A pair of snowy owls, the latest celebrity visitors to the beach and pier near Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary, have drawn hundreds for a glimpse at the Arctic birds of prey.

Several dozen birdwatchers were still gathered at the pier at Montrose Beach just before sunset Tuesday afternoon. The city has closed a section of the pier for the black-and-white-feathered guests, and signs in the area advise spectators to keep at least 300 feet away as a "warm welcome" for the birds.

About 4:15 p.m., one snowy owl could be spotted perched atop a pole at the end of the concrete pier stretching into Lake Michigan, while the other was resting at the far side of the pier.

"It's all a gamble," a birdwatcher was heard telling a group who arrived just in time for a peek at the owls.

2-year-old boy mauled to death by pit bull in Greece

PIT BULL ATTACK
A two-year-old boy has died on the Greek island of Zakynthos after being mauled by a pit bull dog in the garden of his family home.

The attack happened shortly after the family returned from a shopping trip. As they entered the property, the family's pit bull, which they had recently taken in as a stray, is reported to have suddenly attacked the child. The dog bit the boy with extreme force, causing devastating injuries to his head and neck.

According to local reports, the parents had been keeping the dog in their garden since taking it from the street a few weeks earlier. Witnesses say the couple fought frantically to pull their son from the animal's jaws. The father, an Albanian national, later told authorities he struggled to free the boy's head from the dog's mouth and cried out that the animal had "eaten" his child. The boy's mother, a British national, is said to be in deep shock and is being treated in hospital.

607 dead and 214 missing as heavy rains trigger landslides and floods in Sri Lanka (UPDATES)

mmmmm
Sri Lanka stopped passenger trains and closed roads in some parts of the country where landslides and floods triggered by heavy rains have caused more than 20 deaths, officials said on Thursday (November 27, 2025).

The government's disaster management center said 18 of the reported deaths occurred in the tea-growing, mountainous regions of Badulla and Nuwara Eliya in the country's central province about 300 kilometres (186 miles) east of the capital Colombo.

Another 14 people were missing on Thursday due to landslides in the same areas, the center said.

The death toll has risen to 31 since last week, when Sri Lanka began grappling with severe weather. Heavy downpours over the weekend wreaked havoc by flooding homes, fields and roads.

Authorities stopped trains in some areas in the mountainous region after rocks, muds and trees fell onto tracks and local television showed workers busy removing the debris. Roads also were closed due to heavy flooding.

The severe weather has impacted about 4,000 families, the center said.

Nearly 500 endangered Caspian seals have washed up dead along Russia's Caspian Sea coast, prompting officials in the republic of Dagestan to launch a multi-agency investigation, regional authorities said Wednesday.

Dagestan's natural resources ministry said teams began surveying roughly 300 kilometers (86 miles) of shoreline after receiving the first reports of seal deaths.

"So far, 484 seal carcasses have been found washed ashore," the ministry said, adding that its search had expanded across several coastal districts. Officials notified relevant agencies to collect and dispose of the carcasses and determine the cause of death.

The ministry noted that seal deaths occur annually during migration season and cited recent research suggesting that asphyxiation caused by natural gas releases from the seabed is a leading factor.
