An earthquake swarm started under Bardarbunga volcano, Iceland during the early morning hours of Wednesday, March 1, 2017. The swarm started at 08:57 with M4.1 (the strongest) and ended at 10:24 UTC. There were no additional earthquakes registered over the next 24 hours.

Bryndís Ýr Gísladóttir, a specialist in natural hazards with the Icelandic Met Office told media that five powerful earthquakes were detected in the caldera of Bardarbunga volcano on March 1, 2017.

The sequence started with M4.1 at 08:57 UTC at a very shallow depth of 0.1 km (0.06 miles) and continued with M2.3 at a depth of 2.3 km (1.5 miles) within the first minute. In total, there were 5 earthquakes with magnitude above 3.0.

Bryndís insists that there are currently no signs of magma unrest in the area and that earthquakes have been common since the volcanic eruption in Bárðabunga ended in 2015. A similar incident happened in January 2017.

Off-duty pilot Santiago Borja Lopez captured the terrifying moment a bolt of lightning struck through the night sky over the Amazon rainforest.

The powerful shot shows a flash of white illuminating the inky-dark sky, with a sea of clouds ballooning around it.

Based in Quito, Ecuador, his work for a major South American airline often involves flying over regions that experience amazing natural phenomenon.

Mr Borja said he had 'never seen lightning like it' before and incredibly he had his camera out at just the right time.

The pilot was flying on a commercial Boeing 767-300ER en route to Europe when the lightning suddenly struck.

More than 700 of the 4,000 native bee species in North America and Hawaii are believed to be inching toward extinction due to increased pesticide use leading to habitat loss, a scientific study showed on Wednesday.

The Center for Biological Diversity's report concluded that of the 1,437 native bee species for which there was sufficient data to evaluate, about 749 of them were declining. Some 347 of the species, which play a vital role in plant pollination, are imperiled and at risk of extinction, the study found.

"It's a quiet but staggering crisis unfolding right under our noses that illuminates the unacceptably high cost of our careless addiction to pesticides and monoculture farming," its author, Kelsey Kopec, said in a statement.

Habitat loss, along with heavy pesticide use, climate change and increasing urbanization are the main causes for declining bee populations, the study found.

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 has hit a town in south-eastern Turkey, causing a number of injuries, officials and news reports said.

The earthquake was centred in the town of Samat in Adiyaman province, the government-run Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency said.

It was followed by four more tremors, the strongest measuring 4.4.

At least five people were injured in the quake, which knocked down some buildings in the town, mayor Yusuf Firat told private NTV television.

There was no immediate report of any fatalities.

A Boyle County farmer says a single lightning strike killed thousands of dollars worth of livestock this afternoon.

For Matt Nolan, Tuesday morning's round of storms proved devastating for his livestock, though it took him several hours to learn how.

"I fed them at eleven o'clock, put the bale out, and i went to the house because it started storming again," he said.

Nolan said that storm brought heavy rain and intense lightning. One strike sounded like it hit just outside his home.

Hours later he learned it did and the proof was what he found around this bale feeder.

"They have hay still in their mouths, so it knocked them out quick," Nolan said.

Nolan believes that lightning strike hit the bale ring and each cow feeding from it.

Why are "giant fountains of lava" suddenly pouring out of some of the most dangerous volcanoes on the entire planet, and why are so many long dormant volcanoes suddenly roaring back to life? The spectacular eruption of Mt. Etna in Italy is making headlines all over the world, but it is far from alone. According to Volcano Discovery, 35 major volcanoes either are erupting right now or have just recently erupted, and dozens of others are stirring. So what is causing this upsurge in volcanic activity? Is something strange happening inside the Earth?

According to the USGS, magma is "molten rock underground", and lava is molten rock "that breaks through the Earth's surface". Right now, something is pushing magma up through the crust of the Earth at a number of key spots around the planet. On the island of Sicily, the "giant fountains of lava" that are coming out of Mt. Etna can be seen 30 kilometers away...
Giant fountains of lava could be seen sprouting from the volcano, located on the isle of Sicily, as far away as Catania, around 30 kilometres away, and the resort town of Taormina.

The Meteorological Observatory in Nunziata said: "You can clearly see the lava fountains, although currently modest, as it escapes from the crater in the southeast."

An orange air alert has been issued, meaning that airspace will remain open but authorities will continue to monitor the situation.
On the other side of the world, a constant stream of molten rock has been springing out of Guatemala's "Volcano of Fire" since February 25th...
Guatemala's Volcano of Fire erupted Saturday (Feb 25), spewing lava and sending up plumes of ash that rained down on nearby communities and could eventually reach the capital, civil protection authorities said.

The Volcan de Fuego, one of the country's three active volcanoes, is located about 45km southwest of the capital Guatemala City. It was the volcano's second eruption this year.
And in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a "firehose of lava" has been pouring out of the Kilauea Volcano since December 31st.

Despite President Donald Trump's campaign rhetoric about climate change (a.k.a. man made global warming), calling it a "hoax," and the obvious sign the President has sent by nominating Oklahoma attorney general Scott Pruitt to take over the EPA, the leadership and scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have decided to ignore the President's signals and in effect thumb their nose at him with their latest sea level rise prediction.

The report put out this January 2017(NOAA Technical report NOC CO-OPS 083),was issued under the signature of the departing Department of Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker and NOAA Administrator Dr. Kathryn Sullivan. The report title is "GLOBAL AND REGIONAL SEA LEVEL RISE SCENARIOS FOR THE UNITED STATES."

The 75 page report has as a primary purpose, to continue the climate scare tactics of the Obama administration with a new prediction of worsening global sea level rise of up to 2.5 meters(8 feet 2in.) by the year 2100, an increase from their previous estimate of 2.0 meters(6 feet 7 in).

Comment: Consider the report card on Gore, Mann, and Obama. Man made CO2 global warming is a political/corporate fiction and has nothing to do with real science. In fact, the recent pronounced reduction in solar activity very likely indicates the onset of the next Little Ice Age that we have already entered. Over 4,200 birds dead in Idaho after massive outbreak of avian cholera

Wildlife officials estimate that more than 4,200 birds have died from an avian cholera outbreak that started in early February.

The outbreak has occurred on private land, and the disease has killed mostly duck, but also some geese and other birds.

Currently, Idaho Fish and Game personnel are continuing to find and collect dead waterfowl in the Parma area in western Idaho. The dead birds are being collected by Fish and Game crews and volunteers and buried at the Fort Boise Wildlife Area to prevent and reduce further spread of the disease.

"We're trying to minimize the impact," said Tyler Archibald, Fish and Game habitat biologist at Fort Boise Wildlife Management Area.
