The remaining juvenile dolphin returned to deeper water shortly before 4pm. The animal was monitored by Project Jonah and was seen heading back out into the Hauraki Gulf.

More than 60 dead dolphins on Bulgaria's northern coast so far in 2022

dead
More than 60 dolphins have been found dead on Bulgaria's northern Black Sea coast so far this year, according to a report by Nova Televizia.

Separately, in early June, the Green Balkans conservation organisation said that by that point, the regional directorate of the environment ministry in Bourgas on Bulgaria's southern coast had reported 55 dead dolphins since 2022 began.

Nova reported Professor Violin Raikov of the Institute of Oceanology at the Bulgarian Academy of Science as saying: "We know that there are military actions in Ukraine. It is quite likely that underwater explosions would cause such mass death".

For now, the theory that the dolphins had been killed intentionally by people was being rejected, the report said.

Raykov said that cetacean morbilivirus was particularly dangerous for dolphins, which could become infected en masse.

Weeks of heavy rain have caused significant damage and over 20 fatalities in different regions of Chad , including the capital N'Djamena.

In a report of 05 August 2022, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that since June, storms, heavy rain and flooding have affected 3,477 households (over 17,000 people) and destroyed 1,312 houses. Further more at least 22 people have lost their lives and 229 have been injured.

The worst affected areas are in the province of Sila, in particular Kimiti and Koukou-Angarana where heavy rainfall on 29 July affected more than 8,142 people. OCHA said the Gozamir refugee camp in the area was particularly affected. Needs for essential household items, food, shelter and access to health and nutritional services have been identified in these areas as priorities. In terms of response, an international NGO has been delivering drinking water since 01 August and is strengthening the promotion of hygiene and sanitation and the construction of latrines in the disaster area.

6.1 Magnitude earthquake strikes off New Caledonia coast

CCCC
A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of New Caledonia in the South Pacific Ocean.

The epicenter of the earthquake occurred southeast of the Loyalty Islands off the eastern coast of Caledonia, at a depth of 80.6 kilometers, US Geological Survey said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or material losses due to the quake.

New Caledonia lies in the Pacific's Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates meet, the friction of which leads to intense seismic and volcanic activity.

  • Flash floods could follow dry weather, say Met Office
Britain officially declared a drought in parts of England on Friday as households faced new curbs on water usage during a prolonged period of hot and dry weather that has kindled wildfires and tested infrastructure.

The drought, the first in England since 2018, means that water companies will step up efforts to manage the impact of dry weather on farmers and the environment, including by managing water to protect supplies, the Environment Agency said. read more
"All water companies have reassured us that essential supplies are still safe, and we have made it clear it is their duty to maintain those supplies," Water Minister Steve Double said, following a meeting of the National Drought Group.

"We are better prepared than ever before for periods of dry weather, but we will continue to closely monitor the situation ... and take further action as needed."
The drought follows England's driest July in nearly 90 years, a month in which temperatures crossed 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) for the first time, bringing a renewed focus to the impacts of climate change.

Dead Fishes Oder River

Poland’s environment minister says laboratory tests following a mass dying off of fish detected high levels of salinity but no mercury in waters of Central Europe’s Oder River.
Laboratory tests following a mass die-off of fish in the Oder River detected high levels of salinity but no mercury poisoning its waters, Poland's environment minister said Saturday as the mystery continued as to what killed tons of fish in Central Europe.

Anna Moskwa, the minister of climate and environment, said analyses of river samples taken in both Poland and Germany revealed elevated salt levels. Comprehensive toxicology studies are still underway in Poland, she said.

She said Poland's state veterinary authority tested seven species of the dead fish and ruled out mercury as the cause of the die-off but was still waiting for results of other substances. She said test results from Germany had also not shown a high presence of mercury.

The Oder River runs from Czechia to the border between Poland and Germany before flowing into the Baltic Sea. Some German media had suggested that the river have been be poisoned with mercury.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said Friday that "huge amounts of chemical waste" were probably dumped intentionally into his country's second-longest river, causing environmental damage so severe it would take years for the waterway to recover.

On Saturday, Morawiecki vowed to do everything possible to limit the environmental devastation. Poland's interior minister said a reward of 1 million zlotys ($220,000) would be paid to anyone who helps track down those responsible for polluting the river.
