Thousands of people fled their homes near a Philippine volcano after an eruption sent ash and steam hundreds of metres into the sky.

Taal volcano, which sits in a picturesque lake south of Manila, exploded with a "short-lived" burst at 7.22 am on Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said in a statement.

It warned further eruptions were possible, which it said could trigger dangerous, fast-moving volcanic flows of gas, ash and debris, as well as a tsunami.

Residents in five fishing and farming settlements around the lake were ordered to leave their homes, in the third mass evacuation in as many years around one of the country's most active volcanoes.

Intense Saharan dust sandstorm hits Spain for the second time
A huge Saharan dust storm has swept across Spain for the second time. Residents in Costa del Sol woke up to eerie skies with an orange hue caused by tiny particles of dust that had travelled thousands of miles across the Mediterranean Sea on Thursday.

Amber weather warnings are in place in Malaga as the red dust - accompanied by heavy rainfall and strong winds - continues to cause poor visibility for drivers.

The sandstorm has caused several cancellations and flight delays at Malaga Airport.

The dust cloud blanketed streets and houses in southern regions and turned skies orange last week.

Northwestern Iran blanketed by heavy spring snow

snow
During the first days of the new season and shortly after the beginning of spring, an unprecedented snowfall, accompanied by strong winds and blizzards, hit the region of Arasbaran in northwestern Iran.

The blizzards also ripped through the cities of Ahar and Kalibar in East Azerbaijan Province, robbing people there of the warmth of spring and causing them to tremble in the cold.

The cities and mountains of Arasbaran are so white and wintry at this time of the year that it seems the spring is preserving the memories of winter.

Snow pileup damages Alaska pipeline company's massive Valdez oil tanks

The company that operates the trans-Alaska pipeline has called in backup crews to contend with massive amounts of snow piled on top of its oil storage tanks in Valdez, which has damaged infrastructure and vented petroleum vapors to the environment in what state regulators say are violations of the Clean Air Act.

The incident has forced the Valdez Marine Terminal's operator, Alyeska Pipeline Service Co., to take multiple tanks out of service, though it says there have been no impacts to oil shipments so far.

To try to prevent further damage, Alyeska is now sending up dozens of respirator-equipped contractors for the painstaking work of removing the snow.

Those crews are working nearly around the clock, according to Michelle Egan, an Alyeska spokeswoman. The contractors, who are roped to the top of the tanks, cannot use plows or power tools, so they're cutting off blocks of snow with saws and sliding them off the edge.

Greece has been dusted with snow as temperatures across the country have dropped on Sunday, which is the first day of Spring.

Sunday marks the Spring Equinox, when the Sun passes over the Equator, bringing with it roughly the same amount of daylight and nighttime. Often, the Spring Equinox brings with it warmer weather, but not this year.

Snowfall began early Sunday morning in the northern suburbs of Athens, and sleet and rain fell in the center of the Greek capital.

According to experts, the snowfall and low temperatures will continue throughout the day and may even extend into Monday.

Much of the country is currently experiencing rainstorms, sleet, and light snowfall in what is an unseasonably wintry storm for the first day of spring.

Wintry scenes after unexpected snow band sweeps central New Mexico

snow
This morning, many in the area woke up to a couple of inches on the snow as a blast of winter weather unexpectedly hit the region overnight.

The snow began around 11 p.m. Tuesday and ended early Wednesday. The Sunport received 3.1 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service while places such as Edgewood received as much as 6.1 inches. 3.9 inches was also reported Tuesday night in Santa Fe.

Multiple agencies told KOB 4 they did know this storm was coming and they were able to prepare crews in time, just not how much. Looking at the roads now, you'd never know the metro got hit with a major snow storm overnight.

"Two o'clock, it just started really coming down, and unfortunately, when these last few storms have hit, they've hit right at like the time when the temperatures are dropping before the morning commute," said Kimberly Gallegos with New Mexico Department of Transportation.
