Locals gather around the carcass of the whale shark in Balasore
The carcass of a 19-foot-long whale shark weighing nearly 1,500 kg was netted by fishermen off Sahabajipur coast in Balasore's Bhograi block on Wednesday.

Jaleswar range officer Jayshree Murmu said a group of fishermen from Sahabajipur had ventured into the sea on Wednesday morning for fishing. They cast their net around 700 feet from the shore. While the net was being hauled, the whale shark got entangled in the mesh. By the time the net was drawn closer, the shark had already died.

With much difficulty, the fishermen managed to bring the dead whale shark near the shore. However, they could not pull the carcass on to Udaipur beach despite the help of local villagers due to its enormous size.

The regions now on maximum alert are Attica, Central Macedonia (especially Pieria, Imathia, Chalkidiki and Thessaloniki), Thessaly, Central Greece, Peloponnese, Ionian Islands, North Aegean, South Aegean (with particular emphasis on Santorini/Thira and Rhodes) and Crete.

A neighbor who asked not to be identified said he arrived home around 2:30 p.m. and saw a woman screaming in the middle of the road.

"I couldn't understand what she was saying," he said. "I tried to help. I came up on her and asked her what was going on. She wouldn't answer me. She ran off. Then I heard one siren, and then I heard more, and knew the cavalry was coming, basically."

Officers, paramedics and animal control responded to the scene. One dog charged at officers and was shot, while the remaining animals were seized by animal control.

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Tuesday (2/12/2025), the eruption occurred at 10.34 WIB.
Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Tuesday (2/12/2025), the eruption occurred at 10.34 WIB.
Mount Marapi erupted today, sending a towering ash plume over homes in Indonesia. The restive volcano sparked panic when it spewed a billowing cloud of smoke at around 10:34 am local time today. Footage shows the eruption as seen from different parts of West Sumatra.

The Indonesian Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) said: 'Mount Marapi, West Sumatra, erupted at 10:34 a.m. WIB, but the height of the ash column was not observed. 'This eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30.3 mm and a duration of approximately 51 seconds.' Mount Marapi is currently placed at the hazard Alert Level II.

The PVMBG warned locals and tourists to clear a three-kilometre radius from the volcano. Mount Marapi, located in West Sumatra, is one of the country's most active volcanoes and is known for frequent, sudden eruptions. Its steep slopes and popular hiking trails attract many tourists, but authorities often restrict access due to ongoing volcanic activity. Indonesia lies on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcanic eruptions and earthquakes happen.

According to Tojiboyev, his partner, Khursandmurod Olimov, rushed to help, but the wolf also injured him. Despite their injuries, the two shepherds managed to kill the wolf using a knife and a shepherd's staff.

The highlands of Anarki and Zaouiat Ahansal witnessed their first snowfall this morning, blanketing the peaks of the High and Middle Atlas Mountains in a thick layer of white. This resulted in the closure of several roads and hampered movement between villages and neighboring towns.

From the early hours of the morning, snow removal equipment belonging to the High and Middle Atlas Group of Municipalities immediately began urgent field operations to reopen vital routes and ensure the continuity of essential services for residents.

Snowfall in the highlands of Anarki and Zawiya Ahansal, and snow removal equipment belonging to the group of communities is intervening.

US natural gas prices hit three-year high: Forecasts point to "long, cold winter"

blizzard
U.S. natural gas futures spiked to their highest levels in nearly three years as models now show a frigid first half of December across the Lower 48. Several forecasters are also warning of a potential polar-vortex-driven Arctic blast event later this month, which could drive temperatures even lower.

Let's begin with an unusual sight (for this time of year) of winter storm alerts across the Northeast on Tuesday morning.

Comment: Is the forecast of "fringe" researchers finally bearing out? Climate scientists on the margins have been warning of global cooling for decades. One season does not a pattern make, but the shift to colder global temperatures seems to be gathering strength.
