Sierra travelers hit with heavy snow and road closures

Heavy snowfall arrived in the Sierra on Tuesday, causing spinouts and forcing highway shutdowns up and down the mountain.

During the afternoon hours, drivers traveling along Interstate 80 felt the effects of the Sierra snow.

"You can't be in a hurry. Just be OK with 25 miles per hour and you'll get there," said Angela Sneed.

Sneed was driving from Roseville to Reno with her sister, Ellie Drisenga, and their new puppy. The trio made a pitstop in Nyack.

"Full tank of gas, case of water and beef jerky," said Sneed, who listed off items gathered during the stop.

Australians have woken up to an icy morning as the country is lashed by two jet streams that have pooled cold air over the eastern seaboard.

The cold Antarctic air has been dragged north by a pend in the polar jetstream - a band of wind that continuously flows about 8 to 15km above sea level.

Icy gusts are lashing the east coast and snow is dumping just outside of Sydney and in south-eastern alpine region as the polar jetstream clashes with the separate subtropical jetstream.

It comes as residents of Melbourne and Canberra experience temperatures in the single digits - with the nation's capital hitting just six degrees on Wednesday morning and Melbourne nine degrees, with the mercury set to rise throughout the day.

We recently saw significant snowfall across Western Canada, hindering travel and causing power outages. It came as quite the shock for many residents on the Prairies after summer-like warmth had gripped parts of the region just days beforehand.

On Friday, it was Nunavut's turn. The remote Northern Canada region was hit with a major winter storm -- its first blizzard of the season. The storm brought howling 100+ km/h winds, significant snow and blizzard conditions to southeastern areas of Baffin Island and nearby marine regions.

A heavy snowfall advisory has been issued for mountainous regions of northern Gangwon Province, as 12 centimeters of snow at Mount Seorak prompted an entry restriction.

According to the Seoraksan National Park Office, entry to Daecheongbong Peak and other high altitude areas have been prohibited since the advisory was issued at 8:10 a.m. on Monday.

The morning low near the mountain's Juncheong shelter plunged to minus three-point-four degrees Celsius as of 6 a.m.

An official from the park office urged visitors to prepare supplies and equipment for safety and protection from the cold as the winter season has arrived in mountainous areas.

Environment Canada says Moose Jaw received anywhere from 30 to 40 centimetres of wet, heavy snow while Swift Current appears to have gotten 20 to 30 centimetres.

Meteorologist Terri Lang says in between there, areas may have received even more snow.

Lang says 15 to 25 millimetres of precipitation melted down so it's a good snowfall for dry areas of the province which have been thirsting for moisture.

Alta is off to a good start this season after a weekend storm brought more than two feet of snow to the area.

The official snow total was 25 inches, The National Weather Service reported.

This total passes the October monthly average, which is 24.4 inches.

Other areas of Utah also saw significant snow totals. Solitude received 18 inches, Summit Park got ten inches and Tooele saw seven inches.

We knew it was only a matter of time before a major city in Canada was hit with its first significant snowfall of the season. However, many Calgarians wish they weren't the first to deal with this much of it.

Third-party websites such as Twitter and Facebook reported that Cochrane saw 15-22 cm while Kananaskis Valley recorded 27 cm.

Snowfall records, which began in 1881 were broken at Calgary International Airport. The area reported a one day total of 19 cm on Saturday, October 22, setting a new record for this day. The entire snowfall event total for Calgary -- from Friday night to Sunday morning -- has been reported as 23 cm.
