Life for Palestinians: A forced existence

In memory of Jeanne & Joseph Sullivan

It is popular in Israel, the US and western world to claim that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. It is important to discuss to what extent this is true and how this assertion is disconnected from the reality of life in Israel.

Israel is a de facto two-nation state which, for a long time, has included the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Half the state's citizens are Jewish and half are Palestinian; there are around 6.3 million of each. The Jewish half is privileged and enjoys social and civil rights, whereas most of the Palestinian half is under occupation and has few or no rights at all. This is not the way a democracy should behave. This is important because the status quo is supported by US taxes and foreign policies.

Most US citizens are not alone in failing to recognize this; most Jewish Israelis are also blind to it. There is a reason for this blindness: simply put, life for most of them is quite good; they don't want to share their power with the Palestinians; they do not respect Palestinians. What do they respect and cherish? Mr. Netanyahu has told us: "life itself". In a nutshell, this is the hardcore ethics of the Israeli-Jewish collective. I will come back to it.

Treacherous scum: U.S.-backed 'rebels' massacre 100+ hostages before leaving Aleppo (Update)

aleppo
The jihadist rebels of Fatah Halab and Jabhat Fateh Al-Sham carried out another heinous massacre prior to leaving the last east Aleppo neighborhoods this past week, an SAA officer from the Republican Guard told Al-Masdar News on Friday.

Over 100 hostages from the Syrian Arab Army, mostly young men between the ages of 18-25, were summarily executed by the jihadist rebels prior to their departure from the Sukkari and Bustan Al-Qasr districts of east Aleppo.

"These massacred soldiers were comprised of men that were captured by the jihadist rebels over a four year span in the Aleppo Governorate; they were unable to smuggle their hostages from the Sukkari School, so they chose to execute them instead," the SAA officer added.

Comment: An eye-opening report from liberated Aleppo about the massacre (warning: disturbing images):

Ziad Fadel reports:
Over 100 Syrian soldiers who had been taken hostage during the last 4 years were summarily executed by the 2 murdering terrorist groups: Nusra/Alqaeda and Fath Halab. This was confirmed by a Republican Guard officer to Al-Masdar News. The men were between the ages of 18-25 years. When the Syrian Army high command was negotiating with the terrorists over how they would be evacuated, the army insisted as a condition that the soldiers be released. The terrorists averred that they had no such hostages and, when they saw they could not smuggle the hostages out, decided to put them to death instead.

Update (Dec. 25): The groups behind the massacre have been identified as U.S.-backed Harakat Nouriddeen Al-Zink and Ahrar Al-Sham. One of the victims was videotaped just days before he was executed, being heckled and humiliated by the "rebels".

The MacLaren nightmare: Daughter wrongfully taken from mother and placed in custody of alleged sex abuser

Christi MacLaren
© US ObserverChristi MacLaren
What would you think about a four-year-old child who, when you wanted to take them to a relative's home, became so agitated in not wanting to go, and so visibly scared that they wet themselves? Would you think there was a real problem; perhaps a dangerous problem? Or, would your first inclination be that the child must have been coached? Unfortunately, for one child and her mother that is exactly the position Department of Human Services (DHS) employee Cori McGovern has taken by asserting the mother introduced the ideas into her own child. By taking this position, DHS has taken the child from her mother and placed her with the girl's father, the exact person the girl so vehemently acted out against being around. It begs the question, how is it that some abused children get lost in the system that is supposed to protect them and wind up being more damaged? One thing is certain, that is exactly what has happened in this nightmare of a case.

According to records, In the Spring of 2015, Christi MacLaren was initially told by her daughter (then four-years-old) that Sean Lenzo (biological father) had rubbed, "magic cream" on her vagina in a really fast motion until bleeding occurred. Next, the young girl claimed Lenzo took a picture of her vagina while it was bleeding, eventually showing her the photo as he laughed. In shock, Christi immediately contacted several professionals that very day. Her main concern was her daughter's safety and seeking help. Unfortunately, there was no help for Christi and her daughter, only horrific damage according to multiple witnesses.

Comment: The Department of Human Services sure has a questionable agenda:

Leah Remini challenges Church of Scientology: If I lied about anything, sue me!

leah remini
In an interview on Larry King Now Thursday, reformed Scientologist Leah Remini challenged the church's criticism of her reality show Scientology and the Aftermath, arguing if they want to call her and her fellow defectors liars, "they should sue."

Asked about the Church of Scientology's statement that Remini is a "bitter ex-Scientologst" and "spoiled entitled diva" lying about the church for attention and recognition, Remini told King she has nothing to say about its position.

"I don't," Remini said. "I think that says a lot about this organization. They should sue us, it's as simple as that. If we're lying—"

"And listen, they say this on every outlet that can," she continued. "They have said this about every single person that's spoke out, and not one lawsuit has been brought to anybody."

Remini noted Scientologists are "not a group that is scared of a lawsuit."

Fake anti-Muslim hate crime: Threat to 'burn' Muslim University of Michigan student debunked

Muslim headscarf
Another anti-Muslim hate crime has been debunked, this one in Ann Arbor, Michigan, after a Muslim student's claim that she was threatened for wearing her Muslim headscarf was discovered to be a hoax.

Police now say a false report was filed by a Muslim University of Michigan student, who told police several weeks ago that a man threatened to light her on fire if she did not remove her hijab as she walked down the street in Ann Arbor. The unidentified student claimed her assailant was a white man, whom she insisted sounded like he was drunk, Fox 2 reported.

Cops taser 91yo Alzheimer's patient for not going to the doctor (Video)

"...the State is a soulless machine, it can never be weaned from violence to which it owes its very existence." — Mahatma Gandhi

A hard to watch video of police tasering a 91-year-old man has just been released showing the nature of Gandhi's quote above. For refusing to go to a doctor visit, an elderly Alzheimer's patient was tasered and handcuffed — because police were worried about his well-being.

The incident happened in March, however, the body camera footage was not released until Thursday. In the video, we see an undersheriff with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office deploy his taser on a 91-year-old man with Alzheimer's at a Minneapolis nursing home because the man wouldn't get in a car to go to the doctor.

To get this man to a doctor for his health, police assaulted him, placed him in handcuffs, and he had to be carried out on a stretcher. This is why cops are not doctors.

Former New York gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino is facing backlash on social media for a racist remark about first lady Michelle Obama published Thursday in a Buffalo alt-weekly publication.

Paladino, who was honorary co-chair of President-elect Donald Trump's New York campaign, was one of a few dozen prominent Buffalo figures surveyed by Artvoice for an end-of-the-year feature on their hopes for 2017.

In response to a question about who should "go away," Paladino suggested the first lady should "return to being a male" and move to an African cave.

"I'd like (Michelle Obama) to return to being a male and let loose in the outback of Zimbabwe where she lives comfortably in a cave with Maxie, the gorilla," Paladino responded, according to Artvoice.

A number of gruesome discoveries involving mutilated animals have prompted a southwestern Ontario humane society to warn pet owners about a possible serial animal killer on the loose.

Last week, police in London, Ont., responded to a report of a headless dog found on top of a recycling bin near a beer store. The animal had been skinned and was missing organs.

It was the latest in a series of similar disturbing incidents in which dead animals were found in public places around the city, according to the London Humane Society's executive director, Judy Foster.

Over the last year, Foster said, there have been at least eight incidents involving 17 dead animals, including a skinned and beheaded bunny found on the Western University campus, a mutilated cat found in a park, six dead coyotes — two of them headless and skinned — placed in a pose in three different locations, and seven dead snakes left in a strange pose.

A Florida man has been arrested for posting what are being interpreted as threats against President-elect Donald Trump on Facebook.

Kevin Keith Krohn, 59, was arrested December 22 for posts like "I'm just glad Obama didn't take all our gunz! I see a good use for one now," which he wrote above a picture of Trump that also read "He's not my president / He's an enemy of the state," according to the Orlando Sun-Sentinel.

He also captioned a photo of a man holding a sniper rifle with "The EXPEDITER of Trump! He will never last long!"

Local law enforcement reported the threats, made in a comment thread about Trump's plans to spend Christmas at his resort in Palm Beach, to the US Secret Service, the Sun-Sentinel reports.

'The Police Killings No One Is Talking About': Native Americans more likely to be killed by cops

"When it comes to American Indians, mainstream America suffers from willful blindness." —Lydia Millet, The New York Times, October 13, 2016
Marcus Lee, Lance McIntyre, Daniel Covarrubias, Raymond Eacret, Jessie Lee Rose, Jacqueline Salyers, Mah-hi-vist Goodblanket, Richard Estrada, Jeanetta Riley, Larry Kobuk, Jamie Lee Brave Heart, Loreal Tsingine, Corey Kanosh, Allen Locke, Sarah Lee Circle Bear.

Say their names because odds are you have not heard about them, or read about them. Say their names because all of them are Native Americans killed by police. However, if the relatively recently organized Native Lives Matter can build a movement that links up with other organizations combatting police killings and racial bias, the deaths of these Native Americans might become the roots of change.

Nearly seven months ago I wrote a piece for Buzzflash titled "Mainstream Media Are Egregiously Negligent in Reporting on Indigenous Peoples," which maintained that not only are stories about Native Americans rarely reported, when they are reported at all, they are all-too-frequently awash in stereotypes. Nowhere has this been more evident than the paucity of reporting about police killings of Native Americans.

According to an In These Times special investigative report by Stephanie Woodard, titled "The Police Killings No One Is Talking About," "When compared to their percentage of the U.S. population, Natives were more likely to be killed by police than any other group, including African Americans."

Despite evidence gathered by Mike Males, senior researcher at the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice, "killings of Native people go almost entirely unreported by mainstream U.S. media," Woodard pointed out. She noted that in an April meeting of the Western Social Science Association, Claremont Graduate University researchers Roger Chin, Jean Schroedel and Lily Rowen presented their study of reviewed articles about deaths-by-cop published between May 1, 2014, and October 31, 2015, in the top 10 U.S. newspapers by circulation: the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, New York Daily News, New York Post, Chicago Sun-Times, Denver Post, Washington Post and Chicago Tribune.
