The Netherlands: Coldest May 29th on record

Image

Thursday was the coldest May 29th on record, with temperatures at the country's meteorological headquarters in De Bilt, Utrecht never surpassing 12.0 degrees Celsius. The mercury did not rise higher than 12.3 degrees in 1983, the previous record for lowest high temperature, according to the Telegraaf newspaper.

Netherlanders and tourists were wise to spend Ascension Day in the far south of the country, where the sun managed to pierce through cloud cover, pushing temperatures up to 19 degrees.

Residents of Veluwe, Gelderland dealt with a frigid peak of 11.5 degrees, while other parts of the country saw daytime temperatures range between 10 and 11 degrees, reports WeerOnline.nl.

Comment: Compare this to: Record breaking temperatures as the Netherlands basks in the sun:
The temperature reached 19 Celsius at the De Bilt weather station near Hilversum on Sunday afternoon - the highest March 9 temperature ever recorded. Saturday was also a record-breaking day.
Also consider the following: April 2014 was the fifth month in a row with a place in the top 10 of warmest months since records began in the Netherlands. Such a series of mild months is very rare. Compare this to last year, when the Netherlands experienced the coldest Spring in 40 years.

This time-lapse masterpiece from Kansas might be the best video of a thunderstorm you'll ever see

Supercells are the rarest and most severe type of thunderstorm. They're often the most mesmerizing, too, looming overhead with an ethereal, UFO-like grace that belies their knack for wreaking havoc. We've featured some impressive supercell videos on MNN before, but the cinematic opus above overshadows them all. Filmed by photographer Stephen Locke near Climax, Kansas, it's a nearly flawless portrait of a supercell's birth. Locke found an ideal vantage point to frame the May 10 mesocyclone, then used time-lapse photography to capture a fluid, vivid and high-definition video of his subject churning into existence. Do it justice by watching in HD and full-screen modes.

A series of moderate earthquakes and aftershocks hit the Philippines early Sunday, with US geologists estimating the shallowest - a magnitude-5.1 tremor - at just one kilometre deep, but there were no initial reports of damage. The first quake struck off the southern island of Mindanao at around 3:00 am local time (1900 GMT), some 30 kilometres (17 miles) east-northeast of the city of Cortes, according to the USGS.

It was followed by at least six moderate aftershocks, the strongest a magnitude-5.3 that was four kilometres deep, the USGS said. There were no immediate reports of damage and no tsunami warning was issued.

The End Holocene?

The Antithesis

You know, in science, there was once this thing we called the Theory of Multiple Working Hypotheses. Anathema (a formal ecclesiastical curse accompanied by excommunication) in modern climate science. So, in juxtaposition to the hypothesis of future global climate disruption from CO2, a scientist might well consider an antithesis or two in order to maintain ones objectivity.

One such antithesis, which happens to be a long running debate in paleoclimate science, concerns the end Holocene. Or just how long the present interglacial will last.

Looking at orbital mechanics and model results, Loutre and Berger (2003) in a landmark paper (meaning a widely quoted and discussed paper) for the time predicted that the current interglacial, the Holocene, might very well last another 50,000 years, particularly if CO2 were factored in. This would make the Holocene the longest lived interglacial since the onset of the Northern Hemisphere Glaciations some 2.8 million years ago. Five of the last 6 interglacials have each lasted about half of a precession cycle. The precession cycle varies from 19-23k years, and we are at the 23kyr part of the range now, making 11,500 years half, which is also the present age of the Holocene.

Which is why this discussion has relevance.

But what about that 6th interglacial, the one that wasn't on the half-precessional "clock". That would be MIS-11 (or the Holsteinian) which according to the most recently published estimate may have lasted on the order of 20-22kyrs, with the longest estimate ranging up to 32kyrs.

Loutre and Berger's 2003 paper was soon followed by another landmark paper by Lisieki and Raymo (Oceanography, 2005), an exhaustive look at 57 globally distributed deep Ocean Drilling Project (and other) cores (Figure 1), which stated:
"Recent research has focused on MIS 11 as a possible analog for the present interglacial [e.g., Loutre and Berger, 2003; EPICA community members, 2004] because both occur during times of low eccentricity. The LR04 age model establishes that MIS 11 spans two precession cycles, with 18O values below 3.6o/oo for 20 kyr, from 398-418 ka. In comparison, stages 9 and 5 remained below 3.6o/oo for 13 and 12 kyr, respectively, and the Holocene interglacial has lasted 11 kyr so far. In the LR04 age model, the average LSR of 29 sites is the same from 398-418 ka as from 250-650 ka; consequently, stage 11 is unlikely to be artificially stretched. However, the June 21 insolation minimum at 65N during MIS 11 is only 489 W/m2, much less pronounced than the present minimum of 474 W/m2. In addition, current insolation values are not predicted to return to the high values of late MIS 11 for another 65 kyr. We propose that this effectively precludes a 'double precession-cycle' interglacial [e.g., Raymo, 1997] in the Holocene without human influence."

Dust storm kills 12, cuts power in Delhi, India

A massive dust storm and thunder squall stopped the city in its tracks on Friday evening, bringing relief from the severe heat but leaving a trail of death, destruction and chaos. Nine people were killed in Delhi and three in Ghaziabad as trees fell on cars and strong winds toppled brick piles. A crashing luggage pile at the airport killed a loader.

More than 350 trees were uprooted, leading to traffic jams. Power supply was snapped for up to five hours in several parts of the city and metro services were disrupted just ahead of evening rush hour. the erratic power supply is further expected to trigger water shortage in the city on Saturday.

Until 4pm, Delhi was preparing for a heat wave, with the weather giving away nothing but a hot, dry summer day. The Met office had reported the presence of a light haze over Delhi during the first half of the day because of which many thought that cloud formation would not be possible. By 4.15 pm, the skies darkened and 15 minutes later, a storm was raging, catching commuters unawares.

Mount Sangeang Api eruption causes flight delays out of Darwin, Australia

Image
AEROMEDICAL service CareFlight has scaled its flights from Darwin airport until the volcano dust settles.CareFlight Director Ian Badham said it's being monitored on a minute by minute basis."To mitigate risk, we're responding to really urgent cases," Mr Badham said. "All but urgent emergency flights have been temporarily suspended. We're monitoring it like all other aviation operators. We're looking to life restrictions as soon as it's safe to do so." Careflight has six planes and a helicopter based at its Darwn hanger.

Duty Superintendent Geoff Barnhert said the police plane was still flying because the ash affected only high-level aviation.
The Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre said most of the Territory is covered by an ash cloud, but it is unlikely to reach Australia's east coast. Flights in and out of Darwin have been cancelled after volcanic ash from Mount Sangeang Api moved across to Australia.

The volcano, which erupted on Friday, is 1373km northwest of Darwin on the Indonesian island of Sumbawa. It is roughly halfway between Bali and Timor.

An elusive snake turned a Wilkes County woman's trip to Winston-Salem into an expensive adventure and resulted in a fruitless two-day search for the reptile.

The incident began shortly after noon Wednesday when Joan Bumgarner was driving along U.S. 421 South in eastern Yadkin County, she said. Bumgarner was taking her sister to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for an appointment.

Bumgarner said she felt something brush against her leg as she drove her white Lexus RX 350 on the highway into western Forsyth County.

"I looked down and didn't see anything," Bumgarner said. "About 10 minutes later, I saw the (snake's) head coming from behind the rearview mirror. It must have crawled up from the seat."

An emergency situation regime has been issued in the Republic of Altai on Friday over floods caused by excessive precipitation in the past four days, the republic's branch of the Emergencies Ministry told Itar-Tass. Nearly 4,000 residential houses are partially flooded in Siberia, with over 7,600 people evacuated from dangerous areas, said the head of the National Crisis Situation Management Center under Russia's Emergencies Ministry, Oleg Voronov.

Rescue teams of the Russian Emergencies Ministry (EMERCOM) and local authorities have organised evacuation of the population from flooded houses with 119 people taken to temporary shelters and 406 housed at their relatives'.

"The floods have destroyed 12 bridges - seven for vehicles and five for pedestrians, thus transport communication with eleven villages has been disrupted," the EMERCOM said.

Another deep sea species washes up: Dead Sperm whale found on Moreton Island beach, Queensland

Image

A rotting sperm whale carcass on Queensland's Moreton Island is attracting large sharks and creating a stink for visitors.

The 11-metre whale washed up on Friday on the island's eastern side, having been dead for about 24 hours.

The cause of death is unknown, however, Moreton Bay is known to be heavily populated with bull sharks and bites can be seen on the mammal.

A ranger said the carcass was too large to move with a tractor and it was hoped it would be washed out to sea on the rising tide. Otherwise, the whale would be left to decompose on the beach.

Tourist Ben Dillaway said the rotting carcass smelled "putrid", adding he wasn't game to step foot in the water after spotting a "huge shark" just off the beach.
