Monsanto's Roundup to be labeled 'Carcinogenic' by California's Environmental Protection Agency

Image

The California Environmental Protection Agency announced today that it plans to label glyphosate — the most widely used herbicide and main ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup — as a chemical "known to cause cancer." The World Health Organization's research arm also recently found that the chemical is probably carcinogenic to humans, and research has also linked glyphosate to the steep decline of monarch butterflies. And as we reported this week, scientists have increasingly raised new alarms about potential negative health impacts tied to Roundup, including a recent study suggesting that long-term exposure to tiny amounts of the chemical (thousands of times lower than what is allowed in drinking water in the US) could lead to liver and kidney problems.

Today's announcement from the EPA's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment is officially a "notice of intent" to list this pesticide as carcinogenic, giving the public an opportunity to comment on the proposal through October 5. The action falls under Proposition 65, a measure voters approved in 1986 that requires the state to publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harms. The state regularly updates the list, which now includes hundreds of chemicals. Under Prop 65, businesses must provide a "clear and reasonable" warning before exposing people to a chemical on the list. The warning could be labels on a consumer product, workplace postings, distributed notices at apartment buildings, or a notice published in a newspaper.

Comment: While the 'World Health Organization's research arm also recently found that the chemical is probably carcinogenic to humans.' The toxic effects of glyphosate have been well-documented for years!

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has reported the first death from West Nile Virus in the Tarheel State in 2015. The state did not have any previous cases this year.

So far in 2015, 415 cases of West Nile have been reported to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 45 states and the District of Columbia. There were 10 deaths from the mosquito-borne disease in the country as of September 1.

North Carolina has not released any information about the victim, including age, gender and location of the person who died.

"This is a tragic reminder that these infections, though relatively rare, can be fatal, "Dr. Carl Williams, State Public Health veterinarian, said in a statement. "We see most cases of mosquito-borne illness in the months from August through October, but you can still enjoy your time outdoors by following some basic control measures."

About 1 in 5 people infected with West Nile Virus will develop a fever with other symptoms. Less than 1 percent of infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, neurologic illness, the CDC said.

Three major ways to improve your mitochondrial function

Mitochondria
© MicrobeWikiMitochondrium
Mitochondria are unique organelles contained in every cell of the human body, other than red blood cells, and they contain their own unique DNA. Mitochondria are involved in nearly every major metabolic process, and they help form 90% of the body's cellular energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Discover three major ways to improve your mitochondrial function and enhance your quality of life.

Improving the function of your mitochondria can be as simple as making lifestyle changes. Certain strategies have been shown to treat symptoms associated with mitochondrial defects. You can use these techniques beginning today to help you maintain mighty mitochondria.

The physiological effects of mitochondria function

The healthy function of mitochondria is essential to life sustaining metabolic processes including(1, 2):

- Regulating ion concentrations such as calcium buffering critical to intracellular communication
- Synthesizing products necessary for the transportation of glucose and insulin
- Maintaining roles in fluctuating lipid levels
- Regulating the removal of cellular damage or apoptosis if condition is deleterious enough to the mitochondrion's function
- Providing sufficient energy for blood flow to and within the heart

Melatonin production in teens suppressed by light from phones or tablets

Image
A new study has an important implication for tweens and young teens as they head back to school: Taking a gadget to bed could really hurt their sleep.

Enough light exposure at night can keep anyone from falling asleep as quickly as they otherwise would have. But the new research, published online in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, finds that the sleep biology of boys and girls aged 9 to 15 who were in the earlier stages of puberty were especially sensitive to light at night compared to older teens. In lab experiments, an hour of nighttime light exposure suppressed their production of the sleep-timing hormone melatonin significantly more than the same light exposure did for teens aged 11 to 16 who were farther into puberty.

The brighter the light in the experiments, the more melatonin was suppressed. Among 38 children in early to middle puberty an hour of 15 lux of light (think dim "mood" lighting) suppressed melatonin by 9.2 percent, 150 lux (normal room light) reduced it by 26 percent, and 500 lux (as bright as in a supermarket) reduced it by 36.9 percent. The 29 teens in the late or post-puberty stage were also affected, but not as much. Exposure to 15 lux did not suppress melatonin at all, 150 lux reduced it 12.5 percent, and 500 lux reduced it by 23.9 percent.

'Biological age' blood test, may help identify Alzheimer's risk

blood test
© Jorge Dan Lopez / ReutersBlood test can detect 'biological age' & predict Alzheimer's risk, says study
There may actually be some truth to the phrase "age is just a number." Scientists have developed a blood test to determine how old our bodies really are - and it could be key to predicting a person's risk of developing Alzheimer's and other conditions.

The test, developed by a team at King's College London, measures a person's "biological age," which may be younger or older than their actual chronological age.

"We use birth year, or chronological age, to judge everything from insurance premiums to whether you get a medical procedure or not. Most people accept that all 60-year-olds are not the same, but there has been no reliable test for underlying biological age," said study leader James Timmons, professor of precision medicine at King's College London, as quoted by AAP

How Colostrum can help heal leaky gut syndrome

Image
So my last post about How I Healed My Leaky Gut generated the most overwhelming (and much welcomed) response from you all.

I received several comments on the blog, Facebook, Instagram, e-mails and even text and phone calls from friends who have reached out to me about experiencing similar GI distress.

As much as I wouldn't wish what I've dealt with on anyone, I found a lot of comfort to hear from you and to know that I wasn't crazy, that it wasn't all in my head and that, most importantly, I wasn't alone. So thank you for that...

So with all of the above being said, there was obviously a ton of questions regarding colostrum.

What is it? How does it heal a leaky gut? How much should I take? How do I pick out a good quality brand? What about dairy allergies/intolerances?

This post is intended to clear up all those questions for you. Ideally, I would have written an informative post like this first, but I really felt the urgency to share my success with others. I had no idea it would generate so much traffic on this site. Glad it did though.

What is Colostrum?

Colostrum, aka "pre-milk", is produced by all mammals (including humans) during late pregnancy for their newborn to drink in the first few days of life, just before the breast milk comes in. The purpose of colostrum is to act as a form of passive immunity and provide a hefty dose of anti-bodies, such as IgA, IgG and IgM, which help to build the newborn's immunity. It also contains antimicrobials and several growth factors.

Natural infection with the Measles and Mumps protect against Heart Attack and Stroke

Image
Breaking news. Measles and mumps protect against heart attack and stroke! Could the mass vaccination program of the U.S. lead to an explosion of heart attacks?

Myocardial infarctions are already the leading cause of death in the world today. The situation could get much worse.

A prestigious journal reported that men who had measles and mumps as children suffered 29% less heart attacks and 17% less strokes! Women with a history of both infections had a 17% lower risk of cardiovascular disease and 21% lower risk of stroke. The journal Atherosclerosis recently published these shocking findings in the June 2015 issue(1).

Comment: Natural infection meaning not from the MMR vaccine! According to the Alliance for Natural Health, the Mumps vaccine proves ineffective, from the article:
In the early 2000s, researchers began to notice an alarming pattern: those vaccinated against mumps were still becoming ill with it - at alarming rates.

This worrisome trend is accelerating: in April 2014, the New Jersey Department of Health warned of an outbreak of mumps at the Stevens Institute of Technology. Eight cases of mumps were confirmed - yet all of those infected had been fully vaccinated with two documented doses of the MMR shot.

What's going on here? Is the vaccine losing its efficacy - or was it never effective in the first place?
The effectiveness of the MMR vaccine in preventing mumps is - according to Dr. William Schaffer, a pro-vaccine researcher at Vanderbilt University - "not so good." A CDC study of a 2009 - 2010 mumps outbreak in the northeastern US found that a full 77% of those sickened in 2009 outbreak had been vaccinated.

Skin's ability to 'smell' seems to help it heal itself

Image
The right scents, at a high enough concentration, could kick your cells into healing action
How does your skin smell? Pretty well, as it turns out, thanks to receptors dotted all over you. What's more, they could help you heal.

There are more than 350 types of olfactory receptors in the nose, tuned to different scents. About 150 are also found in internal tissues such as those of the heart, liver and gut, but they are hard to study.

Hanns Hatt's lab at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany focused on skin, which is easier to study, and tested the response to scents of receptors in keratinocytes, the main skin cell type.
