Typhoon Phanfone: Unprecedented high winds - one U.S. airman washed away to sea

Image
Tokyo is bracing for potentially unprecedented high winds as Typhoon Phanfone makes a beeline for the world's largest metropolitan area.

The typhoon's effects have already proven deadly. One U.S. airman has been found dead and two others are missing after waves caused by Typhoon Phanfone swept them away in Okinawa, according to a U.S. military official.

The eye of Phanfone is now just south of Japan's Pacific coast and moving east-northeast on a track that is likely to take it directly over Tokyo between 9 a.m. and noon Monday local time (8 and 11 p.m. EDT Sunday in the U.S.).

The Japan Meteorological Agency predicts sustained winds of 80 mph with gusts to 115 mph at that time. If such winds are measured in Tokyo, they would be the strongest ever recorded there.

According to JMA records, Tokyo's strongest sustained wind on record is 69.3 mph, recorded in a typhoon on Sept. 1, 1938. The city's strongest wind gust on record was 104.5 mph, recorded the same day.

An archived 1938 newspaper article from the Canberra Times says approximately 100 people died in the 1938 Tokyo typhoon.

Former Super Typhoon

At one point on Saturday, the U.S. military's Joint Typhoon Warning Center analyzed 150 mph winds within Phanfone, designating it super typhoon. The JTWC has since reduced its estimate of those winds slightly.

3.6 magnitude earthquake shakes Nevada

A minor earthquake shook the ground just south of Sloan and was felt in parts of the valley early Sunday morning.

The 3.6 magnitude earthquake happened at 3:11 a.m. about 22 miles south of Las Vegas, according to the Las Vegas Fire Department.

Although the quake was felt by many in the valley, according to fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski, there were no calls to the fire alarm office, which fields fire and medical emergency reports from Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and unincorporated Clark County.

The only event possibly related to the earthquake was a water main break in the 7700 block of South Jones Boulevard, near Robindale Road. No one was at the construction site at the time of the break, but a passerby noticed water coming from the lot. There was no damage and the water district was notified.

Nevada is the third most seismic state in the country, Szymanski said, and with earthquakes also occurring in California, residents should be prepared for an earthquake to occur at any time and without notice.

Some important steps to being prepared include: having a flashlight next to your bed - all three of the last earthquakes in Las Vegas happened at night - and having a disaster kit with three days of supplies including food and water.

Cold temperatures set record as snow arrives in Chicago

Saturday's snowflakes mark the third earliest snow sighting since the city began recording

Looks like Mother Nature isn't going to let Chicago forget that winter is coming.

The city saw light snow Saturday morning, marking one of the earliest snow sightings on record.

The earliest snow spotting in Chicago is Sept. 25, which occurred in 1928 and again in 1944, according to the National Weather Service.

Saturday's snowflakes mark the third earliest snow sighting since the city began recording.

The Rockford area also spotted snow Saturday morning, marking their second earliest sighting. The record was set in 1951 when the area saw snow on Oct. 3.

But the snow wasn't the only weather element the Chicago area made the record books with this weekend.

The city set a temperature record with O'Hare Airport recording a high of 47 degrees, marking the lowest maximum high temperature in 79 years, the NWS reported. The previous record, set on October 4, 1935, was 48 degrees.

The average high temperature in Chicago for the month of October is 62 degrees. The average low temperature is about 43 degrees.

Three workers of a hydropower plant in central Vietnam were struck dead by lightning while they were taking shelter at their workplace from a thunderstorm on Friday evening.

Two others were also badly injured, according to a Vietnamese article published Saturday on the website of Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.

Nguyen Van Trong, 32, Nguyen Van Anh, 28, and Le Van Hai, 21, were killed immediately after lightning hit them.

They were workers at Thuong Song Ong Hydropower Plant in Ninh Thuan Province's Ninh Son District.

Two other workers - Le Van Phi, 27, and Nguyen Van Viet, 28 - survived the strike and are being treated at the district's general hospital for their injuries.

Viet recalled that at the moment of the lightning strike, his group of 12 workers was clearing the site to prepare for concrete to be poured.

When it began to rain torrentially, the man and his colleagues stopped their work and took shelter in a shed nearby.

Mayon volcano's sustained reduction in sulfur dioxide emission, continuous surface inflation may lead to violent eruption

Image
Mayon volcano
A sustained reduction in sulfur dioxide emission and continuous surface inflation of Mayon Volcano may lead to a violent eruption, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned yesterday. Phivolcs-Bicol chief volcanologist Ed Laguerta issued the warning after Mayon's gas emission dropped to 308 tons last Thursday, way below the normal 500 tons per day in the past 48-hour monitoring period.

He said the reduction in sulfur dioxide emission could mean that the lava dome protruding at the summit of the volcano is gradually blocking the crater. "If Mayon's crater is clogged by lava dome, a violent eruption is very likely to happen," Laguerta told The STAR.

He said they are closely monitoring Mayon's gas emission to determine if the drop would be a prelude to a small or big eruption. But Laguerta noted that even a phreatic or ash explosion may be followed by bigger eruption once the deep-seated magma deposit is depressurized.

He added that the absence of volcanic quakes in the past three days is not an indication that Mayon has calmed down.

Detroit: Naked man loses hands, feet in dog pack attack

Detroit police say a man was critically injured when he was attacked by a pack of dogs on the city's east side.

According to Sgt. Michael Woody, the man was attacked late Thursday after the animals had escaped from a house on Pennsylvania Street, between East Warren and Mack avenues.

Woody told WWJ Newsradio 950's Sandra McNeil that when police were called out to the scene, a dozen dogs were loose.

"When we found the victim he was lying in a yard, completely naked, being attacked by several pit bulls," said Woody, "and our officers had to try to corral the pit bulls."

Woody said police fired several shots at the dogs, killing one of them.

The officers were then able to lure the remains 11 dogs inside the home and lock them inside. Those dogs are now in custody.

The unnamed 40- to 50-year-old victim lost both his hands and his feet in the attack. Friday afternoon, he remained in critical condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

At this time it's unclear what led to the attack. Woody said police don't know what the man was doing on the property or why he was unclothed.
