Adapt 2030 Ice Age Report: Global 'Peak Wheat' production has arrived - What it means for you

wheat harvest
We have reached "Peak Wheat" production globally as the current 4% decline in yields is not enough to cover the demand on our planet. There is enough to supply if we continue to dig into carryover stocks and reserves, but at these rates this will last for five years maximum, all the while global yields will continue to decrease and more mouths to feed will drive consumption. This is the most detailed overall picture to show you where we are in terms of Grand Solar Minimum crop losses and where we are headed in the next five years. The information will allow you to map out the changes to protect your family and yourselves and get communities organized around you.

Comment: Crop and cattle losses are on the rise everywhere, whether it is due to extensive drought, massive hail, epic flooding, unexpected frosts, and even epidemics. See also: Erratic seasons and extreme weather devastating crops around the world

An unusual frost hit Rio Colorado, Argentina last week at the height of the summer, seriously affecting agricultural production of the region.

The event was recorded on February 26, 2019, when a local weather station registered below freezing temperatures that reached -1.1 °C (30 °F) in parts of the productive area and -2.0 °C (28.4 °F) in other areas. The low temperatures also surprised some localities south of La Pampa, where temperatures of -3.8 °C (25.1 °F) were recorded.

The frost lasted 4 hours, causing direct damage pumpkins, tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, melons, watermelons and other vegetable crops to a lesser extent.

Agronomist Pilar Muniz said frost at this time is unusual. No one expected it and so producers were not prepared against it.

"In this sector, we expect the first frosts at the end of March, early April, but not at this time," Muniz said.

The past month's heavy snow has caused trouble for many Minnesota dairy farmers.

Lucas Sjostrom, executive director of the Minnesota Milk Producers Association, said some tanker trucks haven't been able get down snow-choked rural roads to pick up milk.

"There are tons and tons of dairies around the state that had to dump milk in recent days," he said. "I know it's in the hundreds. It may be over 1,000 dairies."

Sjostrom also said roofs caved in on at least 20 Minnesota dairy barns — in some cases killing and injuring cows.

He said a roof failure was the final straw for a fifth-generation Olmsted County farm family, who sold their herd after years of low milk prices.

Record-breaking snowfall for February in Idaho

snow
Five weather records were broken in February and one record was broken by more than two feet.

February was a recording breaking month for snowfall in eastern Idaho and just over the border into Wyoming. Island Park, Picabo in Blaine County, Stanley, Swan Valley and Jackson, Wyoming all broke snowfall records for February.

"A lot of near-record or record-breaking snowfall totals for the month of February. Island Park takes the proverbial cake with this one," National Weather Service Meteorologist Alex DeSmet told EastIdahoNews.com.

Island Park received a total of 105.6 inches of snow in February. The previous record was 78 inches in 1949. That's a difference of 27.6 inches.

"It's already a snow place and to break the record by that wide of a margin is pretty impressive," DeSmet said.

While Metro Vancouver saw a great deal of snow this February, the snowfall wasn't the most exceptional component of last month's weather.

In fact, February 2019 was the coldest February on record in Metro Vancouver since the records began in 1937. Not only did the month see some frigid temperatures, but they also persisted throughout the month.

Vancouver Is Awesome spoke to Matt MacDonald, Meteorologist, Environment Canada, who explained just how the chilly the month was.

"We typically see around seven days in the double digits during the month of February," he described. "We didn't have a single day above 10 degrees this month."

Snowfall in February averaged 22.5 inches across Iowa, a new record

SNOW
Mother Nature set a new record for Iowa in February.

"The preliminary numbers have us at 22.5 inches of snow, averaging across the state, which would break the record set in 1962," State Climatologist Justin Glisan announced this morning.

Having nearly two feet of snow fall in Iowa in February is not normal.

"In a given February, we typically get 6.8 inches over the 30 year average, so — yes — it's a lot more snow than we tend to get," Glisan told Radio Iowa.
