Gumthang, Sindhupalchok District, recorded 77.6mm of rain on 12 September and 141.2 mm on 13 September.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Saturday updated data of human and financial losses caused by the rains and floods during the recent monsoon season, raising the death toll to more than 300, including over 100 children.

The NDMA said the countrywide death toll stood at 310 - 135 men, 107 children and 70 women. The report said that Sindh was worst affected province with 136 fatalities, followed by 116 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 16 in Punjab, 21 in Balochistan, 12 in Azad Kashmir and 11 in Gilgit-Baltistan.

The NDMA said that 239 people - 6 women and 142 men and 41 children - were injured in the rain-related incidents, while 78,521 houses were destroyed and another 139,102 were damaged. Rains also damaged 13 roads, 10 bridges, 3 hotels, 3 shops, 5 mosques and 7 powerhouses.

Around 50 feared dead in DR Congo gold mine collapse after heavy rains flood nearby river

About 50 people are feared dead after a gold mine collapsed in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo following torrential rain, local authorities said Saturday.

The accident in the makeshift mine occurred on Friday in the town of Kamituga, in South Kivu province.

Provincial governor Theo Ngwabidje Kasi deplored "the tragic deaths of 50 people, most of them young".

However, Kamituga mayor Alexandre Bundya said "we are not yet sure of the exact number" of victims. A local resident who was at the scene, Jean Nondo, told AFP that "according to witnesses, there are more than 50 dead. There is only one survivor."

He said a river close to the mine had flooded after torrential rain.
