We might be reluctantly breaking out our rainboots and long pants here in the Lower Mainland, but elsewhere in B.C. they're already seeing snow.

On Tuesday, the coldest spot in the province according to Environment Canada is the Fort Nelson Airport, where temps today in the northeast corner of B.C. are in the 0C to -1C range, with light snow. Muncho Lake and Sikanni Chief also have light snow in Tuesday's weather forecast.

Mid-Atlantic states prep for storm surge as Hurricane Florence barrels toward Carolinas - UPDATE

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster sounds the alarm as Hurricane Florence churns toward the coast.

Up and down the Carolinas, residents are rushing to ready emergency kits, map out escape routes and secure their homes in preparation for the onslaught of rain and wind the rapidly intensifying Hurricane Florence is expected to bring later this week.

The National Hurricane Center said the Category 2 storm continues to gain strength over the Atlantic, about 625 miles southeast of Bermuda - with top winds reaching 85 mph.

Drawing energy from the warm water, Florence could be a fearsome Category 4 with winds of 130 mph or more by Tuesday, and is expected to remain an extremely dangerous major hurricane through Thursday.

UPDATE: Coastal areas in the Carolinas have begun evacuations:
South Carolina has ordered the mandatory evacuation of its entire coast, and evacuations were also ordered for several North Carolina towns, as Category 4 Hurricane Florence continues her aggressive pursuit towards the states.

The governor of South Carolina, Henry McMaster, ordered the mandatory evacuation of the state's entire 187-mile coastline at noon on Tuesday.

"This is a real hurricane we have coming," he said. "We don't want to risk one South Carolina life."

The evacuation order extends to eight counties along the state's coast, with McMaster estimating that around one million people - residents and visitors - will be affected by the order.

North Carolina's governor declared a state of emergency on Sunday, one day after South Carolina. So far, mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for residents and visitors in some coastal areas of the state, while other counties only issued them for those in low lying and "flood prone" areas.

The governors of Maryland and Virginia have also declared a state of emergency.

Hurricane Florence was upgraded to a Category 4 earlier on Monday, with President Donald Trump taking to Twitter to encourage those in its path to "take all necessary precautions."

Central North Carolina's coastal counties are bracing for Florence to hit the area on Thursday, bringing potential floods and a threat of tornados, according to Dare County officials.

The hurricane is expected to "bring life-threatening storm surge, tropical storm force winds, heavy rains and the potential for tornadoes" to Dare and other coastal counties, said the National Weather Service, which has predicted that nine to 12.5 inches of rain will fall in some coastal counties between Thursday and Monday.

State of emergency declared, evacuations ordered as Hurricane Florence bears down on US east coast

North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia have declared a state of emergency ahead of Hurricane Florence's arrival. Governor Ralph Northam issued a mandatory evacuation order for 245,000 Virginians in low-lying, coastal areas.

"Hurricane Florence has the potential to cause catastrophic flooding, especially in our coastal areas," Governor Northam said in a statement. "This evacuation is for the safety of thousands of Virginians living in that zone. But the effects of this storm will be felt statewide, and I encourage everyone in Virginia to prepare now."

The Virginia governor added that the entire state will be affected but further evacuations are not necessary at this time. He also stated that the hurricane's path is liable to change and that Virginians should prepare for "coastal storm surge, inland flooding that may be severe, high winds, and widespread power outages."

Florence has grown to a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 130mph as it descends upon the southeastern seaboard of the US.

Giant sinkholes forming in backyard of new Hagerstown, Maryland neighborhood

Some homeowners in Hagerstown are finding themselves in deep trouble thanks to the recent appearance of some rather large sinkholes.

Seth Linde says he and his wife discovered a massive sinkhole in his backyard on Saturday. His home is in the Rosewood Village community and his home was built in the Fall of 2016.

Linde says his wife nearly fell into the growing sinkhole.

They called the non-emergency dispatch number and responding emergency officials were concerned by the size of the hole.

"Everybody's afraid to even put any tools down there. I estimated it to be about 15 feet deep," said Linde.

Animals more used to desert heat have been photographed enjoying the snow after a cold front brought snowfall to parts of South Africa over the weekend.

Giraffes, antelope, rhinoceroses and elephants were photographed in icy conditions around South Africa, in pictures shared widely on social media.

Kitty Viljoen captured elephants enjoying the snow in the Sneeuberg - which translates to Snow Mountain - on the Western Cape of South Africa, where snow set in late last week. She also photographed giraffes in snow in the Karoo semi-desert region.

Summer snowstorm expected to hit western Alberta, Canada

Canada snow
© CBCAbout 10 centimtres of snow is expected in some parts of western Alberta on Wednesday.
It may still be summer, but communities in western Alberta are being told to hunker down for a blast of wintry weather.

A snowstorm is expected to whip into the province later this week. On Monday, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for areas including Jasper, Grande Prairie, Nordegg and Rocky Mountain House.

A cold north wind is to blame for the incoming blizzard.

"A cool air mass will invade much of Alberta this week, bringing with it weather that is decidedly more like winter than summer," the advisory reads.

Globally it looks like wheat stocks and production are on the downslide as was predicted as we moved further into the Grand Solar Minimum. EU at least 12% loss, US same, Australia and Russia down, but at the same time Soy and Corn up. The corporate media will focus on these two so as not to spook anyone and explain away the price rises as tariff spats and swineflu.
