tornado paris france
At least one person died when a "mini-tornado" tore through the northern suburbs of Paris.

The extreme winds began just before 6pm local time on Monday and affected about a dozen towns in the Val-d'Oise region of France. Nine people were injured, four of whom are in a critical condition.

Philippe Court, the head of the local authority, declared the "violent, sudden windy episode" to be a "mini-tornado".

The gusts were so strong they tore off roofs and toppled three cranes. One fell on a centre for disabled children and another on a house.

Videos filmed in Ermont, a village about 20 miles north of the capital, showed the cranes swaying violently in the wind before falling as debris flew through the air.

Kilauea volcano in Hawaii produces record-breaking lava fountains in episode 35

mmmmm
Kilauea put on a record-breaking light show with episode 35 of its current eruption.

After a couple of days of bubbling and overflows, lava fountains began spewing from the north vent in Halemaumau crater at about 8:05 p.m. Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

That was followed by fountains from the south vent, which began at about 8:50 p.m. and grew rapidly, with lava from both vents feeding large flows on the crater floor, USGS said.

At 10:11 p.m., USGS reported record-high fountains for this eruption at nearly 1,500 feet.

Dead eels wash up on Kualoa Beach, Hawaii

mmmmm
Recent videos circling on social media have shown an alarming amount of dead sea life washing along the shores of Kualoa Beach in Windward Oahu, particularly eels.

While the videos have sparked concern from residents and locals alike, what caused the fatalities is still a mystery.

"Everything that we do on land affects our oceans," said Anthony Burke, Waikiki Aquarium Lead Coral Biologist. "Let's say you have a slight oil leak in your car and it's causing a little patch in your driveway, you'd think that might not be a big deal, but if that's happening to hundreds of people in the area, the next time the rain falls, all of that oil will be swept out to sea."

Burke said that because the videos primarily show eels, it's safe to assume that the issue is something that affects benthic animals, meaning the bottom area of a body of water.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources became aware of the incident through social media and went out to the beach to investigate. However, no eels were found.

5.0-magnitude earthquake strikes Alaska as thousands evacuated from typhoon-ravaged towns

Alaska has been hit by a strong 5.0 magnitude earthquake, just days after remnants of Typhoon Halong brought a record storm surge to western Alaska on Sunday.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) detected the quake at 11:48am ET, about 39 miles off the coast of Akutan, which is home to nearly 1,600 people.

While a small community, Akutan has the largest fish processing plant in North America, which processes millions of pounds of fish daily.

More than a dozen people have issued reports of shaking to the USGS, with the number increasing. The earthquake struck along the Aleutian Arc, which consists of several active and dormant volcanoes.

The seismic activity to the south comes as thousands of people living in the northwestern region of Alaska are being airlifted to safety.

Comment: Alaska clearly isn't top of mind for most American media. Note the date:

Tropical storm kills family of five as it hits Philippines
At least five people have been killed and two reported missing as Tropical Storm Fengshen sweeps through the Philippines, triggering heavy flooding on the main island of Luzon and a vast landslide on the southern island of Mindanao.

In Quezon province in the north of the country, five members of one family, including two children, were crushed to death when a tree fell on their bamboo house early on Sunday, according to Philippine disaster agency officials in the town of Pitogo, where the incident took place.

Images posted on social media by officials showed the house destroyed under the weight of a large palm tree, as a rescue team worked to remove the bodies of the family.

According to a statement shared on social media, a teenage boy was the lone survivor of the accident in Pitogo, about 153km (95 miles) southeast of the capital Manila.

Severe storm drops more than 60 liters of rain per square meter in less than an hour, causes numerous floods in Íllora, Spain

mmmmm
Granada's western region experienced a Friday afternoon marked by a brief yet intense downpour. A storm descended heavily on the municipality of Íllora in less than an hour, leaving up to 60 liters per square meter and triggering a yellow warning from the Aemet (National Meteorological Agency ). The heavy downpour caused at least fifteen incidents, according to 112 Andalucía, mainly due to flooding in homes, garages, and streets that were completely submerged.

Several residents experienced flooding in their homes and businesses, forcing them to act quickly to prevent further damage. Granada Fire Department crews and municipal workers responded to the area to pump out the water and clear the mud from the roads.

The heavy downpour also disrupted traffic on several roads. The A-336, which connects Íllora with Pinos Puente, and the GR-4403, which leads to Puerto Lope, had to be temporarily closed due to accumulated water. In addition, the emergency services warned of problems in other parts of the West, such as the A-4154 as it passes through Montefrío and Algarinejo, recommending drivers exercise caution due to the presence of puddles on the road.

Heavy rains in Costa Rica cause severe flooding - 6 inches of rainfall in just hours

mmmmm
Costa Rica faces another tough week as persistent heavy rains pound our country, leading to widespread flooding, landslides, and disrupted lives. This October, the rainy season hits hard, with communities in Guanacaste and the Central Valley bearing the brunt.

Families scramble to safety, roads turn impassable, and officials urge caution amid rising waters. The situation underscores the challenges of a wetter-than-usual month, driven by atmospheric patterns that show no quick end.

In Guanacaste, Nicoya stands out as one of the hardest-hit areas. Flooding swamped areas like Curime, San Martín, Fortuna, Sámara, and Qiriman, where the Potrero River overflowed and cut off dozens of families. Vehicles got swept away in the currents, and access roads collapsed under the strain.

Nearby in Carrillo, Filadelfia saw sewer systems fail, while Cuajiniquil in La Cruz dealt with overflowing rivers and streams that blocked routes. Reports from Nosara and Hojancha show similar chaos, with rainfall totals reaching 151 mm and 96 mm in just hours yesterday. Landslides knocked down trees, and streams burst their banks, leaving homes isolated and communities on edge.

Swarm reveals growing weak spot in Earth's magnetic field

Swarm
Swarm
Using 11 years of magnetic field measurements from the European Space Agency's Swarm satellite constellation, scientists have discovered that the weak region in Earth's magnetic field over the South Atlantic - known as the South Atlantic Anomaly - has expanded by an area nearly half the size of continental Europe since 2014.

Earth's magnetic field is vital to life on our planet. It is a complex and dynamic force that protects us from cosmic radiation and charged particles from the Sun.

It is largely generated by a global ocean of molten, swirling liquid iron that makes up the outer core around 3000 km beneath our feet. Acting like a spinning conductor in a bicycle dynamo, it creates electrical currents, which in turn, generate our continuously changing electromagnetic field - but in reality the processes that generate the field are far more complex.
