Pet dog chases off bear to save Japan boy from attack

A placid pet dog was being hailed a hero after saving a five-year-old boy from a mauling by a wild bear in northern Japan, police and media said Tuesday.

The dog, a six-year-old shiba inu, took on the metre-high (three-feet) bear after it attacked the young boy during a riverside walk with his great-grandfather.

The dog barked "unusually loud" and chased off the animal on Saturday evening in Odate, some 550 kilometres (340 miles) north of Tokyo, a local police spokesman said.

"The boy suffered slight bruises and was taken to hospital but he was released on the same day," the spokesman said.

The boy s 80-year-old great-grandfather, who was a short distance away near his car, raised the alarm.

Local media identified the dog as a six-year-old bitch named "Mego" ("Cute").

Camel escapes from cage and kills owner of wildlife sanctuary

The American owner of a Mexican wildlife center was killed by a camel after the animal escaped its pen and attacked him.

Richard Mileski was walking through Tulum Monkey Sanctuary in Tulum on Tuesday when the camel escaped. The animal dragged Mileski to the ground and kicked, bit and trampled him before sitting on top of the 60-year-old.

One park employee was in another part of the park when he heard Mileski scream, then rushed to the scene and attempted to beat the camel away with a stick. Despite employee efforts, Mileski died on the scene.

Following the incident, the camel was taken to Mexico's federal agency of environmental protection Profepa.

"We had to tie a rope around the animal's neck and pull him with a pick-up truck to remove him," one employee said.

Rare deep sea dwelling beaked whale washes up on beach near Newcastle, Australia

Marine experts are examining a rare beaked whale that has washed up on a New South Wales beach.

The three to four-metre-long animal was found dead on Redhead Beach, south of Newcastle, this morning.

Marine experts have been called in to examine the whale and take specimens.

Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORCCA) president Ronny Ling said the find was extremely rare.

"It's a deep sea animal called a beaked whale," he said.

This bizarre-looking 'alien' creature was caught by a deep sea fisherman in Singapore.

Ong Han Boon, 54, was at his favourite fishing spot on the island of Sentosa where he cast his line with the hope of catching a fresh tasty treat for lunch.

As he settled down with a few cans of his favourite beer, he noticed a pull, but he never expected what came up out of the sea.

He said: "I spotted the line going up and down, and feeling a bit peckish I got quite excited as I hauled it in.

"But when I pulled it out of the water I was completely flummoxed by what I was looking at."

Body of hunter killed by bear located in Karachay-Cherkessia, Russia

A 41-year-old hunter from Kurjinovo got lost in the Petushinka forest yesterday. His body was found near Damkhurts (Urupsky District, Karachay-Cherkessia), the body of a bear with bullet holes was found a few steps away, Interfax-South reports.

According to preliminary studies, the man shot the bear but the bullet only injured the animal. The bleeding animal became enraged and killed the hunter, dying of the injury later.

Bear kills oil worker in the Tyumen region, Russia

The tragedy happened on an oil field at Ust-teguss in the Tyumen region. The worker had returned to a place of work to pick up his tools. At the same time from the forest nearby a bear approached. It attacked the man and dragged him into the woods.

As outlined by friends of the deceased electrician Igor Yarysheva, the 33-year-old male had returned to his workplace to pick up his forgotten tools. He had asked his friend to take him. He later went to a pylon, located 40 metres from the road and the parked auto. After a few minutes the driver had heard cries and a crash.

When he turned around, he saw a terrible picture. The bear had dragged the frightened Igor from the tower he had climbed up, hoping to escape. Screams came from other witnesses. The workers wanted to save their colleague by screaming and carrying on, trying to distract the bear but this did not achieve the desired result and the predator dragged Igor Yarysheva into the woods.

Dead sperm whale washes up on San Fernando shore, Philippines

A female sperm whale was spotted near the shore in San Fernando, La Union Monday morning where it died.

Residents said the sperm whale was sighted around 9 a.m. The whale died at around noon.

Authorities used 2 4x4 trucks to haul the whale's carcass to shore.

A local official said the whale measures about 10 meters and was covered with wounds. Authorities have yet to identify cause of death.

Man injured in bear attack in Srinagar, India

One person was injured in a attack by a wild animal in Braipathri Nagbal Pakharpora. A bear attacked and injured a person identified as Mohammad Rafique Hajam son of Mohammad Abdullah residence of Braipathri Nagbal jurisdiction of PP Pakherpora. The injured was shifted to SKIMS Soura Srinagar for treatment.

Man attacked and mauled by bear in Mizoram, India

A 50-year-old man was attacked and injured by a bear in a jungle near the Mizoram-Myanmar border in south Mizoram's Lunglei district, police said today.

The man was attacked by the bear inside the thick jungle protected by the local community when he was passing through it on Wednesday last, the police said.

He called up his relatives over phone after the attack and was taken home by volunteers from the village. He was admitted with multiple wounds, including on his face, to local health facility for treatment, the police added.

A man has been transported by air ambulance to hospital in Calgary after he was attacked by a grizzly bear near Fernie, B.C.

Officials with Alberta-based STARS air ambulance say they responded at around 9:23 a.m. MT Sunday to transport the man from an area about eight kilometres south of Fernie.
