A Chinese farmer had a lucky escape after a rare Siberian tiger hurled itself against the gate of his home, smashing it off its hinges.

In video footage, the growling tiger is seen running along a road outside the man's house in a village in the north-east of China.

The attack happened in Changtai village in Heilongjiang province in north-eastern China on Monday.

The farmer walks across a courtyard full of drying maize and into the street to see what is going on, but suddenly retreats as the tiger returns.

He manages to shut the metal gate but seconds later the tiger launches itself against the barrier, bursting it open.

The farmer escaped with his life but a short time before, another villager had been attacked by the tiger while feeding his cattle.

The human heart may have a hidden ability to repair itself

After severe heart failure, the ability of the heart to heal by forming new cells is very low. However, after receiving treatment with a supportive heart pump, the capacity of a damaged heart to repair itself with new muscle cells becomes significantly higher, even higher than in a healthy heart. This is according to a new study from Karolinska Institutet published in the journal Circulation.

The ability of the human heart to renew itself by regenerating its muscle cells, myocytes, is very limited. But what happens to this capability when the heart is damaged by severe heart failure has been unknown.

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have now discovered that after an injury, the rate of cell renewal is even lower than in a healthy heart. Standard-of-care for patients with advanced heart failure is a surgically implanted pump that helps propel blood, a so-called left ventricular assist device (LVAD).

Fin whale nearly 50 feet long washes ashore on Anchorage tidal flats in Alaska

A 47-foot fin whale washed ashore along Anchorage's coastal trail over the weekend. Hundreds of people ventured out onto tidal flats Sunday to take a look at the carcass in the sun.

The first reports of the animal came to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Saturday before 10 p.m., said Barbara Mahoney, a NOAA biologist. On Sunday, Mahoney and other scientists examined the carcass, taking measurements, collecting skin samples and anchoring it down so they can continue their analysis on Monday.

"We don't know what happened to it," Mahoney said. "They follow food, but I am not sure what it was following this time of year."

Fin whales, which are classified as endangered, migrate worldwide and summer as far up north as the Chukchi Sea. Mahoney said that the species can be found in lower Cook Inlet and are fairly uncommon in the Knik Arm, but at least a couple of them have washed up in Southcentral Alaska.

"We've had a few," Mahoney said. "This is the first time I've had one on this beach."

The deceased was identified as Basanti Sahu. Sources said Basanti was alone at home while her family members had gone to a nearby temple. She was sitting in the verandah when the dog entered the house through the window and pounced on her. On returning from the temple, her family members saw the dog attacking her while the woman was screaming for help. The elderly woman subsequently died.

Peeved, her family members chased the dog and beat it to death. On being informed, police reached the spot and sent the woman's body to Bhograi hospital for postmortem. A case was also registered in this connection.

A dead deep-sea oarfish is shown washed up on Grandview Beach in Encinitas on Nov. 7, 2024.
For the second time this year, a rare deep-sea oarfish has washed ashore in San Diego County, giving scientists a chance to study the species without plumbing the depths of the ocean, it was announced Wednesday.

Last week, Scripps Institution of Oceanography PhD candidate Alison Laferriere found the deceased 9.5-foot specimen at Grandview Beach in Encinitas — just the 21st of its species documented to have washed up on California beaches since 1901, officials said.

The previous 12.25-foot long fish was found in August by kayakers and snorkelers in La Jolla Cove.

Ben Frable, manager of the Scripps Oceanography Marine Vertebrate Collection — one of the largest collections of deep-sea fish in the world — contacted the NOAA Fisheries West Coast team to recover the specimen and transport it to the Southwest Fisheries Science Center, according to a Scripps statement.
