Streets of Ankara, Turkey flooded after downpours

The streets of the capital Ankara's two districts, Yenimahalle and Keçiören, flooded on June 7 following perpetual downpours throughout the day.

The water level reached 1 meter in some parts, causing material damage, especially in houses and offices on the ground floors.

"The rain started and in just 15 minutes the shop's lower floor was flooded. We could save what we could in the first five minutes," said Ekrem Deste, a shop owner in Yenimahalle. He estimated that he endured a loss worth nearly 15 million Turkish Liras ($895,000).

Magnitude 6.5 earthquake strikes Peru-Brazil border region

An earthquake of magnitude 6.5 struck the Peru-Brazil border region on Tuesday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.

The quake was at a depth of 616 km (383 miles) and struck about 111 km south-southwest of Tarauaca, Brazil, EMSC said.

Thredbo alpine resort in Australia receives over 125cm (4 feet) of snow in 7 days ahead of its official opening

The start to the 2022 ski season has been described as the best in more than 20 years, with the Thredbo alpine resort preparing for a huge opening weekend after 125cm of snow fell over the past seven days.

Snow was still falling at Thredbo on Tuesday afternoon, with the village described as "looking picture perfect" after some 40cm of coverage.

Thredbo's mountain operations teams have been working long hours in preparation for the opening weekend, which will be celebrated with an illumination show and fireworks on Saturday night, June 11.

70-year-old woman dies after family dog attack in Seymour, Tennessee

A 70-year-old woman was killed in an attack by a family dog in Sevier County on Friday, according to the sheriff's office.

Sheriff Ron Seals said officers responded to a residence on Olympic View Court in Seymour on June 3. Upon arrival, they found a woman dead with "numerous" dog bites. She was identified as Debbie Boyd, according to police.

Two large Rottweiler dogs were found in the fenced-in yard of the home, secured by family members prior to the officers' arrival, officials said.

"It was determined that the dogs were in the home with the victim at the time of the attack along with a small child, who was uninjured," Sheriff Ron Seals stated.

Sloth bear
Sloth bear mauled a couple to death and devoured their bodies in Panna district of Madhya Pradesh.

The couple was returning after visiting the Khermai temple on Sunday morning when the attack took place. They reportedly died while sticking together confronting the bear.

Locals informed that the bear had torn their bodies apart before feeding on the carcasses. The bear was captured five hours after the incident.

The temple was located around one kilometre from their house. Deceased were identified as Mukesh Rai, 43, and his wife Gudiya, 39. Bear dragged their bodies near a nullah and remained there for more than four hours.

83-year-old woman attacked, killed by 3 dogs in northwest Calgary

An 83-year-old woman has died after being attacked by three dogs in the community of Capitol Hill Sunday.

Police said the woman was found in the 1500 block of 21 Avenue N.W. at about 2 p.m.

It's believed the woman was gardening in the back alley when dogs escaped from a neighbouring property and attacked her. Police said it's believed the dogs belong to a neighbour.

The woman was taken to hospital and later died from her injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

One dead as fierce storms wreak havoc across 65 departments in France - month's worth of rain in just 12 hours

Fierce thunderstorms, heavy rain and hail caused havoc across France from 03 June 2022. One person died in flood waters in Rouen.

The Ministry of Interior reported on 04 June 2022 that 65 departments across the country were affected by the severe weather. More than 3,500 interventions were carried out by firefighters. Damage to power infrastructure left thousands of homes without electricity. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said one person died in flood waters in Rouen. Across the country 15 people were injured, 2 of them seriously.

For the first time in over 20 years, Météo-France issued orange level alerts for 65 departments in the country. Many other departments were under yellow level alerts.

Bulusan volcano erupts in the Philippines, now on Alert Level 1 status

THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has placed Bulusan Volcano under Alert Level 1 status following its explosion Sunday, June 5, 2022.

Alert Level 1 (low level unrest) means that the volcano is currently in an abnormal condition, said Phivolcs.

It said a phreatic eruption occurred at the volcano summit at 10:37 a.m. Sunday and it lasted approximately 17 minutes.

"The event was poorly visible through cloud cover over the edifice although a steam-rich grey plume at least one kilometer tall was observed from Juban, Sorsogon and was subsequently observed to drift west," said Phivolcs in an advisory.
