Mount Marapi in Indonesia erupts with ash 1.6 km high, accompanied by booms and tremors

Mount Marapi, located in Agam and Tanah Datar Regencies, West Sumatra, has erupted again, producing an ash column reaching a height of 1.6 kilometers on Wednesday (23/7/2025) morning. This eruption was also accompanied by loud explosions and vibrations that startled the residents.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) through the Marapi Volcano Observation Post (PGA) reported that the eruption of Marapi occurred on Wednesday at 07:32. The height of the ash column from the eruption was approximately 1,600 meters or 1.6 kilometers above the peak, or about 4,491 meters above sea level.

"The observed ash column is white to gray in color with a thick intensity leaning towards the southeast," said PGA Marapi Post Officer, Teguh Purnomo, in a written statement on Wednesday.

According to Teguh, the eruption of the volcano, which is currently at Level II or Alert status, is recorded on the seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30.5 millimeters and a duration of approximately 1 minute and 18 seconds.

A massive eruption was seen at the at the Minami-dake summit of the Sakurajima Volcano in Japan on July 17, confirmed Japan Meteorological Agency(JMA).

The eruption was marked with dense ash plumes, reaching nearly 3,300 meters (3.3 kilometres) high from the surface of the ground.

"As of 11:00 today (18th), the eruption alert level for Miyakejima was lowered to 1," read the JMA official report.

Videos of the eruption have also surfaced on various social media platforms including X.

The Sundhnukur volcano has erupted near Iceland's capital, Reykjavik, the 12th volcanic eruption in the North Atlantic island nation since 2021, the Icelandic Meteorological Office says.

The agency said in a statement on Wednesday morning that an eruptive fissure in southwestern Iceland is 700 to 1,000 metres (765 to 1,095 yards) long.

"Lava is mostly flowing to the southeast and is not approaching any infrastructure," it added. "Based on GPS measurements and deformation signals, it is likely that this was a relatively small eruption."

Live images showed flows of lava and smoke being belched into the sky.

People were evacuated from the Blue Lagoon, a luxury geothermal spa resort, and the nearby fishing town of Grindavik, according to the public broadcaster RUV, which quoted police.

The Pacific Ring of Fire is experiencing an unprecedented surge in volcanic activity, reaching alarming levels in 2024 and continuing into 2025, News.Az reports, citing foreign media.

As of May 2, 2025, 47 volcanoes remain in active eruption status, marking one of the highest counts in recorded history, News.Az reports, citing foreign media.

Throughout 2024, 74 eruptions occurred across 65 different volcanoes, significantly surpassing previous years' activity. Volcanic monitoring agencies worldwide have raised alert levels, warning that the intense seismic activity in the region shows no signs of subsiding.

Geologists are particularly concerned about the clustering of major eruptions within such a compressed timeframe, suggesting possible interconnected geological processes. Indonesia stands at the epicenter of this volcanic awakening, with 120 active volcanoes positioned along the horseshoe-shaped fault system.

Indonesia's rumbling Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki erupted Monday, sending a column of volcanic materials as high as 18 kilometers (11 miles) into the sky and depositing ash on villages.

The volcano has been at the highest alert level since last month and no casualties were immediately reported.

Indonesia's Geology Agency recorded an avalanche of searing gas clouds mixed with rocks and lava traveling up to 5 kilometers (3 miles) down the volcano's slopes during the eruption. Observations from drones showed lava filling the crater, indicating deep movement of magma that set off volcanic earthquakes.

A volcano erupted in Japan on Thursday as the country approaches the date of a 'mega disaster' forecast by a 'prophet' decades ago.

The huge blast took place on Mount Shinmoedake at 2:01pm local time, sending a towering ash plume and making it one of the biggest eruptions on the mountain in recent years.

Japan's Meteorological Agency is now bracing for falling volcanic rocks and pyroclastic flows within a near two mile radius of Mount Shinmoedake.

Authorities have also warned residents to stay inside as it prepares for the worst.

It comes as an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 was recorded off the coast of the Tokara island chain yesterday.

A major natural disaster was predicted by manga artist Ryo Tatsuki, who has been likened to Bulgarian prophet Baba Vanga.

A mud volcano has roared to life in front of a temple in Taiwan, with mesmerizing videos capturing the moments mud shot out of the ground beneath a crown of fire.

The Wandan mud volcano, located in the Wandan Township of southern Taiwan, spat bubbling mud out of four separate vents on Thursday (June 26) as ejected material reached a height of 6.6 feet (2 meters), Formosa Television (FTV) News reported.

Footage from the roughly 10-hour-long eruption shows flames igniting above the bubbling mud. However, while mud volcanoes can ignite naturally, the Wandan flames were deliberately set by local people to burn off ejected methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change, according to Reddit posts by Mark Tingay, an adjunct associate professor of geology and geophysics at the University of Adelaide in Australia.

Japan's Shinmoedake volcano erupts, first since 2018 - alert level remains at two

Shinmoedake, a volcano in the mountain range on the border of Japan's Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures, erupted on Sunday, marking its first eruption since 2018.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that the eruption occurred at around 4:37 pm local time, sending a plume of ash over 500 metres above the crater.

The smoke drifted eastward toward Miyazaki prefecture, and no falling volcanic rocks have been confirmed so far, the national broadcaster NHK reported.

Volcanic alert level two, which restricts entry near the crater, remains in effect for the region.

Authorities urge caution within a 2-km radius of the crater due to the risk of large volcanic rocks and pyroclastic flows within approximately one kilometre.

Residents are advised to stay alert, especially on the downwind side, where ash and small rocks may be carried over long distances. -

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province erupted on Tuesday (Jun 17), spewing a towering ash cloud 11km high, the country's volcanology agency said.

The agency also said it had raised the alert level of the volcano to the most dangerous, warning of potential lava flows if it rains heavily.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, a 1,584m-high twin-peaked volcano on the tourist island of Flores, erupted at 5.35pm there, the volcanology agency said in a statement.

"The ash column was observed to be grey with thick intensity," it added.

Mukijo, the Observation Post Officer of Mount Raung in Kampung Mangaran, Sumber Arum Village, Songgon District, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java, mentioned in his report that the eruption occurred at 04:53 p.m. local time. "The ash column was observed to be grayish black in color with moderate to thick intensity, leaning toward the southwest and west," said Mukijo in his written report on Saturday afternoon, June 14, 2025.

As per the release of this article, there has been no change in the volcanic activity level of Mount Raung, which administratively and geographically covers Banyuwangi, Jember, and Bondowoso regencies.

The Center of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) announced that the volcanic activity of Mount Raung remains at Level II, which caution visitors to avoid 3-kilometer radius of the crater.

Meanwhile, the seismic observations in the last 24 hours until early Saturday morning mentioned several seismic activities, including 5 times of eruption tremors with an amplitude of 4-5 mm and earthquake duration of 36-52 seconds.
