A fisherman has died in a horrific shark attack after the beast bit off one of his limbs.

Víctor Alejandro Soto García, 21, was brutally attacked and bitten by a 13-foot long shark which is said to have taken a chunk out of his torso and also left him with one less limb in Yavaros Port, Mexico.

The freediving fisherman had been hunting for scallops at the time of his death, which occurred around 1pm on December 29. Victor's remains were rescued from the waters by his fellow fishermen.

Their daring rescue appeared to be in vain however as the prowling shark in the waters just below them had already dealt a fatal blow of damage to the young fisherman.

His colleagues attempted to resuscitate him after hauling him on board but his injuries were too severe, and Victor passed soon after. Red Cross paramedics on shore confirmed the injuries sustained in the attack led to his death.

Oscar Ruiz Valdez, director of Civil Protection in Sonora State, has since urged those fishing in the area to carry out further safety measures to prevent future shark attack fatalities.

Officials are highlighting the potential use of a shark repellent bracelet, which emits a sonic pattern meant to distract and disturb sharks, keeping them well away from those in the waters.

An investigation into the death is underway though Civil Protection head Valdez believes the bracelet could have saved the man's life should he have worn it while in the waters.

It marks one of the first shark attack tragedies of the year, with the Daily Star reporting on what may have been one of the final fatalities of 2023, when a surfer was pulled from his jet ski and mauled to death.

Jason Carter, from Haiku in Hawaii, was killed after a shark encounter off of the north coast of the island, with pals hailing him as a "dearest friend".
